Warming trend bringing a pleasant, sunny Thanksgiving at Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A gradual warming trend will bring temperatures to near seasonal averages by Thanksgiving Day. Otherwise, dry conditions will remain through most of the upcoming week. A more unsettled pattern could arrive toward the end of the holiday weekend, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Barton Memorial Hospital awarded 'A' grade for patient safety

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Barton Memorial Hospital received another ‘A’ grade for patient safety from the Leapfrog Group. The Leapfrog Group uses more than 30 evidence-based measures of publicly available hospital safety data—including data related to medication administration, falls and trauma, and hand hygiene—that are peer-reviewed by a national panel of medical experts to assign grades to more than 2,900 U.S. acute care hospitals. This ‘A’ grade is a result of collaborative, team-driven systems in place at Barton Health that protect patients from harm.

South Lake Tahoe voters approve Measure G to streamline cannabis business fee collection

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe voters overwhelmingly approved Measure G in the November 8 election.

Measure G – the City of South Lake Tahoe Cannabis Funding/Taxation Measure – was placed on the ballot for local voter consideration, following an audit of government processes that identified the annual cannabis business fee collection process as one which could be streamlined.

STPUD receives awards for financial and technology excellence

El Dorado County election results clearer with about 300 ballots left to count

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - As promised, more results from the November 8 election were released today in El Dorado County, with 70 - 343 ballots with signature cured remaining. The next results will be released on Monday, November 21 at 5 p.m. Voter turnout in the county overall was 64.70 percent of the 138,537 registered voters.

Barton Health takes next steps toward a Nevada hospital and expanding care on south shore

Proposed NDOT US-50 Corridor Management plan draws both concern and kudos

Everyone who reads the local news knows a large number of collisions occur on US50 between Round Hill and Cave Rock, many of those caused by vehicles crossing over the double yellow center line. Other crashes are caused by the lack of safe turns both off and onto the highway, leading to the stretch of highway being more dangerous than other Nevada highways.

Heavenly Gondola opening for sightseeing trips

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Gondola at Heavenly Mountain Resort will be back open for sightseeing only starting Friday, November 18. It will be operating from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Guests can purchase their sightseeing tickets at ticket windows, and Epic Pass holders will also have access to scenic Gondola rides for free. Tamarack Lodge and Café Blue will also open for food and beverage as a result of operating the Gondola.

Skiing and riding will not be accessible from the Gondola at this time.

Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus has announced its 17th annual production of Handel's Messiah with performances in five distinct locations. The Reno-Tahoe-Truckee and South Tahoe communities continue enjoying the wonderful holiday tradition of Toccata’s Messiah production.

Messiah was first performed in Dublin, Ireland on March 23, 1742, and was conducted by its composer, George Frederic Handel. It continues to be a masterpiece that has left audiences in awe for 277 years.

Community Christmas Tree arrives at Heavenly Village

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A large fir tree made its way through South Lake Tahoe Wednesday morning, escorted by the California Highway Patrol and South Lake Tahoe Police Department from the airport to its destination at Heavenly Village.

For seven years, Kenny Curtzwiler of K & K Services has gone in search of the "perfect tree" for the community, normally scouting it out a year or two before it's needed. Many times the tree comes from a forest thinning project, and Kenny asks if it could remain until needed.

Collectively, they’ve surpassed their 2025 interim goal of 50 percent progress toward net-zero three years early and reached 100 percent renewable electricity in North America and 96 percent worldwide.

TRPA opens annual Lake Tahoe mooring lottery on December 1

Lake Tahoe, Calif./Nev. — Entries for new Lake Tahoe moorings (buoys, boat lifts, etc.) can be submitted by lakefront owners to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) starting on December 1, 2022. Annually there is a mooring lottery and the Lake Tahoe Shoreline Plan. This annual lottery will continue until all allocations allowed under the plan are distributed.

The plan, approved in 2018, places a cap on the total number of moorings and piers allowed in the Tahoe Region and established this annual lottery system to allocate new moorings.

South Lake Tahoe's new recreation center project to be delayed one year after council rejects bids

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During the South Lake Tahoe City Council's meeting on Tuesday, the council voted to reject all bids for the Recreation and Aquatics Center project in the center of town.

A public bid opening for the second phase of the project was held on October 24, 2022. The City's Public Works department, in coordination with their pre-construction team SierraCon/CORE had estimated the cost of this phase would be approximately $52M.

Laine wins El Dorado County supervisor seat, City Council looking clearer as most votes counted

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Most ballots have been counted in South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County, with 850 left to be tabulated for the whole county. With the trend of votes since the November 8 election, results should not change but the final count on Friday, November 18 will make everything clear.

Brooke Laine is the new supervisor for El Dorado County District V. Any new votes would not change the results as Laine is ahead of Kenny Curtzwiler by 2,111 votes.

Prescribed fire operations continue around Lake Tahoe

Members of the Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) will continue conducting prescribed fire operations this week in the Lake Tahoe Basin. If conditions and weather remain favorable, California State Parks, Nevada Division of Forestry, North Lake Tahoe, and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts will be burning piles in numerous locations. Carson City man in jail after allegedly stabbing Douglas County man multiple times

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A Carson City man was arrested Monday after allegedly stabbing a Douglas County man in the 800 block of Mica Drive.

On November 14, 2022, at approximately 10:45 a.m., deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) were called to the Indian Hills home for a report of a stabbing. When the deputies arrived they found a male victim with multiple stab wounds to the torso. He was transported via Care Flight to Renown Medical center for treatment. His current condition is unknown.

560 Christmas tree permits sold in first day in South Lake Tahoe

UPDATE: USFS LTBMU has updated its figures from tree permits sold on Monday. They started the day with 1,360 permits to sell, and sold 560, leaving 800 permits still available.

Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless receives $100K donation from Kyle and Jessica Aster

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) has announced they received an incredibly generous donation from Kyle and Jessica Aster. The Asters made a donation of $100,000 that will help with their operational shortfall as winter begins. These funds are helping at a
critical time as temperatures plummet, more snow is on the way, and they are under renovations on rooms for new tenants. Currently, forty rooms are housing vulnerable members of our community, and twenty more units will be available in 2023.

One woman dies, two children injured in early morning collision south of Lake Tahoe

One person died and two children were injured in an early morning traffic collision Monday morning at Picketts Junction.

At approximately 4:25 a.m. on November 14, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) was notified of the solo vehicle collision. CHP units arrived and found a white 2019 Hyundai sedan had collided with a small boulder. It was determined the driver of the sedan had been traveling southbound on SR-89, approaching SR-88 (Picketts Junction).

Restoration of Upper Truckee Marsh completed in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the last three years the California Tahoe Conservancy (Conservancy) has been working on restoring the 1,600-acre Upper Truckee Marsh in South Lake Tahoe. After years of damage caused by development and moves made by ranchers, the river lost its natural meandering flow and has been just one straight channel of water. Now, the work of the Conservancy has completed the steps needed to re-create the wetland with new channels, the filling in of a sailing lagoon, and new willows and other vegetation planted.

Cold nights and a quieter pattern this week in South Lake Tahoe - but what happens over Thanksgiving?

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After a week with a recording setting low for the date (2 degrees), and a couple of feet of snow, what's coming will prove to be much milder. The cold conditions continue with an overall quieter pattern for the week ahead.

Longer range guidance still points toward a wetter pattern returning around Nov 21-23, leading into the Thanksgiving Holiday just as travelers hit the roads. The hints of an Atmospheric River will be answered soon.

Sierra-at-Tahoe announces first opening date since the Caldor Fire ripped through it

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - It has taken a large team of dedicated individuals with relentless dedication, working long hours over the last 441 days to bring Sierra-at-Tahoe back from the ruins created by the Caldor Fire to the anticipation of a new ski season.

The Sierra-at-Tahoe Ski Resort announced this weekend they will be ready for the 2022/23 season and reopening on December 3 (weather and Mother Nature permitting). The resort's 75th anniversary season was supposed to be last year, but with only being able to open for a day of celebration, the true party begins in just a few weeks.

South Tahoe High Boys Soccer team and coaches honored for 2022 season

South Tahoe High's 2022 boys' soccer program had an outstanding season. They had the best record since the team won the State title in 2010. This team had one of the league's best defenses which only allowed seven goals overall, eight goals counting conference games. Their offense scored 54 overall goals. In league play, they had five clean sheets, nine clean sheets counting conference games.

Community turns out for South Lake Tahoe Veterans Day ceremony

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A large crowd was at the American Legion Hall on Friday for the annual Veterans Day ceremony, one of the largest seen at the outdoor venue in South Lake Tahoe. Post Commander Tom Millham was master of ceremonies which had music from singers Davin Kangas and Jill Scharlow, and bagpiper Maria Delallo, speeches, a POW/MIA ceremony, and a Vietnam Veteran pinning from Daughters of the American Legion's local chapter.
