Celebrate Earth Day by picking up trash in your neighborhood

Wednesday is Earth Day, the 50th anniversary of a day celebrated around the world to demonstrate support for environmental protection.

With the cancelation of the annual local Earth Day celebration organizers have created Earth Week, with daily activities and lessons everyone can do to celebrate the earth.

Wednesday's focus is "Waste Not."

While there is no organized trash pick up in South Lake Tahoe, people are encouraged to walk in their neighborhood and pick up trash. Now that the snow has melted in most areas, trash has been uncovered. With many beaches closed due to the coronavirus, and "stay at home" orders in place, it is easiest to grab a trash bag when getting outside in your area.

One local resident, Jon Julian, said he'll be working the Ski Run Boulevard area starting at 11:00 a.m. by starting in the Red Hut parking lot if anyone wants to join him (with social distancing guidelines in place). Jon said he'll have some extra gloves and bags if needed, and he'll be the one on the bike with a trailer. He said even if not joining him, he is encouraging others to pick an area near them and do the same.

Besides trash pickup, people can participate by learning how much trash they generate daily inside the home and figure out a plan on using less packaging and using the South Tahoe Refuse Blue recycle bags when packaging cannot be avoided.
