South Lake Tahoe Toys for Tots drive brings in gifts for 347 local youth
Submitted by paula on Wed, 12/16/2020 - 7:53amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The holidays will be a bit more brighter this season after the community Toys for Tots toy drive provided special gifts for 347 kids.
Toys were collected in bins located around the community as well as online via Walmart's virtual toy drive.
The presents will be given to youth from the Family Resource Center who collected applications for the Toys for Tots organizer. Now the families will be picking up a bag full of books, toys and stuffed animals.
South Lake Tahoe Library: Book sales canceled

Unfortunately, due to weather and grounds concerns and also increasing Covid-19 virus cases in the area, we are canceling our Saturday, November 21 sale and suspending book sale events until the weather warms or we can go back inside. As conditions change, we will let you know and welcome your participation.

Lake Tahoe News was the preeminent source for news about the greater Lake Tahoe area from 2009-18. When it closed in summer 2018 the site was accessible via a paywall. That has been removed so people may access past stories without paying a fee.

They couldn't sew, so making masks were out of the question. What could they do?
They could tell a story.
The nine-year-old Mackenzie and her dad, who wrote the book under a pen name, M.C. Behm, started to explore what messages they could convey between the front and back covers.

The South Lake Tahoe Library is holding a parking lot/sidewalk book sale on Saturday, November 14th from 12:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tables will be set up with a great selection of books to choose from.
Prices are only $5 a bag and $1 per large, coffee table books. Great selection for fireside reading this winter.
For the health and safety of all, masks will be worn, entry will be monitored to one person (or family group) per table and hand sanitizer will be available. At check-out, correct change is appreciated.

Cuppa Tahoe brings books, coffee and community to South Lake Tahoe

"I wanted to create magic and had this idea for a long time," explained Sandra. She grew up in Holland where there were places where people would meet, talk and enjoy, and wanted that in South Lake Tahoe. She also grew up with a love of books that has stayed with her as she lived in Tunisia and now the United States. Books were both her inspiration and her escape.

South Lake Tahoe Library thanks all for successful summer program
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/01/2020 - 8:21pmThe South Lake Tahoe Library just wrapped up our Summer Reading Challenge, which encouraged children, teens, and adults to read all summer long. As with most things, this year looked different than past years with the entire program being moved online.
Although we had fewer participants, El Dorado County patrons still logged almost 20,000 books and earned a total of 872 prizes!

On August 15th, we hosted our very first ever Drive-thru Grab Bag Book Sale. The traditional book sales are our biggest fundraisers and due to CDC restrictions, they are just not possible.
This new format was uncertain but you rose to the challenge. You generously donated books to be sold and you embraced this unique event making it a huge success. Thank you sincerely for being there for the Friends and for your library.

The Friends of the Library's first ever "Drive-Thru Book Sale" will be held on Saturday, August 15, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the South Lake Tahoe Library. Come to the library's parking lot, drive through to the back parking lot and pick up bags of books, $5 a bag, packed with at least eight (but probably more) books of a certain category. A masked worker will deliver the appropriate bag to you or your trunk. Hand sanitizer will be used after each transaction.

Choices for Children has free children's items for South Lake Tahoe families in need

The nonprofit agency located at 1029 Takela Drive, suite 2 is letting locals know about what is available at this time. They have children's clothing, toys and books, weekly summer food bags from Bread & Broth 4 Kids, and monthly diapers and wipes through their Healthy Bottom Line program.
They also currently have a surplus of Similac Neosure Formula.
Genoa's famous and historic Candy Dance canceled for 2020

In a 5-0 vote Wednesday, the Genoa Town Advisory Board decided to forego the event due to health and safety concerns for residents, vendors, staff and sponsors.

Beloved South Lake Tahoe teacher retires

When he landed in South Lake Tahoe Kovac already had spent time teaching at Fairfax High School, Emerson Junior High, James Rutter Middle School, and Paul Revere Middle School, but he found his niche beginning locally at South Tahoe Middle School.
After one year at STMS Kovac took the position as athletics and activities director at South Tahoe High School (STHS), a position he held for five years.
Peaceful candlelight vigil held in South Lake Tahoe

On Saturday, May 30, a peaceful candlelight vigil was held at Lakeview Commons in South Lake Tahoe to highlight "Black Lives Matter" and to raise awareness of racial injustice.
State of California travel bans still in place, even as El Dorado County lifts their order
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/28/2020 - 9:17amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Wednesday, May 27, El Dorado County rescinded its nonessential travel ban into the Lake Tahoe Basin, just as it did when letting the County-specific Stay At Home order expire in April.
The messaging is confusing as local orders are lifted, and state orders are still in place.
The action by the County does not mean that travel into Lake Tahoe Basin is all of a sudden okay though.
Free books for South Lake Tahoe first graders
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/28/2020 - 8:12amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Attention parents of local first graders! Every first grader enrolled in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) or at Zephyr Cove Elementary School will get a brand-new, hardbound book they can keep forever!
When parents go to their LTUSD school’s designated Materials Collection Date on June 9 or June 10, one new book will be gifted to each child along with a free puppet.
Parents of first graders at Zephyr Cove Elementary will be contacted prior to the last day of school with additional details for book and puppet pickup.
South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County businesses move towards green light on reopening

Soroptimist of Tahoe Sierra's virtual Elegant Evening a success
Submitted by paula on Tue, 04/21/2020 - 9:04amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Many nonprofits have had to cancel their fundraisers due to the coronavirus, but the ladies of the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) club in South Lake Tahoe weren't going to let the virus stop them.
Their 31t annual Elegant Evening was slated to be held at Harrah's Tahoe on April 18 with a sit-down dinner, live music, and dancing, raffle, and auction. The venue closed and restrictions on meeting in groups of over 10 people were created, so what do you do with an event that brings together 500 community members?
Move it online, of course.
South Lake Tahoe library offering story time and other digital services while closed
Submitted by paula on Sat, 04/04/2020 - 5:47pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Even though the El Dorado County library in South Lake Tahoe is closed to the public to comply with social distancing requirements, many services including storytime are offered online.
Library cards that are due to expire have been extended. All books due during their closed times will be accepted after reopening with no late fees. Their drop box is closed so no books can be dropped off.
All due dates have been extended to May 29, 2020.

Family Resource Center “Bookworks” celebrates 27 years serving South Lake Tahoe community

The nonprofit's store is currently located in the Lakeview Plaza, 3330 Lake Tahoe Blvd # 9, South Lake Tahoe, Calif. Their current hours are 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday-Saturday.
Through the generous support of the local community with donations of books and the volunteers who manage the store, there are currently over 5000 books that cover over 160 genres for sale.

Sierra Speaker Series: A Sentimental Journey Along Highway 395

TRUCKEE, Calif. - Sierra State Parks Foundation presents a presentation on covering the history of Highway 395. The March 21 talk will be held at the Donner Memorial State Park Visitor Center located at 12593 Donner Pass Road in Truckee, CA. The discussion will start at 5pm. There is a suggested $5 donation to attend and the State Park parking fee is waived for the evening. Refreshments available and book signing will occur after the presentation. Seating is limited. 150th anniversary of Carson City Mint celebrated with public activities, special coin

It is one thing to study history; it is another witness it. Visitors to the Nevada State Museum in Carson City this Tuesday, Feb. 4, will find themselves in history’s front row as the museum celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Carson City Mint. Just as it did 150 years earlier to the day, the Mint’s Coin Press No. 1 will be pressing silver coins, complete with the famous “CC” mint mark.
The Crossing in South Lake Tahoe sold for $14.8M

Arrests and medical issues down during second day of SnowGlobe in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/31/2019 - 1:18pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. The second night of the 9th annual SnowGlobe Music Festival in South Lake Tahoe is in the books.
From a law enforcement side, things have been fairly quiet when compared to past years. On Monday night there were 35 citations issued by the Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC), all related to minors in possession or adults furnishing alcohol to minors.
The South Lake Tahoe Police Department arrested two people for public intoxication at the event.
Law enforcement spends the day reading with kids and giving away gifts in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/23/2019 - 3:05pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Deputies from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) and officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) joined forces this holiday to help spread cheer and gifts to children in the community.
On Saturday, December 21, the deputies and officers collaborated to provide a book reading, meet and greet with Santa and gift-giving to the children of South Lake Tahoe. The kids thought they were coming for the popular SLTPD Books & Badges and were treated to a BIG surprise.

Kids will read with officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department at the library starting at 10:30 a.m. They will read a special story with local law enforcement and learn what they do in the community.

Big crowd shows up to welcome Humane Society back to South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/10/2019 - 9:28pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) has opened an office in South Lake Tahoe to better serve the community and they celebrated along with a full crowd at their grand opening reception on Tuesday.
HSTT came to the aid of the South Shore after the former director of the Lake Tahoe Humane Society embezzled almost $60,000. Its members tried to hold the 51-year-old agency together but it disbanded in January of this year, never being able to gain back the trust of the community.

A reported 7.6 million people took to the streets, the biggest climate mobilization in history. From small villages to big cities, people spoke, walked, joined hands and used their voices in defense of the climate and an end to reliance on fossil fuels.

A wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter and friend, she will be dearly missed by those that knew and loved her. She was a compassionate person, kind to everyone, not one to talk about others and always there for you in a time of need. She was born on June 19, 1942 at home in Whitt, Texas, the youngest of 6 children and 12 years younger than the next oldest sibling.
