SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Great Basin Institute is seeking a qualified artist(s) for the Tallac Historic Site artist-in-residence program. This is a dynamic role, with camping facilities near the lake provided.
Coinciding with our volunteer program, the ideal candidate must have their own RV to live on-site and full hookups are provided. In addition, the candidate should be available for several weeks during the summer, and comfortable interacting with children.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Snowpack measurements for the Lake Tahoe Basin and the rest of the Sierra Nevada were taken this week, and as expected they are well above average.
There was a big boost from one of the wettest three-week periods on record this January, keeping the snowpack deep and full of water content. California has had eight or nine atmospheric rivers so far this winter. Last year there were two to three. A large number of atmospheric rivers has allowed the wide distribution of rain and snow.
Clean Up The Lake has ambitious dive schedule for Lake Tahoe and other areas of the Sierra in 2023

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Clean Up the Lake (CUTL) completed a successful 72-mile clean-up of Lake Tahoe in 2022, and plans to return this year as well as dives at Fallen Leaf Lake, Echo Lake, Boca and Stampede Reservoirs in Truckee, California, and four different lakes in Mono County and the Mammoth Lakes Basin.
The non-profit organization is committed to fighting back against plastic and all forms of pollution both above and below the surface of its local waterways.

Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. and the meeting and lunch will begin at 12 p.m. South Lake Tahoe City Councilmember Tamara Wallace will be the guest speaker. Councilmember Wallace will speak on the city’s goals and what is ahead for the city and its residents. Also speaking is the Nevada State Controller Andy Matthews.

Family's donation brings new K-9 officer Bubba to Douglas County

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - In memory of their son, Scott and Laure Slothower made a generous donation to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) for a new K-9 officer.
Thanks to that generous donation, K-9 officer, Bubba is now a member of the DCSO team. Bubba had a welcoming ceremony on Tuesday.

The Nevada Division of Forestry is scheduled to burn hand piles near Incline Village. Smoke will be present. In addition, smoke may still be visible from the USDA Forest Service’s burn operations last week near Baldwin Beach. For current air quality, visit AirNow.

Nevada monthly gaming report: South Shore casinos drop, Nevada revenues increase

Nevada’s nonrestricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $1,314,478,876 for the month of December 2022, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board's monthly report released today. This amounts to a 14.3 percent increase compared to December 2021, when licensees reported a gaming win of $1,149,986,166. For the fiscal year to date (July 1, 2022 through December 31, 2022), the gaming win has slightly increased, up by 2.87 percent.
The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Susan Baker and Sara Pierce were walking outside of Lake Tahoe Community College on Monday, January 30 when they came across the bobcat pictured above.
Sightings of the beautiful creatures have been occurring throughout the South Shore this winter. In one photo above, Don Flint saw one in a yard off of Pioneer Trail.
Bobcats used to rarely be seen around the Lake Tahoe Basin, or perhaps it was being more elusive and not allowing themselves to be seen, but they are making their presence known this winter.
They always elicit excitement when spotted.
Lake Tahoe Community College mourns the loss of beloved faculty member Dr. Clinton Culp

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) faculty, staff, and students are mourning the passing of Wilderness Education and Outdoor Leadership director and faculty lead Dr. Clinton Culp.
He experienced a non-trauma medical emergency on Friday, January 27 while leading an avalanche instructor training class near Luther Pass. Despite the best life-saving efforts of the staff and students in the field, some of whom are medical professionals, and the emergency professionals who arrived at the scene to assist, Dr. Culp passed away. He was just 56 years old.

Tahoe Interagency Bear Team to teach people how to live responsibly with bears

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - A joint effort between the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) and the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) has created an innovative program called BearWise. This aims to help people live more responsibly with bears with guidance from several Lake Tahoe agencies.
This has long been the focus of wildlife advocates around the lake, and BearWise is meant to provide the same consistent messaging regarding bears and how to manage human-bear conflict across state lines and through all Tahoe agencies.

RENO, Nev. — The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) is seeking input in the selection of a logo to celebrate its 150th anniversary. Members of the community can select their favorite logo online starting today, Jan. 30, through Monday, Feb. 6.
On October 12, 1874, the University opened its doors to seven students in Elko, Nevada, marking the humble beginnings of Nevada’s original land grant university. The University will celebrate its 150th anniversary on Oct. 12, 2024.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One will have to travel far distances to find someplace warm this week as the Lake Tahoe Basin will see some of the coldest air in some time. Bitter cold temperatures are expected for Monday and Tuesday around Lake Tahoe and Northern Nevada, with some locations expected to see their coldest low temperatures in the last five to ten years, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

South Lake Tahoe professional skier Kyle Smaine died Sunday after being overtaken by an avalanche in Japan, according to the Mountain Gazette. The 31-year-old had been skiing while on a marketing trip for Ikon Pass and Nagano Tourism when the avalanche occurred Sunday afternoon, Japan local time, the Mountain Gazette said.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe High (STHS) Dance Team took top honors on Saturday at the Northern Nevada Cheer and Dance Invitational held at Damonte Ranch High School in Reno.
The team won first place in the Jazz Dance Category.
Leading the STHS team are coaches Kylee Finnegan, Ashley Smith, Izzy Preston, Bri Alamilla, and choreographer Ashley Smith.
It was a lot of hard work to take the top spot including weeks of 7 a.m. practices, said Coach Kylee.
Man who had been living in van found deceased inside in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) found a man in his 40s deceased in his van on Saturday, January 28, 2023.
A relative of the unidentified man called SLTPD, telling them he hadn't heard from the relative since before Christmas Day. The caller said the missing man had been living in his van, and they gave SLTPD areas where he was known to park.

The top 5 ranked U23 men and women, and the top 6 ranked U20 men and women are selected from a combination of FIS World Cup results, FIS points, and the U.S. National Championships. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Ready for the cold and snow to be a thing of the past? That isn't going to happen for a while, and the next winter weather system in the Lake Tahoe forecast shows that.
A quick-moving slider-type winter system is expected to impact the Sierra and western Nevada on Sunday into Sunday night, bringing gusty ridge winds and light snowfall accumulations. On its tail will be some bitterly cold temperatures.

Placer County supervisors approves almost $4.5M for eight Tahoe projects

The Placer County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved $4,493,818 for eight capital improvement projects during its January 24 meeting. The Capital Advisory Project Committee (CAP) recommended the projects that will be funded by Tourism Occupancy Tax (TOT) funds.
During this year’s grant cycle, the CAP Committee received 13 project requests totaling $8.1 million. The committee determined three applications did not meet funding criteria and two other projects were supported by the committee but were encouraged to seek other identified funding sources.

The Eastern Sierra History Series continues o Sunday, January 29 when the Wylder Hotel Hope Valley hosts "Snowshoe Thompson-Mailman of the Sierra" at 1 p.m.
The Chautauqua-style presentation will be on Thompson who carried the mail across the Sierra Nevada mountains during winter snows for 20 years. He would travel over the 180-mile round trip in just five days on his hand-crafted snow skates (skis) with nothing more than a jacket, dried meat, matches, and his 80 lbs. of mail.

Prevent snow-related gas leaks

The Sierra received remarkable snowfall in a short period of time, leading to a spike in propane-related calls to local fire agencies. This is not uncommon after early, heavy, and wet snowfall events and North Tahoe Fire shares information on ways locals can prevent snow-related gas leaks.
The series of storms in recent weeks resulted in heavy snow loading on propane tanks and plumbing systems.

The Tahoe Arts Project is bringing the Puppet Art Theater to South Lake Tahoe in February. Under the artistic direction of Art Grueneberger, the theater company tours theaters, festivals, and public events all over California.
With a keen sense of humor and a flair for drama, Grueneberger is a master at developing marvelous puppet shows that delight audiences of all ages.
The public performance will be the Three Little Pigs on February 10 at 6 p.m. in Lake Tahoe Community College's Duke Theater. It is free entry but donations are accepted.
Caltrans hopes to have SR89 around Emerald Bay open on Friday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - State Route 89 remains closed around Emerald Bay as crews work to remove vast amounts of snow from the roadway. Caltrans said its South Lake Tahoe area maintenance crew began the arduous task of clearing the snow with blowers, graders, and plows. They said crews encountered slides at multiple locations, one as high as 50 feet and 300 feet long, and six others between 25 and 30 feet tall.
The department is targeting Friday to reopen the highway.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Lake Tahoe and game lovers have something new to celebrate - the MONOPOLY: Lake Tahoe Edition is here! Mr. Monopoly was at Edgewood Tahoe Wednesday afternoon to officially declare the region as ‘Passing GO.’

Tree Ring Project unveiled in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The first of six history tree rings was unveiled at South Lake Tahoe City Hall on Tuesday. The tree was estimated to be alive from 1844 to 2017, so dates important in the history of the area are identified on the rings of the tree. It is hanging on the wall in the lobby of the Lake Tahoe Airport for all to experience.
The Tree Ring Project is a joint effort between the South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce, Kenny Curtzwiler from K&K Services, the Lake Tahoe Historical Society, and the City of South Lake Tahoe.
Road crews out fixing potholes around Lake Tahoe, a constant issue faced each winter

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Sierra Nevada has had a pounding this winter, so far, with several feet of snow, and atmospheric rivers spreading snow and rain throughout the Lake Tahoe Basin. While almost none of the storms on their own has been catastrophic or even record-breaking, the constant pounding has taken its toll, and area roads show it.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe City Council will be holding its annual Strategic Planning Retreat on Tuesday, January 31 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the ballroom at the Landing (4104 Lakeshore Blvd).
This is an open, public meeting. Seating will be available for attendees and it will also be live-streamed on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/CityofSLT.
