The new year brings new laws in California

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There are new laws in California in 2019 that will affect those on the road, bike paths, eating at restaurants, paying bail and receiving minimum wage. In 2018, 1,217 bills made it to Governor Brown's desk and he signed 1,016 of them which are now new laws.

Heavy traffic on I80 with chain controls; US50 to South Lake Tahoe much easier drive

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - `With holiday travelers and a Winter Weather Advisory both headed to Lake Tahoe, expect delays on the roads.

On I80 near Donner Lake westbound traffic is at a dead stop as drivers head towards chain controls and snow. As of 11:00 a.m. Monday the controls are in place from Kingvale to the Donner Lake interchange with those expected to expand as the storm enters the region.

Community invited to provide input on Mental Health Services Act annual update

The El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, Behavioral Health Division invites the public to provide input on the Fiscal Year 2019-20 Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) Annual Update. Community members can provide input by attending an upcoming community meeting or by submitting an online survey or an email.

Community meetings to receive input for the MHSA Annual Update are scheduled as follows:
• Tuesday, January 8, 2019, at 1:00 p.m. at the Placerville Library, 345 Fair Lane in Placerville

Holiday hours for City of South Lake Tahoe offices

All City of South Lake Tahoe offices will operate under the following holiday schedule:

December 24 - City offces are closed. Recreation Center and pool close at 1:30 p.m.
December 25 - All are closed
December 26 - Normal business hours. Pool is open 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and there is no H2O class.
December 31 - Normal business hours. Recreation Center and pool close at 1:30 p.m.
January 1, 2019 - All are closed.

Early morning earthquakes near Carson City

Did you feel them? There were two earthquakes in the southeast end of Carson City Thursday morning.

At 5:24 a.m. on December 20 a 3.6 earthquake hit in the area four miles to the SSE of downtown, almost 10 miles northeast of Genoa. Then, at 5:30 a.m., another one measuring 3.1 occurred in the same area.

As shown in the picture this same area has had a lot of seismic activity in the last two weeks. Eastern California and Northern Nevada experience thousands of earthquakes annually so Thursday's earthquakes aren't unusual, just larger than normal.

Lawsuit filed against City of South Lake Tahoe to stop enforcement of Measure T

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It has been just two weeks since the final count of the November 2018 election was certified in El Dorado County and there is already a lawsuit surrounding the outcome of Measure T.

Stephen Bannar ~ 3/18/63 - 12/13/18

On Thursday, December 13, 2018, Stephen Bannar, loving husband and father of Brandon and Allison, passed away at the age of 55. Stephen was born in Camden, New Jersey on March 18, 1963. He graduated from Rutgers University in 1985 and completed his Medical Degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1990. Stephen practiced Orthopedic Surgery for 25 years. On May 18, 1991, he married Barbara Lee Storck. They raised two children Brandon and Allison.

Lake Tahoe Boys and Girls Club helping out Sierra House families

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One hundred percent of the operations of Sierra House Elementary have now moved over to the Al Tahoe school site (where the Lake Tahoe Boys and Girls Club is also housed) until possibly mid-February. Due to the size a split schedule is in place to accommodate the students, with some students only attending in the morning, others only in the afternoon.

The Boys and Girls Club (Club) is assisting parents with that split schedule and in partnership with Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) will be offering free programs and activities during the school day.

Snow, rain and sunshine in the South Lake Tahoe forecast

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A quiet day today will be followed by a system coming to the area Sunday through early Monday. This system will have a more southerly track and bring a round of light snow to the Sierra and a few showers into western Nevada. Generally quiet and dry weather is expected to persist for some time after Monday according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

South Lake Tahoe apartments found to be unsafe - tenants must vacate

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Six families in South Lake Tahoe don't know where they will be spending Christmas after receiving notice Wednesday that the apartment building they've been calling home was found to be unsafe, giving them until Monday, December 17 to find a place to live.

Sierra House students could have split schedule at Al Tahoe until mid-February

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The third graders from Sierra House Elementary are now at the Al Tahoe school site, and on Monday, December 17, the rest of the students will join them. At first it was believed that work could possibly be completed by the time students return to school after the holiday break but now that the hired restoration specialists are getting into the walls and ceiling the scope of work has increased.

Belfor cannot commit to the scope of work until the crews get into their job, so the plan is to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. As of today, the

Grizzlies host weekend of hockey in South Lake Tahoe

The South Tahoe Amateur Hockey Association (STAHA) Grizzlies are hosting a weekend of hockey December 15-16 at the Lake Tahoe Ice Arena for their U10, U12 and U14 teams. Opponents include the San Jose Sharks junior team, the Cupertino Cougars and Santa Clara Blackhawks.

The Grizzlies are a youth developmental travel ice hockey program who participate in the Norcal Youth Hockey League. Their 14B team is undefeated and is bringing their 10-0-1 record into the weekend's play.

South Lake Tahoe City Council adds monthly evening meetings

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The new city council voted unanimously during their December 11 meeting to add nightly meetings to their calendar during the year to make it easier for residents who work during the day to make it to a meeting.

“Council understands that everyone can’t make it to a morning meeting,” said South Lake Tahoe City Manager Frank Rush. “Council has made this change in an effort to make the city more open, more accessible and more transparent, and encourages our citizens to participate in City government.”

Train to be volunteer at Tahoe Warm Room

The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless will host a volunteer training on Friday, December 14 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the new Warm Room space located at 1201 Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe.

Volunteers who work in the Warm Room during operations are required to attend a training session and participate in a basic background check. The training covers vision and mission, roles and responsibilities, and Warm Room rules and procedures.

Past volunteers are welcome to attend to see the space and get a refresher course.

Some Sierra House students will move to Al Tahoe this week; rest head over Dec. 17

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is now a new plan for students at Sierra House Elementary School, one that will require some to move over to the Al Tahoe site sooner than expected.

Cannabis ordinance may be in place in South Lake Tahoe by March 2019

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The new city council had to tackle the big issue of a cannabis ordinance during their first meeting together on Tuesday, an issue that had been before the previous council numerous times. Two versions of an ordinance were presented but neither passed muster in the eyes of the council and they hope to have one that addresses their issues come before them at their January 15, 2019 meeting.

Tips for a safe winter and holiday season

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Winter has arrived in the Lake Tahoe Basin along with the holiday season. Local fire districts and their partners would like to take this opportunity to remind residents and visitors to properly dispose of fireplace/woodstove ashes and to use caution when decorating for the holiday. The following safety tips are recommended by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to help keep your home safe this winter/holiday season.

Zachary "Zachy" Andrew Harris ~ 7/1/00 - 12/3/18

On Monday, December 3rd, Zachary (Zachy) Andrew Harris passed away from injuries sustained in a car accident in San Luis Obispo, California. He was born in South Lake Tahoe, California on July 1, 2000. Zachy graduated from South Tahoe High School in June 2018 and attended Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo.

Road Beat: Toyota Sienna, Stellar Performance

Minivans are not supposed to be hot rods or even quick. They are for hauling the family with comfortable seven to eight passenger seating (there isn’t a bad seat in this house) while still having massive cargo capacity. Or they are for going to your local Home Depot or Lowe’s and God help your credit card. I was actually able to put 12-foot-long baseboard inside this massive shipping container.

Fund set up for South Lake Tahoe family who lost son in San Luis Obispo crash

It was a tragedy no parent, brother, relative or friend should have to go through. Just after 3:00 p.m. on Monday, December 3, 2018, 18-year-old Zachary Harris died at the scene of a vehicle crash on Highway 1 between Cuesta College and San Luis Obispo. His car struck a large tree off the highway.

Zachary, a 2018 graduate of South Tahoe High is the son of Marjorie and Duane Harris and brother of Tyler and Brandon. He was a freshman at Cuesta College.

Special City Council meeting Monday; Big agenda for Tuesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be a special City Council meeting on Monday, December 10 at 5:00 p.m.

The councilmembers will officially accept the November 6 election results. Per Elections Code the City Clerk must certify the results of the election to the City Council.

For South Lake Tahoe this means certifying the fact that three councilmembers, Cody Bass, Devin Middlebrook, and Tamara Wallace, won the election along with Sue Blankenship as city clerk, Dave Olivo as city treasurer, and Measure T passed.

Home Ranch for the Holidays at Dangberg Historic Park

Home Ranch for the Holidays, a celebration of the season that includes a vintage toy exhibit, music and treats, returns to Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday-Sunday, December 15-16 from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

The exhibit includes toys from the 1870s through the 1890s that were played with by Fred Dangberg and his siblings, as well as numerous toys enjoyed by Fred’s five children and a grandson from 1901 through the 1940s.

Fire update: Sierra House Elementary to relocate all grades Dec. 17-21

After further evaluation on their school restoration and cleaning plan, Belfor has asked Sierra House Elementary to be vacant starting the week of December 17.

This access with no students or staff present will facilitate clean up and reconstruction so that the job can be completed thoroughly and with integrity by the time school resumes after the Christmas break.

In order to accommodate Belfor, Sierra House Principal Karin Holmes has let those affected they will be moving all of students and staff to Al Tahoe Elementary School (the Lake Tahoe Boy's and Girl's Club site).

South Lake Tahoe teen killed in San Luis Obispo crash

A South Tahoe High graduate has been identified as the victim in a single car crash on Highway 1 just after 3:00 p.m. Monday, December 3, 2018.

According to a press release from the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff-Coroner, the sole occupant of the vehicle was 18-year-old Zachary Andrew Harris of South Lake Tahoe.

Sheriff's deputies and officers from the California Highway Patrol responded to a single vehicle versus tree collision at Highway 1 and Stenner Creek Road, in-between Cuesta College and San Luis Obispo.

He was declared dead at the scene.
