SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe and other communities around the lake will join the nation on Tuesday, January 19 as they honor those who have died during the pandemic.
South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and Lake Valley Fire Honor Guard will take part in the nationwide bell-ringing ceremony at 2:30 p.m. There will not be a public ceremony but all are encouraged to ring bells or turn their outdoor lights on to participate in the memorial as well.
Teresa Diane Golden ~ 1944 - 2020
Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/12/2021 - 9:00pmTeresa Diane Golden, known as Teri, passed away peacefully in her home on December 29, 2020. She was 76. Teri loved living in South Lake Tahoe. She was active in the Democratic Party, Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless, Christmas Cheer, the Drugstore Project, helping hikers on the Pacific Rim Trail, the AARP tax preparation, and many other endeavors. Teri was also a member of the Community Presbyterian Church and The Women of the Moose. Her neighbors described her as a loving and generous person.

Food assistance in South Lake Tahoe through the holidays

Bread & Broth will be open on Monday, December 21 and 28 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. with bags of food. Also, their Friday food bag operation will not be open on Christmas Day but will resume on New Year's Day, January 1, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. They are located at St. Theresa Grace Hall at 1041 Lyons Avenue, South Lake Tahoe.

Tattoo, hair, and massage parlors are allowed to remain open and deemed as “essential” for Personal Care Services. What about Spiritual Care Services?
When we are at church, we are one in Christ, in prayer, taking authority over the enemy and over the fallen things in this world. There is a supernatural power in the “two or three” gathering together!
Bread & Broth seeks donations for South Lake Tahoe Community Thanksgiving meals
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/05/2020 - 10:00amBread & Broth is seeking donations for a Thanksgiving Meal Giveaway that will be distributed on Monday, November 23, 2020 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at St. Theresa Grace Hall in South Lake Tahoe.
During past Thanksgiving holidays, Bread & Broth has sponsored a hot Thanksgiving turkey dinner with all the trimmings, once that guests could enjoy with the fellowship of others in the community. During those dinners over 250 individuals joined in the special holiday meal.
This year will have to be different due to the COVID-19 restrictions.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Seven hundred people will be the recipients of the next Overland Meat & Seafood "Tacos for Tahoe" giveaway on Monday, October 26 starting at 10:00 a.m.
Brian Cohen, owner of the popular market in South Lake Tahoe, will be continuing what they did three different times at the beginning of the pandemic. At the first ground beef giveaway Cohen went through all 1,000 pounds of meat in 90 minutes.
This time he giving away 1,400 pounds.
"Many people are still struggling in our town," he said. "We are here to help out the community."

A recent feature article by the Association of California Water Agencies pointed out that STPUD is one of only a handful of utility districts in the entire world that can claim 100% reuse of wastewater and bio solids. Here’s how. We use centrifuges instead of the usual pollution causing burners. That allows us to make fertilizer for ranch land.

Jack Green ~ 2001 - 2020

His rapid decline in mental health was caused by many factors, central to which was the COVID-19 quarantine. Jack’s family and friends struggle to understand the delusion and despair which lead to this, when his life held such promise.
Fire updates: Fork, North, Slink, Creek
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/09/2020 - 8:47pmThere are over 40 major fires currently burning in California, filling skies with heavy smoke from the ocean to the Sierra up and down the state. While there are no fires in the Lake Tahoe Basin, there are a few close enough to be responsible for sending smoke into the region. The closest is the Fork Fire east of Lake Tahoe about 13 miles northeast of Pollock Pines. To the south is the Slink Fire and northwest is the large North Complex.

Statistics on the Fork Fire have not been updated all day. As of 11:00 a.m. Wednesday the estimated size was 2,500 acres.
Volunteers needed for El Dorado County Food Bank giveaway in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Food Bank of El Dorado County is looking for volunteers to help distribute food to individuals in need on August 26 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in South Lake Tahoe.
Distribution will be located at St.Theresa's Catholic Church parking lots located at 1041 Lyons Avenue. Volunteers will be bagging up fresh produce and pushing shopping carts full of food to the recipient's vehicles.

Marjorie Louise Daum ~ 1938 - 2020

The well known local businesswoman was 82.
Marjorie was as a very kind and sweet person, always greeting everyone with a cheerful smile and a hug. Her strong courage, humility, honesty and faith guided her successful path through life.
She was born on February 24, 1938 and moved with her family to South Lake Tahoe in 1947 where they lived at the Al Tahoe Pines Resort. The family's marine service station was where the current Globin's building and Pick 6 are currently located.
Bread & Broth and the Attic team up to provide food and supplies to the South Lake Tahoe community

They will be in the parking lot of St. Theresa Church at 1041 Lyons Avenue, South Lake Tahoe from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for the public, but need volunteers starting at 9:00 a.m.

Bread & Broth needs volunteers for Monday and Friday food giveaways

Never skipping a beat, Bread & Broth moved from serving hot meals twice a week at St. Theresa Church Grace Hall to giving away bags of food including fresh produce, dairy and eggs from the hall's foyer.
They also changed their weekly food backpack program from schools to bus stops, and now the Bread & Broth 4 Kids program gives away food each week from that same foyer.
Bread & Broth 4 Kids starts free summer food program for South Lake Tahoe youth
Submitted by paula on Sun, 06/28/2020 - 4:09pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the fourth consecutive summer, the St. Theresa Bread & Broth 4 Kids Summer Program will provide weekly food bags for South Lake Tahoe youth every Wednesday until school resumes in August.
Since local schools closed in March due to the coronavirus, Bread & Broth 4 Kids (BB4K) has provided weekly food bags to students at bus stops and schools in coordination with the Lake Tahoe Unified School District as they distributed daily meals. Some weeks the BB4K bags went to over 410 children.
Homeless man severely burned in South Lake Tahoe fire
Submitted by paula on Mon, 06/08/2020 - 4:00pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A homeless man suffered burns over 50 percent of his body after he fell asleep next to a warming/cooking fire in South Lake Tahoe on Thursday.
On June 4 at approximately 3:42 p.m., South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue responded to a call of a fire between Smart & Final and Christian Science Church on Lake Tahoe Boulevard.
The unidentified man was airlifted to the burn unit at UC Davis. His current condition is unknown at this time.

Submitted by paula on Mon, 06/08/2020 - 3:32pmOn Thursday afternoon about 4:30 p.m. a fire crew from South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) responded to a brush fire at the Christian Science Church near Smart & Final. The crew managed to contain and extinguish the blaze and the church building sustained only minimal damage.
A shopping cart was found near what appeared to be the fire origin and contained what appeared to be personal property. The exact cause of the blaze is unknown but illegal campers have been a continuing problem in that area.

St. Theresa Catholic Church is holding its shredding fundraiser on Saturday, May 30 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the church's parking lot. The suggested donation is $5-$10 per box.
All funds raised will go to support the St. Theresa Religious Education Department to benefit the youth of the parish. The church is located at 1041 Lyons Avenue in South Lake Tahoe.

Hope Lutheran Church to offer free sack lunches to the community

Homeless and anyone in need of a meal are invited to stop by the church on Fridays at 11:00 a.m. to receive a free sack lunch. The church is located at 930 Julie Lane at the Y, just past Jim Bagan Toyota.
Soroptimist of Tahoe Sierra's virtual Elegant Evening a success
Submitted by paula on Tue, 04/21/2020 - 9:04amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Many nonprofits have had to cancel their fundraisers due to the coronavirus, but the ladies of the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) club in South Lake Tahoe weren't going to let the virus stop them.
Their 31t annual Elegant Evening was slated to be held at Harrah's Tahoe on April 18 with a sit-down dinner, live music, and dancing, raffle, and auction. The venue closed and restrictions on meeting in groups of over 10 people were created, so what do you do with an event that brings together 500 community members?
Move it online, of course.
Tahoe Women's Community Fund selects awardees of $125,000 in grants

This year they received applications for grants from over 50 organizations. Of that group, 11 non-profits on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe have been chosen to receive $125,000 that will be distributed.

COVID-19 cases in the South Lake Tahoe area up to 9, El Dorado County at 22
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/03/2020 - 4:02pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two more positive tests for COVID-19 were received in the South Lake Tahoe region of El Dorado County, and one more in El Dorado Hills, bringing the county total up to 22.
Two of the new cases were community-acquired and one is under investigation.
The South Lake Tahoe region of the county runs from Tahoma to Meyers and includes the city of South Lake Tahoe.
To date, 849 have been tested for the virus in El Dorado County with 683 coming back negative and the results on about 144 are still pending.
When times are tough, South Lake Tahoe volunteers and businesses step up

Base Camp Pizza has been one of those businesses that have helped out the community. On Friday they dropped off 120 pizzas, 75 salads and 100 pasta dishes to Bijou Community School for families there who were picking up kids' homework and other supplies to use for at-home study. Local girl scouts donated boxes of cookies to hand out.
New interim fire chief for Lake Valley Fire Protection District

The current chief, Tim Alameda, will be retiring starting May 9, but he will be using accrued vacation and sick time until then.

Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/11/2020 - 10:24pmTHIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED. The Knights of Columbus at Saint Theresa Church in South Lake Tahoe are preparing for their annual Saint Patrick's dinner to be held on Sunday, March 15.
The dinner will be a traditional corned beef and cabbage meal with potatoes, carrots, Irish soda bread and plenty of desserts. It will run from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the church's Grace Hall, located at 1041 Lyons Avenue in South Lake Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District
Both concerts scheduled for this week have been canceled.
All upcoming kindergarten tours have been canceled.
Contact individual schools for on-site meetings.
All high school athletic games and meets have been canceled until further notice.
Three arrested in South Lake Tahoe on gun and theft charges
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/10/2020 - 9:58pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Three local residents were arrested on March 9 on various gun and theft charges after being found asleep in a vehicle on the grounds of Lake Tahoe Christian Fellowship.
At approximately 7:10 a.m., an alert officer from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) located a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of the church located at 3580 Blackwood Avenue. The vehicle was occupied by two men and a woman, all who appeared to be sleeping.
Noboru Oishi, MD ~ 11/11/28 - 3/5/20

Originally from Kauai, Hawaii, Dr. Oishi first traveled to Lake Tahoe in 1979 and has made South Lake Tahoe his second home ever since. Noboru and his wife, Jeri, split their time between Tahoe and Texas. Besides being an oncologist, Dr. Oishi and Jeri owned the Enchanted Florist in South Lake Tahoe

SnowGlobe 2019 was able to successfully expand their sustainability program, non-profit, and charitable giving initiatives, they said in a report released Monday.
In 2017, SnowGlobe began its partnership with The Sugar Pine Foundation, planting 200 sugar pine seedlings to help restore Lake Tahoe’s sugar pine population, which now makes up less than 5 percent of the Tahoe Forest.

Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/27/2020 - 9:22pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Since 1978, Tom and Cheryl Millham have been operating Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, taking in sick and injured wildlife from across the region with a goal of rehabilitating them for release back into the wild. For most of those years, they used their home and backyard for the cages, aviary, brick enclosures and rehab facilities.

Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/27/2020 - 6:28pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Saint Theresa Catholic Church's 26th annual Classy Crab Dinner will be held on February 8 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the church's Grace Hall in South Lake Tahoe.
The public is invited to attend the always fun event which includes a lively dessert auction.
The cost is $45 per person ($50 at the door) and reserved tables for 10 are available for an additional $135. Must be 21 or older to attend. Funds raised will fo to Faith Formation programs and parish building maintenance.

Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/30/2019 - 9:40pmOn December 23, Andy and Ellen Dauscher, and their daughters Ali and Carleigh, shared the blessings of the holiday season with the dinner guests attending Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal dinner. Thanks to their Adopt A Day of Nourishment (AAD) sponsorship, the Dauscher Family funded B&B’s meal, and as a family, volunteered at the dinner to spread the holiday spirit and share the blessing of a holiday meal.
“What a wonderful way to start Christmas week,” shared Ellen. “We love helping our community members who are hungry. Thank you, Bread & Broth for letting us join you.”

Ronald Gordon Renaldi ~ 1933 - 2019

Born in Oakland, California on October 26, 1933 to Hazel and Joseph Renaldi. Ron grew up in Oakland, graduating from Saint Elizabeth High School in 1951. He earned a BS from the University of California, Berkeley in 1955.

December 14, 2019 (All day) St. Paul's Episcopal Church is pleased to present an evening of new and traditional Christmas music. Adam and Alissa Teachout Brian Gallagher and Angelese Pepper will perform using piano, marimba and cello. There sill be some singalong as well.
Refreshments will be served.
St. Paul's is right behind the Sparks Library.
Tickets may be purchased at the door.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A great start to the holiday season will be this weekend when the Tahoe Community Choir holds their annual Christmas Concert on Friday, December 6 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, December 8 at 3:00 p.m.
"Songs of Comfort and Joy" will be at St. Theresa Catholic Church and the public is invited to attend.
Tickets are available from choir members or at the door. General admission is $15, seniors and students are $12 and children 12 and under are free.
The church is located at 1041 Lyons Avenue, South Lake Tahoe.
