Progress for Tahoe, a grassroots group of concerned local citizens who gathered together to address the most pressing issues in Tahoe, have endorsed the following for South Lake Tahoe City Council, Measure T, El Dorado County Supervisors and U.S. Representative California District 4:

With the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center report released Thursday, it looks like Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada will be warmer than average and experience an average precipitation year.

A mild winter could be in store for much of the United States this winter according to the report. In the U.S. Winter Outlook for December through February, above-average temperatures are most likely across the northern and western U.S., Alaska and Hawaii.

Additionally, a weak El Nino has a 70 to 75 percent chance of developing.

Warming temperatures pose major challenges for Lake Tahoe's environment, communities, and the outdoor recreation that drives its economy. Research by University of California, Davis's Tahoe Environmental Research Center, University of Nevada, Reno, and Desert Research Institute clearly shows Lake Tahoe is warming.

In August, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) awarded $27.5 million to fund high-priority forest health projects designed to combat climate change and reduce the risk of wildfires.

During their board meeting Thursday the California Tahoe Conservancy Board accepted their portion, a $2.3 million grant, for fire prevention projects and related efforts as part of the Tahoe-Central Sierra Initiative.

The 2018 Aviation Roundup at the Minden-Tahoe airport will feature the US Navy Blue Angels flying team and 11 different flying acts this weekend, October 13 and 14.

Gates for the airshow will open at 10:00 a.m. on both Saturday & Sunday, and the airshow will start around 11:30. The starting time is subject to change due to scheduling and weather, so please plan on being ready by 11:00 am.

It wraps up between 4:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After a referendum to put a halt to the South Lake Tahoe cannabis ordinance was successful, a meeting held Monday was to work through the points of the ordinance Cody Bass and Tahoe Wellness Cooperative took issue with.

Led by the City Council representatives Austin Sass and Brooke Laine, members of the original cannabis workgroup, Cody Bass and some members of the public, about two dozen in total, spent three hours trying to come up direction for the city attorney to use in creating a new ordinance.

On April 18, 2017 the South Lake Tahoe City Council unanimously passed a resolution to do two things: Power the South Lake Tahoe community with electricity provided from 100 percent renewable sources by 2032; and reduce community carbon emissions from baseline by at least 80 percent by 2040. The 100% Renewable Committee was formed to help the City accomplish these tasks.

A South Lake Tahoe man won gold in the Heavyweight Para-Division of the Abu-Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu-Jitsu Tournament recently in Los Angeles.

Ryan Wallace, who we've written many stories about over the last four years, competed against para-athletes from around the world for the second consecutive year at the tournament. In 2017 Wallace won the silver medal and he spent the last year working tirelessly to improve, capping his 2018 performance with a hard fought 7-0 victory.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On the heels of the banning of electric scooters in many cities, Governor Jerry Brown of California has signed a bill that mandates helmets for users only if they are under the age of 18 and if the scooter goes above 15 miles per hour.

The bill, authored by Republican Assemblyman Heath Flora of Ripon, was written to encourage scooter use to alleviate congestion on the state's roads and meet climate change goals of reducing car emissions.

The law takes effect Jan. 1, 2019.

It only takes a one degree change in temperature to convert water to steam, water to ice or water to snow. That is because we live in an instant gratification society and want results now, when in fact a number of small changes done day in day out will make a massive difference to our lives and the communities of Lake Tahoe.

In classic Tahoe style, when there is a problem we study it. In the past five years, the housing issue has been studied on several fronts. In that time, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, Placer County and the North Tahoe-Truckee area have all conducted Housing Studies and the City of South Lake Tahoe updated its Housing Element. What has been the result of all these studies? This column highlights the key recommendations from those studies and where we are now in terms of implementation.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Thursday, the South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) Board of Directors discussed changing their administrative code to allow for the transfer of sewer and water units from one parcel to another in order to encourage the building of affordable housing projects.

Since 2012, the transfer of the sewer units have not been allowed by STPUD, but with the current lack of affordable housing on the South Shore the board will look to approve a change of the code at their September 20, 2018 meeting.

Firefighers now have a containment line around three percent of the Boot Fire as 6,873 acres have burned. Fire activity moderated yesterday with little fire growth occurring. More than 570 firefighters and numerous helicopters are making headway.

By a unanimous vote, the South Lake Tahoe City Council approved a new policy and set of procedures that will allow for the rare occasions where a street can be renamed after a prominent person who has achieved prominence as a result of their significant, positive contribution to the county or community.

With Mrs. Lisa Maloff's significant financial contributions to the community over the past few years in mind, the Council was asked to look into a policy that would pave the way for street name changes requests in special circumstances.

August at Lake Tahoe ended in crazy fashion on Friday when The Scorpions and Queensrÿche’ brought their Crazy World tour to Harveys Outdoor Arena.

Founded in Hannover, West Germany in 1965, Scorpions were part of the first wave of metal in the 1970s with their debut album, “Lonesome Crow,” released in 1972. The band rose to arena status with seminal releases “Lovedrive,” “Virgin Killer” and “Animal Magnetism.”

The California Highway Patrol’s (CHP) Valley Division and Golden Gate Divisions, having jurisdiction over the Sacramento regions and San Francisco Bay Area, are partnering with the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) to participate in an “I-80 Challenge.”

This effort aims to reduce distracted and reckless driving along the 615 miles of Interstate 80 from San Francisco, Calif. to the Nevada/Utah Stateline from Monday, August 27 – Labor Day, September 3, 2018, by enhancing traffic safety, enforcement, and education along this section of the National Highway System.
