Plunge into Lake Tahoe For a Good Cause
Submitted by Editor on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 1:12pm
Teams of super heroes, penguins, pirates and other characters jumped into Lake Tahoe last winter, and on March 17, they’ll do it again. You’re invited to join them as Special Olympics Northern California and Nevada co-host Polar Plunge® 2012 at Zephyr Cove, South Lake Tahoe. The event is open to all and will include entertainment, a costume contest, and prizes, as well as Special Olympics athletes, coaches, and volunteers who will share their experiences with the organization’s inspiring programs.
The Plunge® is a national event held across the U.S. and supported locally by many law enforcement officers, businesses, and individuals who are dedicated to helping our region’s athletes get the training, equipment, and other items needed to compete in the free, year-round programs. The 2012 event program also includes a Cool School Challenge and a North Shore plunge.
“The Lake Tahoe Polar Plunge® is the grand-daddy of all the plunges in this region,” said Maggie Schwarz, Regional Vice President of Special Olympics in Nevada. “Stick in your big toe or go ‘whole hog’…it’s fun for all, and plungers share a memorable experience with friends, family and co-workers while giving back. Think of it this way, the Special Olympics’ athletes demonstrate their bravery in everything they do, every day of their lives. All we need to do is be half that courageous by getting a little wet!”
Last year, more than 400 people from the Reno-Tahoe area plunged for Special Olympics at Zephyr Cove, including Joyce Whitney-Silva, who this year has formed a “Titanic” plunge team, comprised of her co-workers at Greater Nevada Credit Union.
“Our employees love it! It’s something they look forward to all year,” said Whitney-Silva, who is also a coach for Special Olympics. “This year our team expects to grow to 100 participants. We believe in Special Olympics and we are challenging other companies in the area to become involved. This event doesn’t just help Special Olympics; I guarantee that your employees and your business will be better because you joined together to make a difference.”
Registration for the Plunge® is open to the public, and participants raise funds by getting sponsors to support them. For more information on how you or your business can participate this year, please visit www.iPolarPlungeNV.com or call Joyce Whitney-Silva at 775-886-1329.
