Lake Tahoe Historical Society Fireside Chat: Stewart Indian School

Event Date:
April 10, 2018 - 7:00pm

Have you noticed the sign as you enter Carson City, a sign with an arrow stating "Stewart Indian School"?

If you've been curious and never turned to see what its all about, be curious no longer.

The Lake Tahoe Historical Society (LTHS), celebrating 50 years in South Lake Tahoe, will hold their monthly Fireside Chat on this topic on Tuesday, April 10 at 7:00 p.m. in the Camp Richardson Hotel lobby.

The Stewart Indian School was established in 1890, and was one of the first of hundreds of Indian boarding schools that popped up across the west to introduce them into mainstream culture. The school was open for 90 years and over 30,000 children were educated behind its stone walls.

Sherry Rupert, the Executive Director of the State of Nevada Indian Commission, will be speaking at the Fireside Chat. The University of Nevada graduate was the first American Indian woman to be appointed to Governor Sandoval's cabinet.

The cost for all Fireside Chats is $3 for the public and free to LTHS members. Annual memberships start at $5 for children, $20 for seniors, $25 for adults and $40 for families. Lifetime and business memberships are also available.
