No candidate for District 1 Senate received more than 50 percent of the vote on Tuesday, forcing a runoff election in June between the two candidates with the most votes.
After 100 percent of the precincts were counted, the top two are Republican Assemblyman Brian Dahle and Republican Assemblyman Kevin Kiley. It is unknown how many provisional and mail-in ballots remain to be counted.
A Republican has held this seat for 40 years. The district covers a large area of northeastern California from the Oregon border to South Lake Tahoe including parts of Sacramento. The seat was vacated by Ted Gaines after he won a seat on the California State Board of Equalization in November.
The vote count as of Wednesday morning:
Republican Assemblyman Brian Dahle of Bieber - 28.7 percent
Republican Assemblyman Kevin Kiley of Rocklin - 28.5 percent
Democrat Silke Pflueger of Truckee - 25.8 percent
Republican Rex Hime of Loomis - 9.1 percent
Republican Theodore Dziuba of Placerville - 2.1 percent
The other candidate who initially ran for the office, Steve Baird, pulled out in February. He received 5.8 percent of the vote.
Dahle's campaign sent out a mailer that told people voting Republican to vote for him, and those voting Democrat to vote for Baird, thus pulling votes from the top Democrat candidate Pflueger.
