STMS receives Toshiba grant for its Maker Lab program
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/25/2020 - 6:32amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Tahoe Middle School (STMS) has received a $2,676 STEM grant from the Toshiba America Foundation. These funds will support the 7th and 8th grade students in the year-long Maker Lab elective.
Local teen named National Youth Ambassador by Tobacco-Free Kids campaign
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/21/2020 - 11:08amWASHINGTON, D.C.—Twenty-five California students have been named as National Youth and Young Adult Ambassadors by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids for demonstrating leadership in fighting tobacco use in their communities.
These young leaders were among 133 youth and young adults from 33 states who participated in the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids’ Digital Advocacy Symposium, a five-day online training session focused on building advocacy, communications and leadership skills.
Winners announced in Clean Tahoe and Jamie Anderson essay contest
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/03/2020 - 9:32pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Clean Tahoe program recently teamed up with Olympic gold medalist, and South Lake Tahoe native, Jamie Anderson to hold an essay contest for local youth.
Anderson was joined by a local teacher and writer to be the judges and read through all of the 30 entries. They said it was a tough choice but they were able to narrow them down to three winners and five honorable mention awards.

As she did so, she remembered that she had promised a young 8th-grade boy that if he met her with his birth certificate verifying his age, that she would help cover his fee for AYSO soccer that year. She thought of what to do? I better go, she decided. As she approached their neighborhood in Bijou, she encountered not only the one boy she had promised to meet, but many other boys as well. She was in shock.

September 15, 2018 - 10:00am Welcome our Tech Trek attendees who will be giving us a presentation on their summer experience at UC Davis. Our presenters are 8th grade girls who attended our scholarship sponsored week long technology camp.
We will have an array of light refreshments and visitors are welcome. Please attend if you are interested in finding out more about what our local AAUW organization is involved in. There will be a brief business meeting to inform about our small group programming for fall.

AAUW South Lake Tahoe sponsors Tech Trek campers
Submitted by Anonymous on Mon, 06/11/2018 - 7:21amThe South Lake Tahoe branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), recently awarded three sponsorships to a week-long STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) focused Tech Trek Camp on the UC Davis campus in July. The winners are Kyla Schrauben, Daniela Bonilla, and Evelyn Bennett All three girls are from South Tahoe Middle School, with an alternate, Mia Roper, chosen from Whittell.
These girls who are entering 8th grade next September were nominated by their science/math teachers and selected following a personal interview.
Volunteers needed for new coed Sea Scout Ship program
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/09/2018 - 6:01pmThe South Lake Tahoe Yacht Club is sponsoring a new Sea Scout Ship for high school students and they are looking for five adult volunteers over the age of 21 to help. Local youth will learn small boat handling, sailing, wooden boat care and cruising.
There will be an adult training session on Saturday, March 10 at 11:00 a.m.
STHS Dance Team for a Day on January 20
Submitted by paula on Sun, 01/14/2018 - 11:25amAll students from 1st grade to 8th grade are invited to be part of the South Tahoe High Dance Team during the squad's 3rd annual Dance Team for a Day.
On January 20, participants will learn all the moves and then perform during halftime of the South Tahoe High Varsity Basketball game against Lowery High.
All participating kids get a t-shirt, lunch and a day of fun for $35. Funds go to held with Dance Team uniforms. Check in at 10:00 a.m. and perform at 2:30 p.m. Attire for the day are black leggings or sweatpants, jazz or tennis shoes, and hair needs to be worn away from face.
Sierra House principal leaving Lake Tahoe for Vacaville

Galles has accepted the position of Director of Elementary Education for the Vacaville Union School District (VUSD), a district with 12,000 students and 10 elementary schools.

Last day of school for South Lake Tahoe students announced

The California Department of Education (CDE) granted five of the seven days applied for, making the last day of school Tuesday, June 20, 2017.

Submitted by paula on Mon, 02/13/2017 - 8:33pmAs we look at reopening the Al Tahoe Elementary School as a STEAM academy, it is important to take a look back at the journey Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) has taken to get to where we are today.
Following decades of desegregation efforts and forced busing, lawsuits in the 1990s effectively brought a halt to desegregation efforts in the country. Neighborhood schools in South Lake Tahoe may have been segregated, not only based on race, but based on income levels.
STMS 8th graders hold their first ever convention
Submitted by paula on Sat, 10/08/2016 - 7:27pmThe first South Tahoe Middle School convention was complete with delegates, platforms, debates and slates. Every state was represented and the students spent the day Friday much as a participant at the national convention would.
Since the school year began, teachers James Seider and Andrew Losk have been teaching their eighth grade students about civic responsibilities and duties, what it means to be a citizen of the United States and about the political process.

The beginning of the school can be as hectic for parents as it is for kids due to the amount of paperwork to fill out and items to be purchased. Much of the class time on those first few days is filled with teachers collected those completed forms, sending kids to purchase gym clothes, school pictures, check out Chrome Books, and more. For the first time, both South Tahoe High and South Tahoe Middle Schools are holding "KickStart" day on Thursday, August 25 to alleviate some of those tasks. There will be a series of stations for students and parents to navigate through.
Kudos: Teens gain influence of community leaders at empowerment retreats

With the generosity of funding from Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra and MacDuff’s Public House, Live Violence Free worked closely with South Tahoe Middle School to engage 7th and 8th grade girls and boys in discovering their true potential for greatness.
Tahoe man headed to compete in the Endeavor Games
Submitted by admin on Wed, 06/08/2016 - 1:33pmThe South Lake Tahoe community pulled together behind Ryan Wallace in 2014 when he needed to buy a new prosthetic leg, which even at a discounted $25,000 was out of reach for the native man.
At the age of 19, Ryan had to have his leg amputated due to a rare form of bone cancer. The leg he received was wearing out after ten years, and the community helped Wallace buy the new one so he could walk and get back to coaching wrestling to the youth of the town.

What a great opportunity for young people in South Lake Tahoe! All kids in 2nd grade through 8th grade are invited to participate in the first ever STHS Dance Team camp on Saturday, January 24. After spending the day learning routines from the varsity Dance Team, attendees will be performing during a halftime show during the Viking varsity basketball against rival Truckee High.
Camp will start at 10 a.m. All participants will get a performance t-shirt and lunch. The cost is $35 per dancer. All proceeds go to support the Dance Team.
