South Tahoe Public Utility District Seeks Public Input About Rate Increases and System Upgrades

My name is Keely Kapsoff and after reading an article that was posted up in Incline I realized that I too needed to write a story about my concern with the recycling program in Tahoe.

Well it all started a few years ago when I moved back here and I brought my recyclables into the dump, I did this for many months and realized that every time I gave the guy a bag he would just throw it on top of all the trash. I asked many employees why we don't just have a place to put all the blue bags? All responded that there is a conveyor belt and it sorts it.

North Lake Tahoe's Julia Mancuso Finishes 7th, Gains Momentum for Sochi

CORTINA d'AMPEZZO, Italy – Julia Mancuso from Squaw Valley, CA continued to gain momentum toward Sochi with seventh Thursday in an Audi FIS Alpine World Cup super G in Cortina for her best race of the season. Stacey Cook (Mammoth Mountain, CA) added to the U.S. momentum with ninth, her best super G finish since 2007. Austria’s Elisabeth Goergl won the race, which was a replacement for the canceled super G race last weekend due to a powerful winter storm that sidelined the weekend’s speed events.

24th Annual Best in the Basin Nominations Sought by TRPA

The nomination period is open for the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency’s 24th annual Best in the Basin awards program, which annually recognizes environmentally compatible projects in the Tahoe Basin that stand out as the best designed, planned and implemented.

Projects completed between October 12, 2012 and December 31, 2013 can be nominated for consideration by the judging panel in the spring or early summer of this year.

It's Not Just South Lake Tahoe Athletes Who Are Headed to the Olympics, Local Doctors are too!

There are more local additions to the U.S. Olympic team than the three South Lake Tahoe athletes who were named to the U.S. Olympic team. Two local doctors are also headed to Sochi for the winter games.

Terrence Orr, MD, and Jonathan Finnoff, DO, both physicians with Tahoe Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, will volunteer as team physicians at the 2014 Winter Olympics.

New Terrain Opens at Lake Tahoe's Heavenly Mountain Resort

Just in time for the Martin Luther King holiday, Lake Tahoe's Heavenly Mountain Resort is opening Boulder Lodge, Boulder Lift and Boulder Bowl on the Nevada side of the mountain.

Even with only 2-3" of new snow over the last few weeks, snow making operations are going to allow skiers to access the mountain from all four base mountain lodges.

Also opening on Saturday is Groove run for ski-thru, with a single jib line featuring seven small rails and boxes on the left-hand side of the run as well as EpicMix Racing, located on lower Ridge Run.

Lake Tahoe Tourism Officials Denounce Fireworks Lawsuit

With Tahoe South’s two annual fireworks celebrations meeting all state and federal standards throughout their 30-year history, area tourism officials strongly denounced a lawsuit that could threaten the annual July Fourth and Labor Day events as totally unnecessary.

In November, Joseph and Joan Truxler, of Zephyr Cove, Nev., filed a federal lawsuit against the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and Pyro Spectaculars North alleging the twice-annual fireworks shows violated the Clean Water Act.

El Dorado and Washoe County Deaths from Flu

El Dorado County health officials have confirmed an influenza-related fatality in a County resident. The individual was an adult who resided on the Western Slope of the County. This is the first confirmed flu-related fatality in El Dorado County this flu season.

In Washoe County, Nevada there have been 5 flu related deaths, bringing the total deaths in Nevada due to the flu to 8.

Road to Sochi: Lake Tahoe's Julia Mancuso13th in Zauchensee Downhill

Julia Mancuso of Squaw Valley finished 13th in the Audi FIS Alpine World Cup in Zauchensee, Austria, her best finish in this Olympic season. The race was won by Elisabeth Goergl of Austria who hadn't won a downhill race in two years.

South Lake Tahoe Voted Best Ski Destination

South Lake Tahoe was voted the Best Ski Destination in a highly contested USA Today reader ski poll conducted over the past four weeks.

Citing the beautiful views and fantastic skiing, voters were able to choose their favorite ski destination daily. Sun Valley, Idaho came in second with North Lake Tahoe in third, which shows everyone how popular Lake Tahoe skiing is as a whole.

Heavenly Opens the California Side on Saturday

Heavenly Mountain Resort will open the California side of the resort on Saturday, December 21, expanding open terrain to include Ridge Run, Patsy’s, Maggie’s, Skyline Trail, Sky Chute, and the beginner areas of the Enchanted Forest and DMZ near the California Main Lodge. With the opening of Skyline Trail and California Trail, guests will be able to ski and ride to and from the California side to the Nevada side and access top-to-bottom skiing and riding on the Nevada side. With the California opening, the resort will operate 19 lifts, accessing 17 trails and 13.5 miles of skiable terrain.

It takes a Community to Make a Difference and What a Difference a Year Makes

As 2013 draws to a close, it provides an opportunity to reflect on the accomplishments of many this year. Soccer Coaches Hired for Lake Tahoe Community College

Benjamin Wade and Christian DeLeon were hired as the new LTCC soccer coaches at Tuesday night's Lake Tahoe Community College Board meeting. Both coaches will head up the newly established intercollegiate soccer program at the college. Wade will be the men's head coach and DeLeon the women's.

South Lake Tahoe in the Running For "America's Best Ski Destination"

Voters chose Lake Tahoe as "America's Best Lake" in 2012 and the local area is now up for another top honor as "America's Best Ski Destination."

The Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority is seeking votes from the local community through the month until the contest's end on December 30 at 8:50 pm PST. Online votes can be made daily on the voting site. North Lake Tahoe is also in the running along with Sun Valley, Idaho and other big resorts.

Holiday Activities in South Lake Tahoe This Weekend

Santa Run in South Lake Tahoe on Sunday to Raise Funds for Local Charities

The 2nd Annual Santa Run will be bringing out runners in all of their holiday costume as they run from Blue Angel Cafe on Ski Run, up the hill to the end at Himmel Haus. It will be held on Sunday, December 1 at 4:30 pm.

You'll see Santas, elves, presents and whatever other costumes the runners can come up with as they run the mile long course. At the end of the run there will be door prizes, a buffet and prizes awarded to the top three finishers in costume and best costume.

Chief Probation Officer Appointed for El Dorado County

The County of El Dorado and the Judges of the Superior Court of California, County of El Dorado, are pleased to announce that Brian Richart has accepted appointment as El Dorado County’s new Chief Probation Officer. A unique position under California law, the Chief Probation Officer is appointed by the judges of the Superior Court, with the Board of Supervisors setting the salary and benefit levels. Due to the importance of this position, the Superior Court worked collaboratively with the Sheriff’s Department and county officials to select the best possible candidate.

Round Hill Pines Scheduled to Change Operators at End of 2013

Bob and Tammy Hassett, current operators of Camp Richardson and Meeks Bay Resort have been selected to run the concession at Round Hill Pines Resort according to Cheva Heck of the U.S. Forest Service. The current lease is held by the Forvilly family and is set to expire on December 31, 2013. Frank Forvilly has operated Round Hill Pines since 1971 and just found out yesterday that they weren't awarded the new contract.

Terri Arnold of South Lake Tahoe Wins Carson Valley Rider Contest

Humor and distinctive footwear shone through in a contest to find a spokeswoman for the Carson Valley. In September, the Carson Valley Visitors Authority announced its nationwide search for a “storyteller on horseback.” Fifteen women answered the call and in video submissions, which ranged from a poetic ode to the Carson Valley to a distinctive pair of pink stilettos, made their case to be the area’s spokeswoman.

Popular Stanford Professor Dies in South Lake Tahoe

Clifford Nass, a popular professor at Stanford University, passed away at South Lake Tahoe's Stanford Camp on Saturday, November 2. He was well known for his studies on the way people interact with technology and for his work on individual differences associated with multi-tasking.

Nass, 55, was in South Lake Tahoe to attend the fall Staff and Faculty Weekend at Stanford Camp which is located on the shores of Fallen Leaf Lake. He suffered a heart attack.

Online BMP Designer Tool Now Available for Lake Tahoe Homeowners

Lake Tahoe property owners and contractors can now design their own residential BMPs (Best Management Practices) with a free online tool provided by the TRPA.

BMP Designer is a GIS based tool found on the agency's Stormwater Management Program's website.

In order to utilize the BMP Designer, users should have knowledge of their property’s physical characteristics including:

• The direction water flows on the property
• Where utilities are located (always call 811 prior to digging)
