MTV acquires SnowGlobe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It started as a dream of Chad Donnelly's after growing up in Colorado and attending Denver Broncos football games in the cold and snow. He thought to himself, if people will attend a football game and sit in the snow, why not a concert?

That observation turned into an internationally recognized event in South Lake Tahoe where electronic music fans have headed to for three days, December 29-31, since 2011. In that first year, 28,995 tickets were over the three days and it grossed $1.5 million.

Veterans to be honored at South Lake Tahoe ceremony

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - At the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, veterans both living and dead will be honored at a public Veterans Day ceremony hosted by the American Legion Post 795 and the American Legion Auxiliary.

No on Measure T closes the gap - down by 25 votes as of Friday

The gap between the yes and no votes on Measure T in South Lake Tahoe got much smaller, with the measure now passing by just 25 votes. The South Lake Tahoe City Council and El Dorado County Supervisor results remain the same.

El Dorado County had over 24,000 votes to count after election day, and they have now counted 16,919 of them. 1,655 of those were from the City of South Lake Tahoe and 2,907 for the Area 5 Supervisor district.

NDOT to close stretch of I-580/US 395 for utility work

There will be a full closure of Interstate 580 in northern Carson City and Washoe Valley during the morning hours of both Nov. 17 and Nov. 18, NV Energy and Nevada Department of Transportation announced Friday.

Public invited to hockey games in South Lake Tahoe

The Tahoe Prep Hockey Academy Varsity team has been competing across the country and they bring the action back to their home ice on Saturday at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena.

Coming off a 7-0 win over Los Gatos at the Solar4Amerian Ice in San Jose on Tuesday, the Tahoe team hosts St. Mary's Preparatory High School Rams on Saturday, November 10 at 1:00 p.m. This game is part of the team's competition in the Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League.

American Century and LTVA award almost $79k to South Shore nonprofits

Twenty-six local nonprofits were awarded $78,974 Thursday in donations from the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and American Century Championship thanks to funds raised during the 2018 celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe.

“The continued support from our partners American Century Investments and NBC Sports means so much to this community,” said Carol Chaplin, president and CEO of the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority. “These contributions benefit so many in the South Shore a long time after the tournament ends.”

Douglas County VHR survey results released: Topic on next board meeting agenda

Over 1,000 Douglas County residents responded to an online survey regarding vacation home rentals (VHR) and those results are now available. The input on the surveys is equal to approximately 50 hours of public comment.

SLTPD and DCSO go undercover to investigate Lake Tahoe and Carson Valley drug trafficking

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) and Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) Street Enforcement Team have conducted a joint investigation over the last nine months into the trafficking and sales of heroin and methamphetamine in the area.

Update - 1:20 a.m. 11/7/18: With a large voter turnout the processing of ballots is taking longer than normal. A power outage caused by a car hitting a power line near Blackwood Avenue caused some excitement for voters but did not delay the count as there are procedures in place for such an incident.

South Tahoe High girls soccer team headed to state playoffs

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe High girls varsity soccer team took care of their opponents all season long and look for more of the same this weekend as they head to the 2018 NIAA 3A State Girls Soccer playoffs.

Sporting an overall 23-2 record and a league record of 17-1, the Vikings beat Truckee 2-1 Saturday in the 3A Northern Championship to take their #1 seed from the north down to Las Vegas.

Winterfest concert at Valhalla Boathouse features Oakland Jazz Choir

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The annual Valhalla Winterfest and Holiday Faire returns to the South Shore November 16-18 with shopping Friday through Sunday and a special Saturday concert in the historic Boathouse Theater.

The Winterfest concert with the Oakland Jazz Choir will be on November 17 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and will feature holiday music and other popular selections.

Voter turnout expected to be high in El Dorado County

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - From 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., local voters will be casting their decisions for the future of South Lake Tahoe government, El Dorado County government, cannabis, vacation rentals and state and federal issues and candidates.

A historic number of voters are expected both nationally and locally. During the last California gubernatorial election in 2014 voter turnout was at a record low, but the opposite is expected in 2018.

Donations needed for Bread & Broth Thanksgiving Dinner

The 29th annual community Bread & Broth Thanksgiving Dinner will be held on Monday, November 19 inside Grace Hall at St. Theresa Catholic Church from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The meal is open to all members of the community just as it has been every Monday at Grace Hall since 1989.

Last year 300 pounds of turkey, 100 pounds of stuffing, 50 pies, 50 pounds of carrots, 90 pounds of green beans and bags of sweet potatoes were cooked for about 300 members of the community.

Overwhelming support of South Shore Community Revitalization Project at TRPA meeting

STATELINE, Nev. - A standing room only crowd was in the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) board room on October 25, 2018 for an updated presentation, and plans for the next steps, of the U.S. 50 South Shore Community Revitalization Project, commonly known as the Loop Road. It reroutes Highway 50 from its current location in front of Heavenly Village and the casinos to behind Raley's, the Village Center and Harrahs Tahoe.

Prescribed burns around Lake Tahoe as weather permits

California State Parks, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and the U.S. Forest Service will continue prescribed fire operations over the next several weeks in multiple locations around Lake Tahoe. Operations may take place near Glenbrook on the East Shore; near Heavenly Mountain Resort’s Boulder and California lodges, near Twin Peaks and in Baldwin Meadow on the South Shore; in D.L. Bliss and Burton Creek state parks and near Rubicon Estates on the West Shore; and on urban lots in Kings Beach on the North Shore.

Armed robbery suspect identified as man killed after shooting at police

11/1/18 update: More details have come to light surrounding the officer involved shooting of an armed robbery suspect in Meyers on Monday.

There were three warrants for the arrest of Billy Jo Johnson on Monday, one from each South Lake Tahoe, Douglas County and Carson City. Law enforcement from each agency were working together on their cases in an attempt to locate and arrest the 34-year-old Johnson.

Nevada Gaming Control Board: South Shore casino revenue drops in September

Gaming revenue for the State of Nevada during the month of September 2018 showed a slight increase over the previous year, posting a gain of 1.26 percent with a "win" of $991,222,034 for casinos in the state, according to figures released by the Nevada Gaming Control Board today.

The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

Our community has less than one week before November 6th, election day, arrives. There are many important issues on the ballot. South Tahoe Now: No on Measure T

Election season can be an exciting time of year with anticipation of the possibilities, but this year in South Lake Tahoe election season is full of negativity that has pitted neighbor against neighbor. One year ago I wrote an editorial "Use the election to create a community of collaboration and teamwork," and today I urge continuance of community, collaboration and teamwork.

Lane closures over on Kingsbury Grade, NDOT project nearing completion

STATELINE, Nev. - Lane closures in place on Kingsbury Grade (SR 207) this summer have been removed now that the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has substantially completed a project to enhance roadway drainage pipes on the Carson Valley side of the road.

Motorists can still expect some intermittent minor shoulder and other closures.

Officer involved shooting leaves one man dead and two roads closed

10/30 Update: The shooting suspect from the officer involved shooting on October 29, 2018 has been positively identified as 34-year-old Billy Jo Johnson of Gardnerville, Nev.

Next of kin notifications have been completed.

Fire Weather Watch and Lake Wind Advisory for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Authorities are concerned with the forecast of gusty winds and low humidity in the Lake Tahoe area on Sunday, prompting the issuance of both a Lake Wind Advisory and Fire Weather Watch for much of the day.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Lake Wind Advisory for Lake Tahoe from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and a Fire Weather Watch from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Lanes of I-80 closed for project Sunday-Tuesday

Caltrans is alerting motorists to upcoming overnight lane closures on Interstate 80 east of Colfax due to continued construction work on the Truck Climbing Lane Project.

Motorists can expect alternating eastbound lanes closures between the Long Ravine Bridge and the Alpine (Secret Town Road) Overcrossing from 8:00 p.m. Sunday until 11:00 a.m. Monday and 6:00 p.m. Monday until 11:00 a.m. Tuesday for water blasting to remove temporary striping.

In addition, the eastbound #1 lane will remain closed until Tuesday when the water blasting has been completed.

Changes to South Lake Tahoe transit services

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As planned, the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) is changing transit routes and schedules starting November 1, 2018.

As announced in August, TTD announced an increase of services to improve access to neighborhoods including Meyers, more frequent services on busy routes and reduction of routes not meeting required performance measures.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For 29 years members of the Barton Hospital Auxiliary and their volunteers have been creating cheese balls to sell during the holidays, and for 29 years the popularity of the garlicky, nutty and slightly spicy cheese balls has continued to grow.

One creamy swipe across a piece of sourdough bread or dipped with a cracker, and anyone with a discerning palate can tell the difference between store-bought and these homemade delights.

But what is in that tasty swipe is a guarded secret.

No on Measure T leads 2018 campaign donations and expenses in South Lake Tahoe

At the first required filing of campaign paperwork, South Lake Tahoe City Council candidates raised just over $47,000 for the 2018 election season. Mayor Wendy David's $13,499 led candidates, which included a $10,000 loan to get her campaign started. Funds raised by a group formed to challenge Measure T, which bans vacation home rentals in the City outside the tourist core area, has raised $270,112.77 with most of it coming from the National Association of Realtors, local realtors and companies associated with the rentals.

Prescribed burns around Lake Tahoe set to resume

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Weather and conditions permitting, California State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service will continue the fall prescribed fire program with operations in D.L. Bliss State Park on the West Shore tomorrow, October 23, 2018, and in Baldwin Meadow on the south end of Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, October 24. Smoke will likely be present. Both of these operations will involve understory burning, which is explained below. A map with project locations and details is available for viewing at http://www.tahoefft.org.

Missoula Children’s Theatre auditions coming soon for Robin Hood

Tahoe Arts Project has brought Missoula Children's Theater back to South Lake Tahoe November 5-10, 2018. This season's performance is Robin Hood.

All children age five and above in grades K-12 are invited to the tryouts. No advance preparation is needed.

Auditions for Robin Hood will be held on Monday, Nov. 5 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Tahoe Valley Elementary School's Multi-Purpose Room. There are roles for approximately 60 children in K-12th grade.

Lake Tahoe area roadwork October 21-27

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The following is the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) roadwork schedule around Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County.

SPECIAL EVENT - U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from 5 Mile Road to Carson Road in Camino: Eastbound motorists can expect the left turn lanes to be closed at 5 Mile Road, lower Carson Road and upper Carson Road from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, October 21 and Saturday, October 27 for Apple Hill season traffic. Motorists will be directed to Exit 54/Cedar Grove to access Carson Road.
