Edward Joseph McCarthy 1921 - 2014

We just wanted to let those that knew our father, Edward Joseph McCarthy, that our father passed away at 10:25pm Thursday night, October 2, 2014, in his Lake Tahoe home at the age of 93. He was surrounded by family members as he slipped away from us.

Our father was born to Edward Aloyious McCarthy and Bertha McCarthy on September 4, 1921 in San Francisco and was also raised in San Francisco, CA. He really loved roller skating all over San Francisco, including skating backwards down those crazy steep hills with his hands in his pockets. He could only dance with roller skates under his feet.....

Our father was in the United States Navy - Seabees/Machinist for 3 years. He was mostly stationed in the tiny islands of the South Pacific where he helped make landing strips for our soldiers to refuel and rest up to go back and fight. He received gun fire, but luckily was not injured. He received an honorable discharge in late 1945, and married our mother, Vivian McCarthy in 1945. Our father worked at an Associated Oil Gas Station, and eventually purchased it. Always a hard worker was he.....

In 1950, our father and mother moved us to Pleasant Hill, CA where both of us were raised. Though our parents divorced in 1965, our parents have remained extremely close family all these many years later. Both our parents always said the other had very high ethics and integrity. How lucky are we to have both parents of such high morals..... Our mother also lives in South Lake Tahoe and is 93 years young....

During our years in the Bay Area, our father worked in the car dealership business, and was the Owner of his own Hudson Agency in Walnut Creek, CA, the Sales Manager of Fidelity Oldsmobile in Berkeley, CA, and the General Manager of Lloyd A. Wise Chevrolet in Oakland, CA.

His two favorite places on earth were San Francisco and Lake Tahoe, so in 1966 our father moved to South Lake Tahoe to start a new career in real estate. He was the sole owner of Sierra-Nevada Realty, Inc. for many years selling homes, commercial properties, and motel/hotels.

In 1980, he and his partner, Merrill Higham, turned two properties they owned into timeshare resorts; the Stardust Lodge and the Americana Village.

Because our father cared so much about the future of Lake Tahoe, he was extremely active in so many things here. Just to name a few, he served on several Boards, including the South Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce, South Lake Tahoe Board of Realtors, was a past President of the South Lake Tahoe Lodging Association, and a past Director of the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority.

Even up until the very end, our father was in good spirits, and continued to make us all laugh with his sparkling and twinkling personality. He was a very classy person, always taking the high road in whatever he did. He was so compassionate, inspirational, kind, generous, and he still believed your word was your bond, and a hand shake should be honored.

Our family asks that in place of flowers you might please donate to the Wounded Warrior Project at PO BOX 758517, Topeka, KS 66675 or see their donation page at

He will be so truly and profoundly missed.....
