Robbie Gallo, the frontman for Vokab Kompany, is coming home to South Lake Tahoe this week for two shows, the first at Live at Lakeview Thursday night. The 1998 graduate of South Tahoe High School is also the MC for the San Diego based hip hop band.
Three new Battalion Chiefs for South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/20/2016 - 11:31pmSouth Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue recently promoted three men to the position of Battalion Chief, a move that Fire Chief Jeff Meston says will improve safety for both citizens and personnel.
Jim Drennan, Tim Spencer and Karl Koeppen are all now Battalion Chiefs for the City of South Lake Tahoe. Between them, they have over 61 years of firefighting experience.
Goodwill Industries store opens doors in South Lake Tahoe

This year, former major league pitchers Mark Mulder and Derek Lowe joined the group at the Hard Rock Cafe for two hours of candid discussions, fun and community.
Over on hole 17 Wednesday, former Tahoe Douglas Rotary President Todd Poth won the Korbel Media Spray Off.

Montreal Fire sparks another spot fire; Small fire in Desolation Wilderness
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/20/2016 - 6:30pmAnother spot fire from Tuesday's Montreal Fire in South Lake Tahoe flared up overnight, burning about .16 acre before being controlled by firefighters. This spot was under the Heavenly Gondola tower 7.
This was the third spot fire started from the original fire which started behind the electrical substation on Montreal Road. All are out at this time.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation though the area where the first fire ignited is known to be used as a transient encampment.
Douglas County man returns home to be DCSO deputy
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/20/2016 - 4:02pmCole Sonneman, a Carson Valley native, was sworn in on July 18 as the newest deputy with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
Sonnemann was raised in the Carson Valley and spent several years in the DCSO Explorer Program as a teenager with Deputies Teresa Duffy and Chris Griffith. Sonneman said he remembers attending DARE lessons taught by Griffith while attending Gardnerville Elementary School.
LTCC offers reduced tuition to some Nevada residents
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/20/2016 - 3:49pmStarting in the upcoming Fall 2016 quarter, Lake Tahoe Community College will once again be offering reduced tuition to residents of certain nearby Nevada communities in the Tahoe Basin. Up to 100 Nevada residents living in specific communities who meet the parameters established in the new partnership between California and Nevada can tap into the new, lower cost, which is three times the California resident rate, or $93 per unit. This equates to a savings of $88 per unit from the $181 per-unit rate established for all other non-residents attending LTCC.
Community advocate named Tahoe Chamber Interim CEO

Chamber Board Chair Mike McLaughlin announced the Board’s appointment of Teshara in a statement released July 21.
“Our Board is extremely pleased Steve has agreed to step in to support the Chamber’s mission, membership, and community engagement while we seek a new CEO to move the organization into 2017 and beyond,” said McLaughlin. “Steve adds a unique blend of experiences and accomplishments to our dedicated Chamber staff.”

New regulations for South Lake Tahoe massage parlors and therapists
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/19/2016 - 10:28pmThere will soon be a new ordinance in the City of South Lake Tahoe that will regulate massages, massage establishments and massage therapists.
"We will be raising the level of standards to legitimize the industry," said Mayor Wendy David.
There are currently 125 licensed massage therapists in the City, and an unknown number of people who are not. The new ordinance will be in place to make all comply and be licensed therapists in 90 days, or they cannot conduct business.
Taxi cabs in South Lake Tahoe now on more level playing field with rideshares
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/19/2016 - 9:37pmFor months the operators of taxicabs in South Lake Tahoe have said the regulations they have to abide by when operating in the City limits were unfair since app-based rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft didn't have to follow the same controls.
After Tuesday's City Council meeting, the cabs and rideshares will now be on a more level playing field with less regulation.
The "cabbies" at the meeting all left happy with the 5-0 vote of the Council to reduce the number of regulations they once had to abide by, and with a new ordinance created through group meetings with both sides.

Women's long drive record established at Edgewood during celebrity golf action
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/19/2016 - 7:15pmA drive of 336-yards by the 2013 Women's World Long Drive Champion Heather LeMaster was good enough to establish a world record at elevation during the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe on Tuesday.
LeMaster, a Sacramento native, was one of four contestants to attempt the record.
Kayaker dies in water offshore of South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/19/2016 - 7:00pm1:30 p.m. 7/20/16 update: The man who died while kayaking in Lake Tahoe on Tuesday has been identified as 43-year-old Paul Anthony Aguirre of Rio Linda, Calif. Aguirre was in South Lake Tahoe with his family, his fiancée, and his fiancée's family.
Aguirre had been paddling in a privately owned kayak in the area of El Dorado Beach when family members lost sight of him and a call went out for help at 4:49 p.m.
The victim was located at the water’s surface, approximately 300 yards off of the shoreline of El Dorado Beach, where the depth was approximately 10 feet.
"Bandaged Bandit" sought by FBI for four bank robberies
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/19/2016 - 6:42pmThe man dubbed the "Bandaged Bandit" is being sought by the FBI in a string of armed bank robberies that started with the South Shore robbery of US Bank on June 29.
Three additional banks were robbed after the Stateline one.
Two banks in El Dorado Hills were robbed on July 1 and July 14, and another one in Folsom on July 15, all apparently by the same suspect who affixes bandages to his nose, chin and arms.

Three local men arrested in connection with theft of 1,100 Heavenly ski vouchers
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/19/2016 - 5:28pmAn investigation into the March 10 theft of $116,520 worth of Heavenly Valley ski pass vouchers has led to the arrest of three men on suspicion of conspiracy, felony embezzlement, theft and possession of stolen property.
On July 15 and 16, deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office took into custody Tim Jacobsen, 21, of Minden, Nev., Mark Graham, 20 of Gardnerville, Nev., and Angelo Bozin, 25 of South Lake Tahoe, Calif.
Bail has been set on each man at $10,000.00.
Quick response to two fires burning near Heavenly Gondola

Wrap up of fire activity is expected at 9:00 p.m. but personnel will remain on the scene to watch overnight.

South Tahoe High grad celebrates release of new music video

The 30-year-old South Lake Tahoe woman, a 2003 graduate of South Tahoe High, is celebrating the video's release and shared the news from her berth on a Carnival Cruise Line ship. She also talked about how she got started on her career in a town she's called home since 1989.

State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to just north of Granlibakken Road in Tahoe City that is upgrading storm water drainage and treatment systems, adding curb and gutter, resurfacing and realigning the road, adding new left-turn pockets and widening shoulders on an 8-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected by summer 2017.
New business on the way to town: South Lake Brewing Company

Plans have been submitted and the work will soon begin on the Smith's venture. South Lake Brewing Company. They have signed the lease for the long vacant Ace Hardware building on the corner of Tata Lane and Lake Tahoe Blvd.

In the spirit of community, the idea of honoring law enforcement in South Lake Tahoe on August 1 is growing. Jen Bloch, owner of Tahoe Tot Spot, heard what South Lake Tahoe restaurateur Ted Kennedy was doing to honor the men, and women, in blue, and wanted to join in.
Tahoe Tot Spot will be offering free admission for children of law enforcement officers and deputies that day.

Theft on the rise in South Lake Tahoe; SLTPD offers advice on protecting belongings

According to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD), the rise is a result of thieves being able to act quickly when they see unattended and unsecured property in vehicles, homes and public places. Since July 1, 2016, there have been 54 reported thefts in just the city limits, or 3.375 thefts per day. Of the 54 thefts reported, 61% (33) are a result of unsecured and/or unattended property.

Vessel is teaming up with the tournament for the third year to raise money for charity through an online auction of premium golf bags autographed by the 90 participants competing in the annual celebrity tournament at Lake Tahoe, which starts TUesday at Edgewood Tahoe.

What's your favorite ice cream flavor?

Celebrated on the third Sunday in July, the holiday was declared by President Ronald Reagan in 1984 as a way to promote the economic well-being of the U.S. dairy industry.
While most don't need a reason to enjoy ice cream, Reagan's move called for the people of the United States to use ceremonies and activities to pay tribute to ice cream.
Why argue with this proclamation? It sounds reasonable!
Memorial fund set up for fallen BLM firefighter Jake O'Malley
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/17/2016 - 1:59pmWhittell High graduate Jake O'Malley was one of the two wildland firefighters killed in a single vehicle accident on July 10.
As part of O'Malley's duties while based in Winnemucca, Nevada was to patrol for fires, and it was while doing this when his vehicle crashed, killing both Jake and his roommate, Will Hawkins of Reno. A third occupant was hospitalized and has since been released.
Firefighters quickly put out two fires on the South Shore
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/17/2016 - 1:34pmFirefighters responded to two small fires on Sunday, one at Round Hill and the other in the meadow behind the Ross store.
A person walking behind the US Forest Service building and Ross/Rite Aid building saw a fire and rushed into Ross to call 911. Firefighters responded quickly and the small fire was quickly extinguished. The fire was only able to burn a 5 ft x 5 ft square. The cause is under investigation.

Local restaurateur offers free meals to law enforcement personnel and families August 1

Kennedy, who on the ownership team of Base Camp Pizza, California Burger, Azul Latin Kitchen and now, the Lakeside Beach House, shows gratitude on a weekly basis. Those in uniform and teachers get a free meal at any of his four restaurants (police officers, sheriff's deputies, fire personnel, nurses and those on active duty).
"This is to thank them, and show that we appreciate their service," said Kennedy. "They are our local heroes."
Fallen firefighters from Zephyr Cove and Reno in procession from Carson City to Winnemucca
Submitted by paula on Sat, 07/16/2016 - 8:52pmA procession from Carson City to Reno and then to Winnemucca began Saturday morning for two fallen Bureau of Land Management firefighters who died Sunday in a vehicle crash.
Memorial services will be held for Bureau of Land Management wild land firefighters Jacob O’Malley and Will Hawkins, who lost their lives in a single-vehicle accident July 10 on Nevada State Route 140.
HIgh fire danger in Lake Tahoe basin Sunday and Monday
Submitted by paula on Sat, 07/16/2016 - 8:45pmHot and dry weather will continue in the region according to the National Weather Service, but with the warm temperatures and low humidity comes a "Fire Weather Warning."
NWS is forecasting gusty winds and high fire danger on Sunday and Monday and they are urging extreme caution, especially near dry grass and brush.
Gusty winds and waves up to 3 feet will produce hazardous conditions for boating, kayaking and paddle boarding. Calm lake conditions in the morning can quickly turn dangerous once the winds kick up, so remember to always wear your personal flotation device.
Body found in burned car in Washoe County, Sheriff's Office seeks public's help

The men have been identified as Shannon Miller, Shawn Miller and Corey Massengale, all from the Silver Spring area of Lyon County.

An event to raise money for the families of firefighters killed in the line of duty will be held at Red's Old 395 on Friday, July 29 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
The Wildland Firefighter Foundation is holding the event which includes a raffle, wild beard contest, Smoky Bear and other fun. The donations will come from $1 raffle ticket purchases and beard contest entries.

Man runs 65 miles to South Lake Tahoe to show support for law enforcement

It is early, but not too early to prevent a group of people to come see Camino resident Hervé Leconte leave on his 65-mile run to the EDSO building in South Lake Tahoe.
John Thomas Setnor December 31, 1945 - July 12, 2016
Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/15/2016 - 10:37pmOn July 12, 2016 at 2:56 p.m., with his family by his side, John Setnor passed peacefully into the Lord's Kingdom. He was born December 31st 1945 and was raised in Chicago, Illinois and spent 32 incredible years in South Lake Tahoe, Calif., with the love of his life, his Lynnie.
John's passion for fishing and extraordinary sense of humor were only surpassed by the love he showed for his family and friends. When he wasn't on his boat fishing, he loved spending time at home with his family sitting out by his pond enjoying the wildlife that he so loved.
Johanna "Jo Jo" Conroy July 24, 1950 - July 9, 2016
Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/15/2016 - 10:32pmAfter a 3 1/2 year battle with brain cancer, JoJo Conroy passed away peacefully in her garden on Saturday July 9th. She would have been 66 on July 24th. During her 43 years as a resident of South Lake Tahoe she touched many lives in a variety of capacities. She spent her summers as a banquet waitress at Edgewood Golf Course and her winters overseeing the operation of Rainbow Mountain Ski Shop. But it was her commitment to her community and friends where she truly shined.

Sheriff asking for public's help in finding woman missing in Pollock Pines
Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/15/2016 - 2:09pmThe El Dorado County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help in finding a deaf woman who went missing in the Pollock Pines area back on July 8.
Kimberly Gillespie, 42, was last seen possibly walking in a rural area east of Pollock Pines. She is a white female adult, 5’2″ tall and weighs approximately 140 pounds. Kimberly has brown hair, brown eyes and has disabilities that affect her memory and mobility.
She was last seen wearing a sleeveless shirt, blue jeans and tennis shoes.
