Blizzard Warning now in effect as Atmospheric River brings feet of snow to the Sierra

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The warnings have been coming for over a week, and now the day weather experts have been warning us about is here. For snow that has been measured in inches so far this winter, a big change hits Lake Tahoe and the Sierra starting Tuesday night when it will be measured in feet.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has now upgraded the storm warnings to blizzard level.

High Wind Warning issued for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A High Wind Warning is in effect for the Lake Tahoe Basin from 10:00 p.m. Monday to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday. Expect winds 20-30 mph with gusts up to 65 mph expected, mainly above 6500 feet. Under that elevation, winds are expected 15-25 mph with gusts 30-45 mph.

Over the ridges, winds 60-80 mph are forecast with gusts exceeding 130 mph.

The winds will be coming from the east/northeast.

The warning is mainly for the western half of the Lake Tahoe Basin, Southern Lassen, Eastern Plumas, Eastern Sierra Counties, and northern Mono County west of Highway 395.

Winter Weather Advisory forecast for the Lake Tahoe Basin

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An incoming storm has been upgraded to a Winter Weather Advisory which is in effect for the Lake Tahoe Basin and Mono County from 4:00 a.m. Monday to 4:00 a.m. Tuesday. The rest of the storms forecast for the area have weakened though, with snowfall amounts greatly reduced.

A series of storms will affect the region starting Saturday night and going through next week. Overall potential impacts have trended lower that previously forecast, except for Monday which will feature strong winds and heavy mountain snows.

Approaching Lake Tahoe weather system not much of a snowmaker at lake level

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There hasn't been much precipitation over California and the Sierra since summer but approaching weather systems may change that.

A series of systems through the weekend will break down the persistent dry pattern, with the first bringing increased winds late Thursday afternoon into Thursday night with fire danger concerns for portions of Mono County. Rain and snow chances arrive Friday night and Saturday with a second round Sunday. Another period of gusty winds is looking likely for Sunday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Reno.

City of South Lake Tahoe asks tourists to stay safe and at home, for now

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With a minimum three-week long Stay-at-Home order going into effect on December 10 at 11:59 p.m. there are new rules that affect South Lake Tahoe visitors and residents.

The Sacramento Region, of which South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County are part of, has dropped below 15 percent availability in the ICUs across the region, prompting the new order. More than thirty million people in California now fall under the order after a deadly surge of the coronavirus has crossed the state.

Mono County and Southern California, San Joaquin regions prepare for stay-at-home orders

Mono County, home to Mammoth Mountain, Bridgeport, and Topaz Lake, is set to go on Stay-at-Home orders with the rest of the Southern California counties on Sunday. They will join the San Joaquin region as areas set to move to the stricter health orders due to a rapidly dwindling supply of ICU beds.

One fatality, 80 buildings destroyed in 20,879 acre Mountain View Fire near Walker

UPDATE 8:30PM: The Mono County Sheriff’s Office reports it has lifted the evacuation order for residents on the westside of U.S. Hwy 395 N. The evacuation order for east of U.S. Hwy 395 N from Eastside Lane to Cunningham Lane remains in effect. Approximately 400 residents are affected by evacuation orders. The order will be reassessed in 24 hours.

Mountain View Fire near Walker burns almost 21,000 acres; US395 remains closed

The Mountain View Fire near Walker, California has burned 20,879 acres according to the Mono County Sheriff's Office. There has been one fatality due to the fire which started Tuesday when a fallen powerline ignited dry brush. Winds drove the flames rapidly, finally stopping progress when rain started to fall overnight.

Fire operations report that damage assessments are underway and it could be days before its safe for residents to return. Evacuation orders are still in effect for Walker, Coleville and Topaz.

Three fires burning from Doyle to Walker; all fed by high winds

UPDATE 8:15PM: The Mountain View Fire is currently burning around the community of Walker. Due to the fast moving nature of the fire, an Evacuation Order has been issued for the Walker, Coleville and Topaz areas, and US 395 is still closed from Bridgeport to the Nevada state line. There is 0 percent containment and 5,000 acres burned according to Inci-web. Liberty Utilities has de-energized the communities of Walker and Coleville up to Topaz at the state line for safety precautions. Liberty is working with all emergency agencies and will safely restore power when possible.

Retired SLTPD K9 Tara dies after being honored with ceremony

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a special ceremony November 6, 2020, one that honored the police service of K9 Tara as she left her home for the last time. After surviving cancer surgery that resulted in the loss of one leg two years ago, K9 Tara was put to sleep after being hit by the disease once again.

Wind Advisory in place for Lake Tahoe as next system approaches

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Wind Advisory is in effect Friday, November 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. for the greater Lake Tahoe area, greater Reno-Carson City-Minden area, Mono County and Western Nevada Basin and range including Pyramid Lake.

Expect southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected. Wind prone areas such as; the Sierra foothills and portions of US-395 through the North Valleys, Washoe Valley, and Mono County can see gusts over 60 mph at times with Sierra ridges gusting over 100 mph.

Fire Weather Advisory issued for Lake Tahoe Thursday-Friday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Fire Weather Watch to be in effect for Lake Tahoe and Western Nevada for Thursday at 11:00 a.m. through Friday at 8:00 p.m.

Winds will be from the southwest on Thursday, shifting to west on Friday. Sustained winds 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph possible for both days. Strongest gusts Thursday could be US Highway 50 north and on Friday could be US Highway 50 south. Winds in valleys should weaken late Thursday evening, while Sierra ridges continue to gust in the 70-90 mph range overnight.

Red Flag Warning and Lake Wind Advisory in place for Lake Tahoe Tuesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has changed their previous Fire Weather Watch to a Red Flag Warning for Tuesday, September 8 from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

They have also issued a Special Weather Statement and a Lake Wind Advisory for Tuesday from 3:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

This warning is in place due to gusty winds and low humidity for the Lake Tahoe Basin, Western Lassen, Eastern Plumas, Eastern Sierrs, and Eastern Nevada Counites. Fire Zone 271 and Fire Zone 272.

Heat advisory in effect all weekend for Lake Tahoe communities

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It is going to be a hot one in Lake Tahoe over the Labor Day Weekend as well as in Western Nevada and Northern California.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Heat Advisory from 11:00 a.m. Friday to 8:00 p.m. Sundayfor Lake Tahoe due to consecutive days of high temperature. The forecast highs are 90-93 degrees those three days and record high temperatures are likely this holiday weekend.

Not only will there be high temperatures, there will also be widespread haze due to Northern California fires.

Red Flag Warning for Lake Tahoe starts Sunday night

8:30 p.m. UPDATE: The Fire Weather Watch has been upgraded to a Red Flag Warning. The warning is from 8:00 p.m. Sunday to 11:00 a.m. Monday. Expect thunderstorms and strong outflow wind guest 40 to 50 mph.

Mammoth Lakes added to state's monitoring list; Truckee/North Lake Tahoe ask visitors to stay away on weekends

To help stop the spread of the coronavirus, California Governor Gavin Newsom has added more counties to his "watch list," those showing concerning trends in rates of COVID-19. This list now numbers 37 which makes up 93 percent of the state's population. There are 58 counties in the state.

New on that list are Mono County (home to Mammoth Mountain) and Santa Cruz County, a popular tourist destination. North Lake Tahoe is in Placer County which was added to the list earlier this month.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The forecast snow is here, with 2-3 feet reported at the upper elevations. The snow is affecting lower elevations as well, with chain controls starting to the west at Apple Hill.

If on the roads, check conditions often and go slow as there is snow and ice on the roads and a lot of traffic. There is another 21" of snow forecast for Sunday at lake level.

Lake Tahoe clearing out after quick snowstorm, clear holiday weekend ahead

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Storms for the winter of 2019/20 haven't been prolific, but this week's one-day storm left behind up to two feet of snow at Lake Tahoe ski resorts and about a foot around South Lake Tahoe.

Chain controls remain on mountain roads Friday morning but expect them to be dropping as the forecast calls for partly sunny skies and a high of 35. Saturday and Sunday will be partly to mostly sunny and in the mid-40s.

Chance of a White Christmas in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Temperatures will be below average for the rest of the year as the second part of the storm that brought snow Sunday makes its way into the Lake Tahoe Basin to start off the week.

Snow looks to continue for Monday spreading into western Nevada and impacting holiday travel. After a brief break overnight Sunday, precipitation is expected to
increase in intensity once again for Mono County and the Tahoe Basin early Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Winter Weather Advisory issued for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the Lake Tahoe Basin from Friday, December 13 at 4:00 p.m. to Saturday, December 14 at 10:00 a.m.

A series of systems will bring additional rain and snow to the region through Sunday, starting with a relatively warm system Thursday into Friday morning. It will bring gusty winds to western Nevada with rain and very high elevation snow for the Sierra and portions of northeast California, according to the National Weather Service.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - U.S. Highway 50 reopened to eastbound and westbound traffic this morning about 5:00 a.m. with R-2 chain controls still in effect from Point View (just above Placerville) to Meyers.

Expect extra vehicles on the roads in South Lake Tahoe as US50 is the only main artery over the Sierra that is open at this hour.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - We could see the coldest air of the season this next week after the storms leave the Lake Tahoe Basin on Tuesday, but in the meantime, it's snow, snow, snow.

Major storm headed for Lake Tahoe; Mountain travel discouraged

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a Winter Storm Warning in place for Lake Tahoe, one that starts on Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. and lasts until Monday night at 10:00 p.m. as two major storms take aim for Lake Tahoe.

The incoming storms have prompted travel officials to warn travelers to get to Lake Tahoe by 4:00 p.m. Friday night and to stay off mountain roads from then until early Monday morning.

The warnings are calling for heavy snow at lake level anywhere from 19" to 33" and up to five feet of snow above 7000 feet over the four-day period.

Stronger storm forecast to hit Lake Tahoe Wednesday night

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A winter storm warning is in effect starting at 10:00 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28 and lasting until 4:00 a.m. Friday, Nov.30. Heavy snow is expected, prompting officials to upgrade the storm from a "watch" to a "warning."

Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches below 7000 feet are expected with 3-6 inches at lake level and 1-3 feet above 7000 feet with higher amounts along the Sierra crest according to the National Weather Service. It will be windy as well with gusts as high as 60 mph over higher terrain.

Thanksgiving travel could be impacted as storms head to Lake Tahoe

Coming to Lake Tahoe for Thanksgiving? Try to get here early Wednesday.

Holiday travel impacts are likely across the Sierra and western Nevada starting on Wednesday. It is best to have a winter travel kit and plan for potentially
long delays through Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, the biggest chance for snow is Wednesday, though not overly impressive for Sierra standards.

Sunny and 80s to start the week in South Lake Tahoe

The weather has been beautiful in South Lake Tahoe over the Labor Day Weekend and more of the same is expected in the coming week.

Slight winds with mostly clear skies will prevail this week in South Lake Tahoe. There will be a couple of weak disturbances Monday and Tuesday, giving a chance for cumulus buildups over the mountains and possibly a stray afternoon thunderstorm over the southern Sierra around Mono County.

Ron Cohen named CEO/President of Squaw Valley | Alpine Meadows

Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows and Alterra Mountain Company announced today that Ron Cohen has been selected as President and Chief Operating Officer of Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows. Cohen has served as the interim President & Chief Operating Officer at the resort since April, 2018, and will move into the permanent position effective immediately.

Forecast: Haze and 80s in the seven-day forecast for South Lake Tahoe

Smoke from California fires have plagued the Lake Tahoe Basin for a few weeks, and there is no relief in sight. Afternoon winds stoked the Donnell Fire Wednesday, pushing a large plume of smoke into the atmosphere and sending it right to Lake Tahoe and the Reno/Carson Valley area.

South Lake Tahoe had a warm July; Week of 80s ahead

When looking back at the month of July, each day's high temperatures in South Lake Tahoe were above average except for one, which was equal to the high. Even though July was a warm month, no record highs were set.

After such a warm month, August is starting out much the same.
