Through grants from the FAA and Caltrans, the Lake Tahoe Airport is currently undergoing the third of five phases of ramp modifications due to accommodate changing aircraft lengths and weights.
The apron that is currently being revamped hasn't been upgraded since 1984.
More business jets and other large business aircraft are landing at the Lake Tahoe Airport, many of what are scene during the annual American Century Golf Championship.
The apron which is currently under construction was originally designed for lighter aircraft. During the busy season the entire apron at Lake Tahoe Airport is occupied with aircraft parked on all sections of the apron, resulting in the need for upgrades.
Funding for this project is from a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grant in the amount of nearly $1.4 million dollars for the Reconstruction of the General Aviation Ramp Phase 3. Another $50,000 was received from a Caltrans grant. The Ramp Phase 3 construction is due to be completed by the end of September 2016 with the complete project concluding within two years.
