Over 20,000 pounds of food distributed at Food Bank event in South Lake Tahoe

The El Dorado County Food Bank was in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday, delivering both food from their mobile pantry and fresh produce from California Emergency Food Link.

A line of people had formed at the American Legion prior to their opening at 10 p.m. Volunteers from St Theresa’s Bread and Broth came out to help and, for the first time, U-Turn 4 Christ from Pollock Pines joined the collective outreach as volunteers to help others.

Well over 100 families came and received oranges, apples, lettuce, potatoes, onions, watermelons, strawberries, the good stuff that is expensive in the grocery store that seniors and families living on a fixed income cannot afford at times.

On top of the Mobile Pantry and the Produce distribution another Food Bank Truck stocked the shelves of South Lake Tahoe Charities, Family Resource Center, Bread and Broth, Senior Plaza, Kelly Ridge and Page & Sage Back Pack Program serving SLT schools. The South Lake Tahoe Boys and Girls Club picked up produce to take back to the club to assist families that couldn’t make the Mobile Pantry Distribution.

On the way out of town the crew also stocked the shelves of a local Gold Star Mom who was having a tough time making ends meet.

The contribution to the at risk community in South Lake Tahoe had a whole sale value of around $34,000.

The mobile pantry will be back in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, June 24 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the American Legion.
