El Dorado County Sheriff's Deputy on paid leave has third DUI

John "Tony" Broadfoot, a deputy with the El Dorado County Sheriff's Department, was arrested by the California Highway Patrol on March 4 on charges of driving under the influence after an accident in the Shingle Springs area. This was Broadfoot's third DUI arrest in as many months.

On December 8, 2015, Broadfoot was placed on administrative leave after being arrested on DUI charges by the CHP in South Lake Tahoe. Then on February 25, 2016, he was arrested, again by CHP officers, when found to be under the influence after rolling his vehicle near Ice House Road and Highway 50.

"Frosty-5-0" team formed in Douglas County for Polar Bear Plunge

The Polar Bear Plunge on Saturday, March 19 just got safer with the addition of a team made up of Douglas County Sheriff's Deputies and Explorer Scouts. Dubbed Frosty 5-0, the group will be swimming in the annual event for Northern Nevada Special Olympics at Zephyr Cove at Lake Tahoe starting at 9:00 a.m.

County selects Courtney Walker for County Stormwater Program Manager

South Lake Tahoe residents may remember Courtney Walker when she worked for the Tahoe Resource Conservation District and Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, but now she has a new job as the newly hired Douglas County Stormwater Program Manager.

She is bringing with her over 10 years of experience with stormwater and watershed management. With much of her experience in the Tahoe and Carson River Watershed area, Courtney is well versed in local stormwater and watershed coordination.

US Forest Service seeks Lake Tahoe Basin off-highway vehicle comments

The State of California is offering financial assistance through grants for well managed off-highway vehicle recreation areas, and the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is applying for one. LTBMU would like to hear what local OHV needs are in the basin, so they are accepting public comment from March 8 to April 4, 2016. .

Funds for the grants come from the State of California Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation (OHMVR) Division.

New water lines and fire hydrants in place to fight Lake Tahoe wildfires

Over the past eight building seasons, a bi-state collaborative effort of the South Tahoe Public Utility District, U.S. Forest Service and the other area water agencies has enhanced the Lake Tahoe Basin's water infrastructure to better fight wildfires.

Tibetan Monks returning to South Lake Tahoe

Tibetan monks from the Gaden Shartse Monastery are returning to South Lake Tahoe from April 1 to April 6 with a full schedule of ancient and colorful participatory activities, Dharma talks, meditations, and cultural rituals to promote inner healing.

Events, unless otherwise noted, will be at the Blue Angel Cafe, located at 1132 Ski Run Blvd.

All events are donation based and all proceeds will go towards funding the construction of the Phukhang College House at Gaden Shartse, which houses over 600 exiled monks in the Tibetan Refugee Zone in India.

Space available at South Lake Tahoe's Red Cross lifeguard training

The South Lake Tahoe Recreation Department is offering American Red Cross Certified Lifeguard Training. Participants must register for this class by March 14th at www.cslt.sportssignup.com. The class is conducted by American Red Cross Certified Instructor Liz Terzian and will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies. Participants will be trained and certified to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illness until EMS (emergency services) take over.

Pet of the Week: Pepper

Pepper is a super sweet 18-month-old who loves children and babies. She walks nicely on leash and loves to play with other dogs. She also does well keeping the cats and squirrels out of the yard so she does need to be in a cat free home.

Kudos: Heavenly Ski Patrol adopts a day at Bread & Broth

Bread & Broth, a non-profit, all volunteer organization whose mission is to ease hunger in the South Tahoe Community, would like to recognize the Heavenly Ski Patrol for hosting their second “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” this year. Heavenly’s Ski Patrol organization provided the funding for the 138 meals served at B&B’s Monday evening dinner on February 29th. This Adopt A Day was a follow up to their sponsorship on January 18th.

Dr. Mandi Weavil wins Dancing With the Tahoe Stars

A packed house at MontBleu Resort Saturday night witnessed ten local celebrity couples dancing for the ultimate prize, the mirror ball trophy, during Tahoe Art's Project annual Dancing With the Tahoe Stars fundraiser.

After a few weeks of practicing with their trained professional partner, the celebrities put on an entertaining show that brought out the cheers and applause, and lots of money for the non-profit.

Final episode of Downton Abbey featured during KNPB fundraiser

For the past six years, fans of Downton Abbey have enjoyed following the lives of the Crawley family and their cadre of servants in the Earl of Grantham's Edwardian country house.

Sunday night, the popular show comes to an end, and KNPB in Reno, the area's public television station, celebrated with a fundraiser inside the National Automobile Museum. Attendees, many of whom were dressed in period costumes, were treated to an advanced viewing of the final episode, gourmet British cuisine and prizes.

South Lake Tahoe Sunday weather: One storm wave passes, heavy snow expected this evening

Ski resorts are celebrating 10" to 20" of new snow overnight, with more in the forecast for Sunday evening in South Lake Tahoe.

The National Weather Service said the next wave Sunday will bring with it strong winds and, at times, a heavy rate of snow fall of one to two inches per hour. Lake level is expected to see an additional 3" to 7". Elevations over 7,000 ft were forecast to get two to four feet out of these storms.

"Brave the Shave" St. Baldrick's event to raise money for childhood cancer research

The event has already raised over $45,000, even though the shaving doesn't begin until 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 5. This is the fifth consecutive year for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation event, Brave the Shave for Kids with Cancer, in South Lake Tahoe. They have moved it this year to the Heavenly Mountain Resort California Lodge located at 3860 Saddle Road.

The St. Baldrick's Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity that funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government.

LTUSD School Board: Immunizations, pay raises, improvements and Nevada student plan

The agenda for the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board of Education on Tuesday, March 8 is a full one. Board members will be addressing the new state law concerning immunizations, new lights for the soccer field at South Tahoe Middle School, a conditioning room and new flooring at South Tahoe High, student privacy, finances, a 4.5% raise for employees, and discuss a tuition agreement with Douglas County Schools. The meeting begins at the District Office at 5:00 p.m. with closed session, with the public portion beginning about 6:00 p.m.

Jamie Anderson wins third consecutive U.S. Open Title in Vail

The American slopestyle snowboarders reigned supreme at the 35th edition of the Burton US Open on Friday. Kyle Mack (West Bloomfield, MI) scored his first major slopestyle win and fellow Michigander Eric Beauchemin (Grand Blanc, MI) finished right behind him in second. On the women’s side Jamie Anderson (South Lake Tahoe, CA) took home her third-consecutive US Open title and Karly Shorr (Milford, MI) took second.

Woman dies in single vehicle rollover accident in Washoe Valley

One woman died and a man was taken to the hospital by Care Flight after a single car rollover accident in the Washoe Valley early Friday morning.

Troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) responded to the accident on I-580 north of Bellevue Drive at 6:12 a.m on March 4, 2016.
