90% of Mountain yellow-legged frogs have disappeared in Sierras, can they recover?
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/05/2017 - 11:28amEvent Date:
April 6, 2017 - 6:00pm
Imagine a world with no frogs. No longer would you hear frog melodies in the evening, algae would flourish, and entire ecosystems could change dramatically. This is a possibility in the Sierra Nevada because 90 percent of the Mountain yellow-legged frogs have been disappearing due to an amphibian pathogen and loss of habitat from fish introductions in our lakes.

Humans produce carbon pollution. It's no secret. When we drive our cars, heat and light our homes, grow our food... we emit CO2. All around the world, habitats called carbon sinks have absorbed approximately 25% of this carbon pollution reducing the risk of global warming impacts without imposing a monetary cost on society.

Guest Columnist: Working together to improve Tahoe’s transportation system
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/16/2017 - 1:30pmAs a national treasure offering world-class recreation opportunities, Lake Tahoe is one of the most popular outdoor destinations in Northern California and Nevada. And sometimes, being popular has its challenges.
Tahoe’s limited roadways become congested during times of peak visitation, when thousands of people who live in nearby metropolitan areas get in their cars to drive up to our small mountain communities. Suddenly, a road system designed for 55,000 residents must handle four to five times that many cars on an average busy day.

Here is the forecast from the National Weather Service:
Tonight - Isolated showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 35. Southwest wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Informed drivers one way to prevent Sunday gridlock in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/14/2017 - 2:28pmMany drivers plan ahead when planning their travel along highways in interstates across the county. Want to miss rush hour? Don't hit that city in the morning and late afternoon. Mad dash to Santa Cruz on a warm Saturday? Leave early in the morning or go the night before to miss the backup of traffic.
Smooth travel over Highway 50 in the Sierra requires the same planning or one will get stuck in heavy traffic on Friday evenings heading to Lake Tahoe, or Sunday mornings leaving Lake Tahoe (or the day after a holiday).

Kudos: A Thank You from South Shore’s Hardy Pedestrians, Cyclists, and Bus Riders
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/13/2017 - 7:05pmA big thank You to the City of South Lake Tahoe, the County of El Dorado, and the businesses and residents of Tahoe’s South Shore for clearing the snow from your sidewalks and paths.
Even during these big storms, you have made sure the multi-use paths and many sidewalks on the South Shore are passable. And after two feet of snow overnight, you made the roads and paths safe enough for 500+ locals to take to the streets by 11am on Jan 21st for the Women’s March. This is a big and welcome change from the previous years of sidewalk and bike path "freshies". Let’s save those for the slopes.

Daylight Savings Time begins Sunday, don't forget to move clocks forward!
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/10/2017 - 5:18pmBen Franklin was only kidding when he suggested 232 years ago that towns should employ the use of church bells or cannon blasts, if necessary, to wake citizens at sunrise so they could take full advantage of sunlight – a thrifty alternative to pricey candle power.
More than two centuries later, the joke's still on us. This Sunday is the annual ritual of moving our clocks ahead one hour at 2:00 a.m. (of course, nobody will know if you do it a little early like when you head off to bed ).
