Heavy snow + holiday crowds + power outage = South Lake Tahoe ski resort parking nightmare

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a perfect storm over the holiday weekend at Heavenly Mountain Resort in South Lake Tahoe, and it wasn't just the snow. A massive power outage over the New Year's holiday weekend on the Nevada side of the ski resort forced all operations onto the California side and shut down mountain access via the gondola. This left just the California Base Lodge as the only access point to the mountain after feet of snow fell, creating what should have been an epic day on the slopes.

Instead, it was a parking and mountain access nightmare.

City of South Lake Tahoe urges residents to prepare for potential flooding impacts from rain on snow event

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The National Weather Service has forecast more snow and rain over the next week, including a strong atmospheric river beginning on Monday, January 9. With this, comes the potential of heavy rainfall across the region and the threat of flooding. The flooding threat is heightened due to existing snow and ice on the ground and streams and river basins that are already elevated after numerous storms. If the Monday storm turns warm and brings the forecasted 2-2.5” or more of rain that also melts snow, we could experience similar flooding to 2017 and prior years.

Column: Are you aware of Urgent Care?

Illness and injury often pop up without warning. A slip on ice leads to a swollen ankle, kids wake up with a sudden fever, or we may experience a blockage in the ear that’s affecting hearing. While every scenario is different, knowing where to go in a health emergency can cut down on fear and anxiety in the moment.

Two irresistible forces are converging over the election of a Speaker of the House. One is simple math; the other is the full weight of history.

Republicans are only in the majority if they vote as a majority. In a House divided between 222 Republicans and 212 Democrats, any five Republican dissidents can forfeit that majority at any time and on any issue.
