On Thursday, January 25, 2024, UC Davis TERC (Tahoe Environmental Research Center) will be hosting a lecture about "How Tahoe's Future Climate Is Going to Change Its Many Watersheds" with Dr. Michael Dettinger. The in-person event will be held at Sunnyside Restaurant and Lodge in their Mountainside Bar.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Library is holding an after-school program for middle school and high school students. A.T.L.A.S. (At the Library After School) will be held every Wednesday from 2:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. and each week there is a different theme.

The first session for 6th - 12th graders begins on January 3, 2024.

The first Wednesday of every month is Crafternoon. For the January 3 session, they'll be making beaded jewelry.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Clean Up The Lake (CUTL) has announced the successful completion of its 2023 Lake Tahoe-based projects. In just three and a half years, CUTL has achieved a monumental milestone by removing more than 70,000 pounds of litter from lakes in the Sierra Nevada, including over 35,000 pounds directly from Lake Tahoe.

WASHOE COUNTY, Nev. - An investigation into animal welfare concerns that began on October 16 has led to the arrest of a Reno woman on two felony counts of willful/malicious torture, maiming or killing an animal, and two misdemeanor counts of failing to provide food/water/air for a confined animal.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect for the Sierra Nevada from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 p.m. Saturday, though at this time it does not look like a big storm for those at lake level. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno said snow accumulations of 2 to 6 inches above lake level, with up to 12 inches possible above the 7,500-foot level.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There may not be much snow this year at Lake Tahoe, but TubeTahoe has a solution and has been able to keep its runs full of snow with its snowmaking systems.

The crowds have been coming out to enjoy the daytime tubing, and now the business is adding Neon Night Tubing on some select dates.

Now people can enjoy neon lights, snow tubes, and laughter "that can be heard from space," says Tube Tahoe Co-founder Leon Abravanel.

Nevada’s nonrestricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $1,374,350,070 for November 2023, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board's monthly report released Thursday. This amounts to a 12.56 percent increase compared to the same month a year ago when licensees reported a gaming win of $1,220,945,367. For the fiscal year to date (since July), the gaming win has increased by 4.74 percent with $6,572,928,432 in "win".

The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) has expanded its free Route 50 service for the holiday weekend, December 30/31. The extra service is scheduled to help with New Year's Eve revealers and those attending the two-day Excision concert at the Tahoe Blue Event Center.

Buses will stop on US50 directly in front of the event center at the designated bus stop.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - What has become an annual situation since COVID, continues to be a dangerous issue on US50 and SR89 at Lake Tahoe. It has nothing to do with masks or social distancing but has everything to do with parking. Many people heading to Tahoe to find some sort of snow to play in have forgotten how to be safe and park safely along the roadways.

In just a few days over the Christmas holiday weekend, 111 parking tickets were issued by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) on US50 at Echo Summit and SR89 at Emerald Bay.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An identification has been made in the cold case investigation of a South Lake Tahoe woman who went missing in 1970.

It has been over 53 years since Donna Ann Lass was last seen alive while working at the then-Sahara Tahoe. Her disappearance was covered in a South Tahoe Now story marking the 50th anniversary of that date, September 6, 1970.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Lake Wind Advisory for Lake Tahoe from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday. They said to expect southwest winds of 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. Wave heights from 2 to 3 feet are expected, with the highest waves from mid-lake to the north and east shores.

Small boats, kayaks, and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Douglas County Commissioner Danny Tarkanian asked for a ban of vacation home rentals (VHRs) in all areas north of Cave Rock State Park on November 2, and in two meetings, the ban is now complete. The issuance of permits will end on December 31, 2024, after the passing of a new ordinance.

"Two-thirds of my proposal on VHRs has now passed," Tarkanian said in an emailed overview of the meeting. "The last part is reducing the number of VHR permits in each neighborhood based upon the analysis of VHR Program Manager, Ernie Strewlow."
