NHP interviews person of interest in illegal traffic stops
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/04/2016 - 4:22pmAs a followup to a story carried on South Tahoe Now Wednesday, a person of interest came forward today in the alleged illegal attempted traffic stop on southbound IR580 in the area of the Mt. Rose Highway.
Members of the Nevada Highway Patrol contacted and thoroughly interviewed the unidentified man who attempted to pull over a motorist with an unmarked pickup truck.

Christy was born March 10, 1949 in Altadena, California to Jack and Marjorie Cosbey. She spent her childhood in Southern California, graduating in 1967 from Long Beach Polytechnic High School. She studied Nursing at Long Beach State College and worked as a nurse in Cardiology and Family Practice.

Search continues for woman missing from Alpine County campground
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/04/2016 - 6:34amOn July 28, 71-year-old Rosalynn Saxsenmeier wandered away from her camping spot in the Silver Valley Campground at Lake Alpine at 2:00 p.m. and hasn't been seen since.
Many agencies are assisting in the search and combing a 100-mile area for the El Granada (Half Moon Bay area), Calif., woman. A "Silver Alert" has been issued via the California Highway Patrol as well. Search and rescue teams from El Dorado, Tuolumne, Marin, Contra Costa, Placer and Calaveras counties have been joined by K-9 crews, CA Office of Emergency Services and the Bay Area Mountain Rescue Unit.
Gunnar, newest Tahoe Douglas Explosive Ordinance Disposal team member

He is a member of the Tahoe Douglas Explosive Ordinance Disposal team and, once he completes his training, will join six other dogs as canine resources for the Northern Nevada Bomb Technicians Task Force.
The other EOD dogs are from UNR-Police Department, Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Reno Police Department, and three from Reno Airport TSA.

Injured pelican helped by CHP near Truckee

On Tuesday night, the CHP office in Truckee received reports of an injured pelican on I-80 westbound, west of Overland Trail. Upon arrival, CHP officers saw the troubled bird attempt to fly away, but instead landed directly next to the travel lanes of the freeway.

Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/03/2016 - 5:34pmTroopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol responded to a call on Wednesday morning made by a motorist concerned with an unmarked pickup attempting to pull them over at 10:30 a.m.
In the area of the Mt. Rose Highway on IR580, the caller said the vehicle attempting to stop them was a silver or gray colored Ford F-150 extended cab pickup with Nevada plate 89A639. This Ford pickup had no markings on it that would identify it as a law enforcement vehicle. However, it was equipped with red and blue flashing lights.

Ski Run Blvd and Pioneer Trail will be transformed into a large water party pn August 27 when a 1000-ft water slide lets participants slipe and slide their way down the streets in South Lake Tahoe.
The Tahoe Regional Young Professional group is bringing "Slide the City" to town not only as a fundraiser, but as a fun and local event that will also feature live music, vendors and food through three-city blocks. 11 arrested during "Operation Safer Streets"

Nevada Department of Public Safety- Division of Parole and Probation in collaboration with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office made the contacts on July 29 and July 30, resulting in 11 arrests.
Nevada raffling off iconic welcome signs

The Nevada Department of Transportation is replacing the old, obsolete signs, depicting a lone miner that once greeted travelers to the state. They held a recent contest for Nevada high school students for the design of a new series of signs.

Fire burning north of Reno consumes alm ost 48,000 acres

Known as the Virginia Mountains Complex, the five separate wildland fires include the Anderson (13,196 acres), Sage (4,238 acres), Seven Lakes (3,063 acres), Rock (2,293 acres) and Tule (27,379 acres) Fires. All are burning on mostly BLM land within about 20 miles of each other in an arc about 35 miles north of Reno.
Seven jailed in door-to-door care packages for soldiers cash scam
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/01/2016 - 8:49pmSeven out-of-state men were arrested Saturday on felony fraud and other charges after officers uncovered a scam where the suspects allegedly went door-to-door asking for money donations they said would be used to assemble care packages sent to U.S. soldiers overseas, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
Officers began investigating the men after dispatch received several calls from Carson City residents who said they were asked for money from one of the men and the pitch that was being used didn’t appear to be legitimate, according to the arrest report.
Cave Rock boat ramp to close for one to two months, Sand Harbor ramp closed for season

Nevada State Parks is installling new curbs and sidewalks, upgrading restrooms, removing the old unused boat ramp at the south end of the park, restriping the parking spaces and other enhancemnts to ease conjestion.

State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to just north of Granlibakken Road in Tahoe City that is upgrading storm water drainage and treatment systems, adding curb and gutter, resurfacing and realigning the road, adding new left-turn pockets and widening shoulders on an 8-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected by summer 2017.

Lightning caused fire north of Reno burns over 36,000 acres
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/31/2016 - 11:04pmThe cause of all the smoke in the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Virginia Mountains Complex Fire, has now consumed 36,091 acres of trees and sagebrush north of Reno.
Five separate wildland fires make up the group, including the Anderson (8,511 acres), Sage (4,238 acres), Seven Lakes (3,063 acres), and Tule (20,279 acres) Fires. All five fires were caused by lightning on July 28 and are burning within about 20 miles of each other in an arc about 35 miles north of Reno.
Firefighters were able to gain ground on the fires, now having 35 percent of the fire contained.

PCT hikers find comfort, supplies and angels in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sat, 07/30/2016 - 10:03pmWhat gained in popularity with the movie and book by Cheryl Strayed, "Wild," people are hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in record numbers, and many of them stop by South Lake Tahoe on their way from border to border.
To date, Lake of the Sky Outfitters at the South Lake Tahoe "Y" has seen about 650 of the PCT hikers stop by. Being the largest city near the 2,650 mile trail that takes most hikers about five months to complete, the community offers what many of them seek on "zero days": supplies, motels, a shower, lots of food and mail.
Four fires burning north of Reno adding to smoke in Lake Tahoe basin

The Virginia Mountains Complex is made up currently of four separate wildland fires, including the Anderson (5626 acres), Sage (4239 acres), Seven Lakes (3063 acres) and Tule (7267 acres) Fires. All of these lightning-caused fires are burning within about 20-miles of each other in an arc about 35-miles north of Reno.
The vast majority of the public lands burning are administered by the Bureau of Land Management-Carson City District.
Expect delays on Highway 89 from Tahoe to Truckee
Submitted by paula on Sat, 07/30/2016 - 5:44pmExpect delays of up to 15 minutes over the next several weeks as a pavement rehabilitation project begins on Highway 89 between Tahoe City and Alpine Meadows.
The project consists of grinding down the existing highway and filling it with hot mix asphalt in order to improve the ride for motorists and cyclists and to extend the life of the roadway.
The affected area is from a half-mile north of the “Y” intersection with Highway 28 in Tahoe City to just north of Alpine Meadows Road.

Dogs allowed back in the Upper Truckee Marsh, ban ending

Lake Tahoe's famed clarity threatened with warming temperatures

Lake Tahoe is experienced warming water, a 4.8 foot drop in clarity, increased algae and a lowering water level.
Thanks to global climate change, Lake Tahoe is warming faster than ever according to the report which covers results from tests conducted on the lake in 2015 concerning water temperature, clarity, invasive species and more.

Heat Exhaustion: According to WebMD, heat exhaustion is a heat-related illness that can occur after you've been exposed to high temperatures, and it often is accompanied by dehydration.
There are two types of heat exhaustion:
Water depletion. Signs include excessive thirst, weakness, headache, and loss of consciousness.

South Shore casinos show slight gain in revenue in June
Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/29/2016 - 6:49amIncome for casinos on the South Shore was up in June, 2016, recording a 6.47 percent gain in gaming win when compared to income from a year ago. They had a "win" of $18,753,534.
The gaming win represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.
For the fiscal year, the local casinos continue to be off from last year, with a drop in the gaming win by 3.84 percent.
Man sought for assaulting women in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/28/2016 - 6:45pmOn July 25, a woman visiting South Lake Tahoe reported a robbery and attempted sexual assault in a laundry room at Lakeland Village on Lake Tahoe Blvd.
Over the past year, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department has received at least three such reports and believe they may be related due to similarities in the subject's description and method of operation.
SLTPD wants to caution the public and is asking for help in identifying the suspect(s) in these cases.

Old KGID treatment plant and trailers removed for new luxury Lake Tahoe project
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/28/2016 - 2:17pmWhat was once home to 155 mobile homes and the KGID water treatment plant took one big step towards being a luxury condominium project on Wednesday when developers tore down the plant.
The mobile homes are all gone, with the remaining few given 90 day notices in January to vacate the property.

Was that fireball in the sky a comet, missile, rocket or what?
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/28/2016 - 1:15pmSocial media lit up about stories of a fireball streaking across the sky on Wednesday evening just after 9:30 p.m. A flaming image across the sky could be seen by people from Colorado to California, with most not knowing the cause, but admiring the beauty.
The "fireball" was actually space junk from China's newest satellite launcher a Chinese CZ-7 rocket that re-entered the atmosphere at 9:36 p.m. PST. According to the Associated Press, the rocket was launched from the Wenchang Satellite Launch Center in China on June 25 and was expected to reenter on July 28.
