Lake Valley Firefighters Ball features Vokab Kompany

South Tahoe High grad Robbie Gallo and his Vokab Kompany will play for guests at the 54th annual Lake Valley Firefighters Ball and fundraiser on April 8 at MontBleu Resort in South Lake Tahoe from 7:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue incidents

The following is a list of all 911 calls received by South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) from January 27 to February 18, 2016.

1/27 - 6 calls: 2 EMS, 1 interfacility transfer, 1 CO2 detector malfunction, 1 water/steam leak, 1 public service assistance.

1/28 - 11 calls: 8 EMS, 1 EMS psych transfer, 1 no incident found upon arrival, 1 unintentional alarm.

1/29 - 19 calls: 13 EMS, 1 public service assistance, 1 psych transfer, 1 no incident found upon arrival, 1 cancelled en route, 1 vehicle accident with injuries, 1 smoke detector malfunction.

Large boulder falls onto Highway 50 north of Cave Rock tunnel

A large boulder has rolled down onto Highway 50 on the Lake Tahoe east shore near Logan Creek, causing a dent in the road but no injuries.

The Nevada Highway Patrol was dispatched to the incident at 6:19 p.m. Saturday, February 20. Once there they found the boulder, it was reported to be eight feet across, blocking one lane north of the Cave Rock Tunnel in the westbound lane.

One passerby said the boulder was bigger than their Lincoln Navigator, at least six to seven tall.

Whittell High's basketball team wins Northern Nevada Division IV title

Whittell High School is heading to the Nevada state championships next week as the #1 seed from the north after taking care of Mineral County, winning 60-44.

The Warriors trip to the Northern Nevada Division IV title began with a 14-0 regular season record. In round one of the tournament they beat Jackpot 69-36, followed by a semifinal Whittell victory over Pyramid Lake 60-49.

South Tahoe boys basketball team heads to state tournament as #2 seed from the north

It was a total of eight points that separated the winner from the loser in the three games South Tahoe High played in the Northern Nevada Division 1-A basketball tournament this week.

On Thursday, the Vikings beat Spring Creek 69-66 in the quarterfinals.

On Friday, the Vikings beat Lowry 44-41 in the semifinals.

In Saturday's final game, South Tahoe was matched against Elko. It was another nail biter as Junior Noah Jackson attempted a three-point shot just as time ran out. It hit the rim, but didn't drop in.

Missing woman's car found near Emerald Bay

The car belonging to Carolyn Batchelor, the Zephyr Cove woman missing since February 15, has been found near Emerald Bay, but there is still no sign of the 69-year-old woman.

The California Highway Patrol located the vehicle in the area of Inspiration Point, overlooking the bay near South Lake Tahoe. El Dorado County Sheriff's Office and Search and Rescue team, along with Douglas County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue are searching the area where Batchelor's car was found.

Live Violence Free holds 8th annual Super Bowl-a-thon

Last year, almost $7,000 was raised to support the agency's programs to prevent child abuse.

Timothy Roger Stoll June 16,1938- February 12, 2016

Dr. Timothy Stoll died suddenly of galloping pneumonia on February 12, 2016 at the age of 77.

Dr. Stoll, an icon of the Tahoe area, practiced dentistry for over 50 years in both South Lake Tahoe and Minden.

End time nears for El Dorado County recall against supervisors, DA and auditor

On October 27, 2015, Sue Novasel, the County Supervisor representing South Lake Tahoe, Meyers, Tahoma and Pollock Pines was served a “notice of intent to circulate a recall petition” by a group of citizens who said they are “tired of the corruption and cronyism that has plagued our county for years.” It wasn’t only Novasel, but all five of the County Supervisors, Shiva Frentzen, Ron Mikulaco, Michael Ranalli and Brian Veerkamp.

South Tahoe and Whittell High boys basketball teams headed to state tournament

It was a nail biter Friday night in the North Valleys High gym in the South Tahoe High-Lowry High basketball game. The score went back and forth during the game, with South Tahoe having a one-point lead with just under a minute left to play. Senior Denzel Perez was fouled 4 seconds left, and nailed both free throws, taking the Vikings up by three.

STHS ended up with the win.

Highway 50 to be closed in both directions Sunday in El Dorado Hills

The Transportation Division of El Dorado County’s Community Development Agency will implement full closures of both directions of U.S. 50 between El Dorado Hills Boulevard and Bass Lake Road, as well as closures of the Latrobe Road on-ramp to eastbound U.S. Highway 50, the Bass Lake Road on-ramp to westbound U.S. Highway 50, and White Rock Road between Valley View Parkway and Entrada Circle. Closures are as follows:

Eastbound Closures on Sunday Morning, February 21

Eastbound lanes from Latrobe Road to Bass Lake Road will be closed from 6:00 am to 8:00 am.

NV Energy donates $6,000 for new trees in Angora Fire area

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) received a $6,000 donation from NV Energy to their Penny Pines Program, which will be used in LTBMU tree plantation sites including the Angora Fire area.

“Environmental respect is one of the core principles of NV Energy. We want to help provide for a viable and healthy forest,” said BJ Viglione, Supervisor Vegetation Management for NV Energy.

The Penny Pines Program was established in 1941 with the goal of restoring forest areas devastated by wildfire, flood, and other disasters.

Human Trafficking & Modern Slavery Discussed at SLT Library

TRPA to survey locals and visitors about travel modes

Lake Tahoe, Stateline, NV – The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency will conduct travel surveys with visitors and residents at several recreational and commercial locations throughout the Lake Tahoe Basin starting Friday, Feb. 19, 2016.

American Red Cross lifeguard training offered in South Lake Tahoe

All community members are invited to become an American Red Cross Certified Lifeguard through their training at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation and Swim Complex in March.

The South Lake Tahoe Recreation Department the class with instructor Liz Terzian who will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies. Participants will be trained and certified to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illness until EMS (emergency services) take over.

'Dough' opens in the Chateau, bringing fast, casual pizza to South Lake Tahoe

A year after opening his successful Sno Frozen Yogurt Cafe in the Chateau at the Village, Theron Baker joined family member and opened "Dough" right next door.

"Fast casual pizza is picking up across the country," said Baker. "I thought it'd be a good idea here."

Dough just opened on Saturday, February 13 and they've been hopping sever ince.

"The best thing about our pizza is that you don't have to share," added Baker.

Tahoe Warm Room celebrates two months since doors opened

It started with a spark of energy provided by Diana Hankins in December of 2013, and Thursday night two years of constant work and determination were celebrated at the Tahoe Warm Room during an Open House.

The Tahoe Warm Room opened their doors on December 18, 2015, and since then they have served 74 different people who have come in from the cold to keep warm, get clothing and blankets, a hot cup of coffee and meet with a social worker, if desired.

Sheriff seeks public's help in finding missing Lake Tahoe woman

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is looking for a Lake Tahoe woman who has not been seen or heard from since Monday, February 15, 2016 at 5:10 p.m.

Carolyn Batchelor, 69, was last seen by her roommate as she left her home in the 100 block of Willow Drive in Zephyr Cove, Nev.

She has not returned calls and her destination was unknown.

When last seen, Carolyn was wearing a long black coat. She is 5'07" tall, weighs about 180 pounds, has shoulder length blonde hair and blue eyes. She was last seen leaving in her silver Honda Pilot SUV with Nevada plates HP2295.

Storm passing through South Lake Tahoe, chain controls remain

The sun is coming out over Lake Tahoe after a quick moving storm left over two feet of snow at the upper elevations, one foot at lake level.

Chain controls remain at this time, with chains are required on all vehicles except 4WD with snow tires on all 4 wheels from Meyers to Twin Bridges.

Public shares their vision for the future look of South Lake Tahoe

Do you like natural materials, a modern use of metal and class or a combination of several styles in the look of buildings, signage and landscaping?

The City of South Lake Tahoe held their second public workshop on design standards for the community at City Hall on Wednesday evening, and have invited everyone to participate in an online survey.

Results from tonight's event, combined with those received online will be compiled and brought back to the public in a final meeting around March 9, though the date hasn't been officially set as of yet.

South Tahoe and Whittell High boys basketball teams head to playoffs Thursday

The boys varsity basketball teams from both high schools on the South Shore are playing in the Northern Nevada playoffs starting Thursday.

South Tahoe High boys, who are the number three seed in Northern Nevada NIAA Division 1-A, are headed to North Valleys High in Reno Thursday afternoon for their quarterfinal game against Spring Creek at 4:40 p.m. The STHS Vikings are split on the season against the Spartans with one loss, and one win.

Tahoe Regional Planning Agency is accepting nominations for Lake Spirit Awards to honor real people making real progress protecting Lake Tahoe. Members of the public are encouraged to nominate exemplary members of the community who are going above and beyond the call of duty to protect the beauty and clarity of the Lake.

South Lake Tahoe man on El Dorado County DA's Wanted List

The El Dorado County District Attorney's office released their weekly "Wanted" list Wednesday, and Brett Matthew Bell is on that list.

"Bell is a habitual offender in the South Lake Tahoe area," according to their press release.

Bell is wanted for the theft of a 2015 Jeep Cherokee from the valet parking garage at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel.

The 27-year-old is Caucasian, 6'0", 180 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.

If seen, call 911 to report his location.

Woman dies at Heavenly Mountain Resort after hitting tree

A 77-year-old Wisconsin woman has died from injuries received after hitting a tree while skiing at Heavenly Mountain Resort on February 16, 2016.

Kathryn Strangman of Madison, Wisconsin had been skiing on the Nevada side of the resort when she hit a tree. Ski Patrol attempted lifesaving treatment according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

Sgt. Pat Brooks of the department said an autopsy is scheduled and the investigation is continuing.

Lake of the Sky Outfitters Movie Night

Lake of the Sky Outfitters will be showing the movie "Third Man on the Mountain", a Disney classic about a young man trying to fulfill his fathers quest to to climb the mountain that killed him, "The Citadel". Filmed on and around the Matterhorn the film accurately depicts the climbing style and equipment of the Golden Age of mountaineering. The actors had to learn to climb to make the movie more realistic.

Admission is free. We will accept donations to defray the costs.

Motel and surrounding property could be demolished to make way for new project

The Knights Inn could be purchased by the City of South Lake Tahoe for $6 million should a grant be awarded them by the California Tahoe Conservancy. If that happens, the City would purchase, and then demolish, the motel located on Highway 50 near Ski Run Boulevard to make way for a new environmental and retail project.

There is grant money available through the CTC which the City will apply for. The funds come from the state's Proposition 1 Water Bond which was approved by voters in 2014 to authorize $7.545 billion in general obligation bonds for water projects.

UC Davis bringing Science Fair to South Lake Tahoe; Volunteers needed

The UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Education Research Center (TERC) is expanding their successful Science Expo program to South Lake Tahoe through funding they were awarded last week by Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe.

Through a partnership with the Lake Tahoe Unified School District, TERC will host three days of the expo March 30 through April 1 at Lake Tahoe Community College.

During the day the expo will be presented to students in South Lake Tahoe and the community is invited to a public session March 31 from 4:45 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

South Lake Tahoe woman running across US to bring awareness to obesity

Ari Ramos, a 2004 graduate of South Tahoe High, is running across the country to bring awareness to obesity. She is using all 2,700 miles of the journey to engage with school children and communities about healthy lifestyles.

Ari touched the Atlantic Ocean and left Jacksonville, Florida on January 28. Today, Tuesday, February 16, she is 350 miles away in Fort Walton Beach.

Forest Service to host open house for Off-Highway Vehicle Grant

Off-Highway Vehicles (OHV) are the focus of an upcoming open house hosted by the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) on February 25, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. They will be providing information and asking for public input on developing three preliminary applications for the OHV Cooperative Funds grants that will be submitted to the State of California Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division (OHMVR).

Deadline approaching to get booth space for Tahoe Chamber Business Expo

The annual Tahoe Chamber Business Expo will be held at Harvey's Convention Center on April 1, but time is closing in on signing up for the last 20 available booth spaces.

The 2016 Expo is the South Shore’s largest business and networking experience produced by Tahoe Chamber and it showcases businesses and their products, programs and services to over 1,500 attendees.
