STHS junior commits to play football at Cal Berkeley

South Tahoe High's standout tight end McCallan Castles has committed to going to UC Berkeley, and he's just a junior.

Castles received dozens of offers from other top schools during the year but after a visit to Berkeley on Saturday he decided to become a Bear in the fall of 2018. He had been recruited from Utah, Colorado State, University of Colorado, Boise State, Oregon State, Arizona State, San Diego State, Washington State, Duke and many others. He told South Tahoe Now recently that he wanted to stay on the west coast and he got his wish.

"After discussing with my family and coaches, I decided that I will forgo my earlier plans," announced Castles on Twitter. "With that said I would like to announce that I will continue my academic and football career at University of California Berkeley #GoBears."

The STHS student has a 3.5 grade point average, and the 6'5" junior has exercised his way from 215 pounds to 220 pounds, and Cal thinks his wide, lengthy frame can carry another 20-30 pounds. Castles led the Vikings with 1,193 receiving yards, 65 catches and 15 touchdowns last season.

"Cal adds its first offensive skill player of the 2018 class in athletic, sure-handed tight end McCallan Castles," announced Ryan Gorcey on Cal's www.scout.com.
