Op/Ed: South Lake Tahoe Library looks at ways to improve internet access

Event Date:
January 20, 2015 - 6:00pm

South Lake Tahoe Library has provided access to the Internet for many years. Once WiFi became available, with increasing numbers of people using their own devices to go online, demand on the library’s connection has grown to the point that service is now very slow.

Whether a library user is finding and applying for a job, researching information for work, school, or personal needs, or communicating with friends, the speed of the connection is crucial. It determines the number of devices that can be used, the ease of access to resources, and the ability to use a public computer to complete a task within the time limit of the library. The need for speed is likely to continue to increase as technology evolves.

South Lake Tahoe Friends of the Library is sponsoring a program on January 20 at 6 p.m. to take a close look at this need. To provide perspective, Heidi Hill Drum and Bev Ducey from Tahoe Prosperity Center will share that organization’s efforts to improve high speed Internet and cell phone service throughout our area. Branch Manager Katharine Miller will then discuss various options for improving Internet service at the library and possible means of funding. Members of the audience will be encouraged to ask questions and contribute ideas. Light refreshments will be served.
