Community Meeting to Improve Broadband Service

Event Date:
June 24, 2013 - 6:45pm

Does your business or home have inadequate Internet service? Or maybe you don't have Internet service at all.
The Gold Country Broadband Consortium is working to provide choices for affordable Internet service throughout a four-county region, including the California side of the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The Consortium is hosting a meeting on Monday, June 24, to hear residents' and business' concerns about Internet service in the South Lake Tahoe and Meyers areas. The meeting will be from 6:45 to 8 p.m. at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Complex, 1180 Rufus Allen Blvd. (Aspen Room).

Internet service providers will be on hand to listen to comments and potentially offer solutions.

If you have concerns about your Internet service but can't make it to the meeting - or if you'd like to send your comments in advance - email them to info@tahoebusinessmonitor.com or russ@sedcorp.biz.

The Gold Country Broadband Consortium (GCBC) is one of 14 regional consortia in the State funded by the California Advanced Services Fund Rural and Urban Regional Broadband Consortia grant program to leverage regional, state and national resources as an investment in improving and expanding broadband access.

Their efforts are being facilitated by the Sierra Economic Development Corp., or SEDCorp.

The Consortium is also conducting a mapping project to determine what Internet speeds are available at different locations. Businesses and residents are asked to take an Internet "speed test" and submit the results, along with their physical address, to russ@sedcorp.biz.

To conduct the speed test, visit the FCC site www.speedtest.net. This website is used to record the results of all speed tests and reported to the CPUC. The goal is to get service to those who don't have it and to upgrade service that doesn't meet the state standard of 6 mbps down and 1.5 mbps up.
