The top 5 ranked U23 men and women, and the top 6 ranked U20 men and women are selected from a combination of FIS World Cup results, FIS points, and the U.S. National Championships. SBSTA Club Nordic athlete J.C. Schoonmaker of Tahoe City automatically qualified from his World Cup results as a member of the U.S. Ski Team.

A quick-moving slider-type winter system is expected to impact the Sierra and western Nevada on Sunday into Sunday night, bringing gusty ridge winds and light snowfall accumulations. On its tail will be some bitterly cold temperatures.

Placer County supervisors approves almost $4.5M for eight Tahoe projects

The Capital Advisory Project Committee (CAP) recommended the projects that will be funded by Tourism Occupancy Tax (TOT) funds.
During this year’s grant cycle, the CAP Committee received 13 project requests totaling $8.1 million. The committee determined three applications did not meet funding criteria and two other projects were supported by the committee but were encouraged to seek other identified funding sources.

The Eastern Sierra History Series continues o Sunday, January 29 when the Wylder Hotel Hope Valley hosts "Snowshoe Thompson-Mailman of the Sierra" at 1 p.m.
The Chautauqua-style presentation will be on Thompson who carried the mail across the Sierra Nevada mountains during winter snows for 20 years. He would travel over the 180-mile round trip in just five days on his hand-crafted snow skates (skis) with nothing more than a jacket, dried meat, matches, and his 80 lbs. of mail.

Prevent snow-related gas leaks

This is not uncommon after early, heavy, and wet snowfall events and North Tahoe Fire shares information on ways locals can prevent snow-related gas leaks.
The series of storms in recent weeks resulted in heavy snow loading on propane tanks and plumbing systems.

The Tahoe Arts Project is bringing the Puppet Art Theater to South Lake Tahoe in February. Under the artistic direction of Art Grueneberger, the theater company tours theaters, festivals, and public events all over California.
With a keen sense of humor and a flair for drama, Grueneberger is a master at developing marvelous puppet shows that delight audiences of all ages.
The public performance will be the Three Little Pigs on February 10 at 6 p.m. in Lake Tahoe Community College's Duke Theater. It is free entry but donations are accepted.
Caltrans hopes to have SR89 around Emerald Bay open on Friday
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/25/2023 - 10:08pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - State Route 89 remains closed around Emerald Bay as crews work to remove vast amounts of snow from the roadway. Caltrans said its South Lake Tahoe area maintenance crew began the arduous task of clearing the snow with blowers, graders, and plows. They said crews encountered slides at multiple locations, one as high as 50 feet and 300 feet long, and six others between 25 and 30 feet tall.
The department is targeting Friday to reopen the highway.

Tree Ring Project unveiled in South Lake Tahoe

The tree was estimated to be alive from 1844 to 2017, so dates important in the history of the area are identified on the rings of the tree. It is hanging on the wall in the lobby of the Lake Tahoe Airport for all to experience.
The Tree Ring Project is a joint effort between the South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce, Kenny Curtzwiler from K&K Services, the Lake Tahoe Historical Society, and the City of South Lake Tahoe.
Road crews out fixing potholes around Lake Tahoe, a constant issue faced each winter

While almost none of the storms on their own has been catastrophic or even record-breaking, the constant pounding has taken its toll, and area roads show it.

Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/24/2023 - 6:49pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE and TRUCKEE, Calif. — The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) is expanding its “Pet Pantry” program, which helps owners keep their pets despite financial hardships or other barriers. HSTT launched the program during the recession of 2010, offering Truckee residents free pet food and supplies to maintain their pet’s care. When the South Lake Tahoe office opened in 2019, the agency expanded the program to that area.
Now, every Lake Tahoe resident is eligible.

Due to the road conditions and blocked driveways, only a few cooks could get to St. Theresa’s Grace Hall, so hot pizza from Pizza Hut, a green salad, and broccoli were served in lieu of the planned menu.

In the photo above, American Legion Post 795 Auxiliary Secretary Sandy McKnight and Rob Canny of South Tahoe High School and part-time bartender at Post 795, joined forces this past fall.
Rob had informed the Auxiliary of food-insecure students at the high school. Since then, four carloads of food have been gathered by the Auxiliary and delivered by Rob for STHS. The Auxiliary also supports the Food Pantry at Lake Tahoe Community College.

City of South Lake Tahoe seeks one-year franchise agreement with Liberty Utilities

During its January 10 meeting, the City Council rejected Liberty Utilities' request for a 25-year franchise agreement, and instead offered one-year as staff examines all possibilities for services in a first reading. At its January 24 meeting, the Council has the approval of the one-year plan on the consent agenda.

Liberty Utilities is the provider of electricity on the California side of Lake Tahoe except for a small area near Truckee that is serviced by NV Energy, the carrier for the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe. Liberty gets its power from NV Energy.
Column: Is arthritis causing your hip pain?

Osteoarthritis, or “wear and tear” arthritis, refers to the breakdown or degeneration of the cartilage that coats and protects the bone surfaces where there is movement in a joint. Unfortunately, our body does not repair or regenerate new cartilage when it becomes injured and wears down. The loss of the protective joint cartilage leads to friction between bone surfaces which can cause joint pain and stiffness.
Lake Wind Advisory issued for Lake Tahoe, wind chills could be hazardous at upper elevations
Submitted by paula on Sat, 01/21/2023 - 10:23pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A cold front will bring gusty winds from the east, 80-120 mph along the Sierra and Carson Range ridges from Sunday to Monday morning. Starting overnight, winds will increase over the Sierra ridgetops.
A Lake Wind Advisory is in place from 1 p.m. Sunday to 4 a.m. Monday. Expect winds from the east, 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph at lake level with waves 1 to 3 feet.

The following are calls that only pertain to the South and West Shore, including Meyers, South Lake Tahoe, Meeks Bay, Tahoma, and the Echo Summit area. Marcia was dedicated to the youth of South Lake Tahoe for decades and represented the spirit of the South Lake Tahoe community. The mayor said it was essential for the City to commemorate her life on what would have been her 67th birthday.
Cold nights and sunny days expected in the week ahead for Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 01/20/2023 - 11:52amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Now that the historically active weather period at Lake Tahoe has passed, people can get out and about, and finish shoveling all that snow. Expect cold and tranquil weather conditions.
Sunny days and a lack of storms, along with plentiful snow at resorts, expect possible traffic this weekend around Lake Tahoe. Temperatures will remain below average with light easterly winds in place.
Snow removal teams will continue work on area roads and no street parking is allowed during snow conditions.

Free tax return preparation in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 01/20/2023 - 11:35amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The AARP Tax-Aide Foundation is bringing free tax return preparation to the South Lake Tahoe community starting February 23. Volunteers will be at the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center located at 3050 Lake Tahoe Blvd.
The preparers will be there Each Thursday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. starting February 23, and Saturdays starting February 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m
Taxpayers should bring last year’s return, all 2022 tax documents, a photo ID, and social security cards for all persons listed on the return. For more
