High Wind Warning for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A High Wind Warning for the Lake Tahoe and Western Nevada area has been extended through 1:00 a.m. Saturday.

Southwest winds are expected to be 25-35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Wind prone areas such as the Sierra foothills and portions of US-395 through the North Valleys and Washoe Valley can see gusts to 75 mph at times. Sierra ridges will gust well over 100 mph.

This warning is for the Greater Lake Tahoe Area and Greater Reno-Carson City-Minden Area.

Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Rough lake conditions for Lake Tahoe with wave heights 2 to 5 feet, highest waves expected on the north-northeast shores.

Winds will be strong enough to cause blowing snow for higher Sierra elevations, reducing visibility and creating hazardous travel conditions for the higher Sierra passes (I-80 and Carson Pass) tonight into early Saturday morning.

NWS Reno weekend forecast for South Lake Tahoe:

Friday - Snow likely before 4pm, then rain and snow. High near 40. Windy, with a southwest wind 25 to 30 mph, with gusts as high as 50 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Tonight - Rain and snow before 1am, then a chance of snow. Snow level 7100 feet lowering to 6300 feet after midnight . Low around 28. Windy, with a southwest wind 25 to 30 mph decreasing to 15 to 20 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 50 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Saturday - Mostly sunny, with a high near 41. Southwest wind around 10 mph.

Saturday Night -Partly cloudy, with a low around 32. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph.

Sunday - Mostly sunny, with a high near 46. West wind around 5 mph.
