AAUW South Lake Tahoe sponsors Tech Trek campers

The South Lake Tahoe branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), recently awarded three sponsorships to a week-long STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) focused Tech Trek Camp on the UC Davis campus in July. The winners are Kyla Schrauben, Daniela Bonilla, and Evelyn Bennett  All three girls are from South Tahoe Middle School, with an alternate, Mia Roper, chosen from Whittell.

These girls who are entering 8th grade next September were nominated by their science/math teachers and selected following a personal interview.

Girls will live in a dormitory, eat at the dining commons, and attend workshops in one of 5 fields: Anatomy/Physiology, Genetics, Engineering, 3-D Math and Coding Express. Workshop teachers plan engaging, intense, interactive sessions for three hours each morning with rotating subjects in 45 minute breakout sessions in the afternoons. Workshop subjects include Rescue in Space, Forensics Crime Solving, Grow your own Green Roof, Exploring Materials and Beyond, Chemistry of Sunscreen and Things that Glow, as well as on campus field trips to the Mondavi Center, Shrem Art Gallery, the veterinary hospital, astronomy night, and lectures by a professional women's panel about careers in STEM. Opening keynote speakers Jayme Poppin from Boeing and Congresswoman Doris Matsui are planned for this year's Tech Trek. AAUW is dedicated to advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.

Join the group on Saturday, September 8 at 10:30 a.m. for their next regular meeting to hear more about the girls’ experiences at camp. Meetings are held at LTCC in the Aspen Room.
