SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue is hosting a movie premier event at Lake Tahoe Community College on Friday, June 7 at 5:30 p.m. in the Duket Theatre.
The documentary Wilder than Wild was four years in the making and reveals how fire suppression and climate change have exposed our forests and wildland-urban landscapes to large, high-intensity wildfires - and explores strategies to mitigate the impact of these fires.
Following the movie will be a panel discussion with questions and answers on wildfire-related topics.

WWII Veteran John J. Cristando ~ March 16, 1926 - June 3, 2024
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/07/2024 - 11:42amA well-loved fixture in South Lake Tahoe for the last 58 years, John J. Cristando, sadly passed away on Monday, June 3 at the age of 98. A man who was very proud of being in the European Theater in World War II, John had originally planned on being in France for the 80th-anniversary ceremony of D-Day in Normandy after he was chosen to attend, but health kept him at Lake Tahoe.

Fondly known as $5 Dump Day, dispose of unwanted items for just $5 per carload. Residential loads only. Nevada residents are charged $10 per load as are pick-up trucks and trailers. UHauls and oversized trucks are priced by size.

Pioneer Trail understory burn scheduled for June 9-11
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/06/2024 - 8:31pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – In coordination with the Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT), the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU), is scheduled to conduct an understory prescribed fire on approximately 46 acres near South Lake Tahoe beginning Sunday, June 9, 2024, and continuing through Tuesday, June 11.
If conditions and weather are favorable, the burn will take place on the southeast side of Pioneer Trail between Susquehana Drive and Golden Bear Trail.

Judge Eddie T. Keller ~ June 6, 1941 - May 4, 2024

Keller died unexpectedly on May 4, 2024, he left behind volumes of memories and a treasure trove full of family, friends, and colleagues. A legend in legal circles, the former Assistant Presiding Judge Keller served in the courts on both the east and west slopes of El Dorado County and for years in the California Attorney General's Office.
Retired Judge Suzanne Kingsbury said Keller was a man of great integrity and intellect. She said, "He helped improve access to the court system and the delivery of justice."
Douglas School Board controversies: Joey Gilbert tweeting during meetings, a trustee criticized for using 'r' slur

Attendees of the meetings have pointed out that the board’s attorney, Joey Gilbert, spends time on his phone during the school board meetings during which he is paid $325 an hour.
Gilbert is a fan of the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, with hundreds of tweets and re-tweets on his profile each month.

I think perhaps my favorite farmers market find is heirloom tomatoes. These beauties are famous for their richness of flavor and unique taste.
Heirloom tomatoes are varietals that have been grown for at least 50 years without crossbreeding. They are open-pollinated, meaning that they are naturally pollinated by wind, bees, and other factors.

The Knight Monsters will play a 72-game regular season schedule (36 home, 36 away). The team will play a family-friendly home schedule comprised of ten Friday games, 11, Saturday games, six Sunday afternoon contests, four Wednesday games, and five Thursday games.

Falsely changing address to vote is fraudulent, and El Dorado County will investigate
Submitted by paula on Tue, 06/04/2024 - 10:34amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The proposed tax measure on the November ballot in South Lake Tahoe will directly affect people who do not live in the area as it proposes to tax second homeowners up to $6,000 per year if they live in the house less than six months.
The problem for many is the fact that they cannot vote on the vacancy tax that will affect them due to their voter registration being at their main residence.
Letters have been sent out to property owners in the city limits who don't live or vote in South Lake Tahoe to alert them of the Vacancy Tax citizen-led initiative.
Exploring nature's classroom: The annual children's Forest Field Trip at Tallac Historic Site

This educational event is presented by the South Tahoe Environmental Education Coalition (STEEC), a network of more than 26 agencies and organizations that provide environmental education programs for all grade levels in the South Lake Tahoe school system. Educators bring their passion for the region, teaching lessons on a variety of topics aligned with their expertise.

Since the bikes would be used by teenagers or older, no small youth-sized bikes are needed at this time.

Judge: Initiative to ban VHRs in Lake Tahoe area of Douglas County won't appear on November ballot
Submitted by paula on Mon, 06/03/2024 - 7:01pmDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - An effort to get an initiative on the November ballot to ban vacation home rentals (VHRs) in the Lake Tahoe area of Douglas County hit another roadblock, this one being a ruling by Judge William Maddox on Monday, June 3.
The judge upheld the Douglas County commissioners' finding that a petition to change the ordinance on vacation home rentals was insufficient. The petition had been circulated by a group of signatures but did not meet the required valid signatures.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The El Dorado Community Foundation his hosting "Philanthropy on Tap" at two locations his month, one on the west slope, and one in South Lake Tahoe.
These unique events will provide a “flight” of 35-40 nonprofit organizations serving El Dorado County. Each organization will have 60-90 seconds to provide its elevator speech describing its mission, programs, and greatest needs. These events are open to the community for free.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A team of Lake Tahoe's protectors, environmental partners from several agencies, will lead a free, public training on how to preserve the Lake’s blue waters from the threat of aquatic invasive species on Thursday, June 6. This training is being held as boating and paddling season kicks off and as part of California Invasive Species Action Week.

Voting opens to select design of new Douglas County Justice Center

In 1980, with a population of 19,400, the County relocated several County Departments to a newly constructed two-story Justice & Law Enforcement Center (JLEC) located at 1038 Buckeye Road in Minden.
Now, 40 years later and with a population of almost 50,000, the services provided in the building exceed the design capacity of the space, and a new building has been approved, also to be located on Buckeye Road.
Gas Line Replacement Project on State Route 28 resumes Sunday night

Southwest Gas and its contractor, Q&D Construction, continue work on a gas line replacement project on SR-28 between Tahoe City and Kings Beach.
- One-way traffic control is scheduled between Agate Road and Sahara Drive from Sunday, June 2 at 7 p.m. until Friday, June 7 at noon.

The South Tahoe Futbol Club U-12 boys dominated their bracket and posted a convincing 7-1 win in the championship against Elko Elite FC at the Wild West Shootout last weekend in Carson City.

At 11:15 a.m., officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to the hospital after a man arrived with multiple stab wounds.

wife and I are growing more and more concerned about the possible
effects of the proposed vacancy tax on full time residents if it is passed and implemented.
Our neighborhood, like many in the area, is a mix of full-time
residents and vacation homes. The vacation homeowners, most of them
long-time owners, are our neighbors like any other and are a part of
our little community. We enjoy them when they are here and when they
are not, our neighborhood is even more quiet and tranquil. We keep an
