Series of storms setting up to come into Lake Tahoe Basin

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Could the storm door be opening for the Lake Tahoe Basin? A series of weak to moderate winter storms will affect the area, each with widespread snow and wind impacts across the Sierra and western Nevada. This weekend's snowfall will be minimal at lake level.

They start off with a Wind Advisory in effect from 7:00 p.m. Friday to 4:00 p.m. Saturday with a break between midnight and 8:00 a.m. Winds will be from the south to southwest 20 to 30 mph with gusts 45 to 60 mph expected around the Lake Tahoe basin. Sierra ridges will experience gusting over 100 mph according to the National Weather Service. Large waves of 4-6 feet on Lake Tahoe, especially on the east and northeast sides.

Sunday Afternoon-Monday: More wind and another round of light snow showers. Wind impacts focused in mountains and along Highway 395. Light snow showers affecting Sierra passes.

Monday Evening-Tuesday: A lot of wind and heavier snow. Widespread wind impacts including potential for localized damage, power outages. A burst of heavy snow causing disruptions for Sierra travel. Possible brief snow for Tuesday morning commute in western Nevada cities but less certain.

Wednesday Evening-Thursday: A lot of snow and probably more wind. Strongest storm in the sequence and also colder leading to increased heavy snow and whiteout potential in the Sierra and northeast California. Strong wind impacts with a more prolonged period of snow for western Nevada cities. This scenario would be quite disruptive for travel and be the largest storm of the winter season thus far.
