SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Since 1978 Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC) has been serving the community with a facility inside the home of founders, Tom and Cheryl Millham. Their long history of rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing Tahoe’s injured and orphaned wildlife has gained national attention.

The Chabad at Lake Tahoe will welcome author and Holocaust survivor Leon Malmed for a special presentation and accompanying book signing of his memoir “We Survived … At Last I Speak”

In 1942, Malmed and his sister were separated from their parents in occupied France when Malmed was 5-years-old. His parents ultimately perished at the now infamous death camps of Auschwitz-Birkenau, and he and his sister never saw them again. Malmed eventually immigrated to the United States in 1964, and went on to live in New York for the next 18 years.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - California has just experienced the deadliest and most destructive wildfire seasons with more than 8,500 fires burning an area of more than 1.8 million acres in 2018 alone.

Fire is no stranger to Lake Tahoe.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe man who led multiple law enforcement agencies on a high-speed pursuit in El Dorado County and Sacramento in May was indicted by a federal grand jury today on two counts.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Perhaps you know of them as mother-in-law units, tiny houses in the backyard or an extra apartment above a garage for renters. The term Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) has become a popular one in describing these types of housing as the affordable housing conversation turns towards solutions.

What are the benefits of ADUs?
- ADUs are an affordable type of home to construct in California because they do not require paying for land, major new infrastructure, structured parking, or elevators.

Genesis tells us that God destroyed all land and its inhabitants in judgment of sin within 1700 years of creation and Jesus affirms this in both the accounts of Luke and Mathew, yet modern academia (including many Christian schools) deny a global flood during the human experience. DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Another telephone scam is being reported to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) and they want to make sure residents, especially the senior population, are informed.

This latest scam is much like others in the past. Unidentified callers are telling the person answering the phone they have a warrant issued from the FBI. The scammer is seeking large sums of money, generally $2,000 to $,5000, be sent via the mail in the form of pre-paid gift cards.

Long-time South Lake Tahoe resident Janet McDougall sponsored Bread & Broth’s July 1st Adopt A Day of Nourishment. “I like to sponsor a day once each year to honor the memory of my parents, Mac and Jackie McDougall,” shared Janet. For four years Janet has been sponsoring a meal which feeds a nutritious and well-balanced meal to up to 100 dinner guests and she can always to counted on to support Bread & Broth’s program of easing hunger for those in need.

On June 24th, Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal fed 96 community members who arrived at St. Theresa’s Grace Hall between 4:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to be served beef stroganoff, sautéed zucchini, a green salad, fresh apricots and a lovely assortment of desserts. Sponsoring the meal for the evening was Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, whose $300 donation helped cover the costs of the meal, and who provided five Hard Rock team members to participate in their Adopt A Day of Nourishment sponsorship.

The community is invited to join the Tahoe Chamber in their visit to Carson City on July 16 from noon to 5:00 p.m. to explore how Carson City leaders and community members successfully transformed and revitalized their downtown main street.

The developing Main Street Management Plan for South Lake Tahoe parallels much of what Carson City did, and those going on the trek will have the chance to learn about the history of Nevada project and how the current business climate of the area has improved since the highway realignment.

The Tahoe Prosperity Center (TPC) mission is uniting Tahoe’s communities to strengthen regional prosperity. TPC provides regional solutions to regional needs on behalf of the communities that make up the Lake Tahoe region. One of those critical issues is a lack of housing for local workers. This negatively impacts businesses trying to hire workers and local residents who want to live, work and play in Lake Tahoe. Many workers in our Tourism driven economy find themselves unable to afford a home or apartment.

The Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club is truly committed to helping non-profit organizations in the Lake Tahoe South Shore community. From helping to fund activities for developmentally disabled children, to building ice rinks for the local curling teams, to feeding those in need in the community, Rotary provides funds for causes that improve the lives of our local community members.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Thousands of people decked out in their red, white and blue lined the parade route in South Lake Tahoe Thursday to celebrate the 4th of July.

Not only were record-breaking crowds watching the fifth year of the parade there was also the largest number of entries in the parade itself with 300 walkers, 80 entries including the City of South Lake Tahoe's 20-foot eagle balloon.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is more to do in South Lake Tahoe on the 4th of July than watch one of the top fireworks shows in the west.

To start off the holiday, the City of South Lake Tahoe is organizing the annual 4th of July parade down Highway 50 from Ski Run Boulevard to Bijou Community Park on Al Tahoe Boulevard starting at 10:00 a.m.

Scott Forrest Fine Art Studio is hosting the second annual exhibit of “Love is a National Treasure” on Thursday, June 27, 2019, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. “Love is a National Treasure” is a South Lake Tahoe event where Pride meets Art. This annual exhibit is designed to bring people together, showcase the diversity of our community, and celebrate Pride Month.

While many local groups have joined forces to develop housing for residents, the reality is that it takes time to build new housing. And time is what many of our local employers don't have right now as we head into summer. Faced with an immediate need to house their employees, employers have created their own solutions.

Welcome to summer! The solstice officially arrived Friday at 8:54 a.m., welcoming in the longest day of the year. As the snowpack melts away, and the lake fills above rim, we enter the warm and dry months that we relish after winter. As Lake Tahoe’s landscape begins to dry out, wildfire danger will grow.

Our respite from the seasonal dangers of wildfire here in the basin is coming to an end. With temperatures climbing, relative humidity lowering, and afternoon winds blowing across the lake, the basin will become susceptible to wildfire.

A 400-acre plume of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) has been found in some of the South Lake Tahoe groundwater and the agencies tasked with protecting the local drinking supply will be updating the community on cleanup efforts and the status of the plume on Wednesday, June 26 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the South Lake Tahoe City Council Chambers at the airport.

The South Tahoe Association of REALTORS® partnered with Vitalant, previously
United Blood Services, to host a Blood Drive on Monday, June 17. This event was open to the public. Realtors® and members of the community made appointments and dropped in to donate. There was a total of 22 donors, translating into 66 lives that can be saved.

“This is something that really only takes minutes of your time and is free to give. I’m happy to donate each year and glad to know that it will impact someone’s life in a positive way,” said Kili Ongoy, Chair of the Community Involvement Committee.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Superintendent Dr. James Tarwater of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) has announced he'll retire in one year.

Dr. Tarwater has been with LTUSD since 2005.

During their last meeting on June 11, the Board concluded its annual evaluation of Dr. Tarwater's performance. Though details of that evaluation are not available, they extended his contract one extra year until 2022 until they were notified of his notice of retirement.

At their June 25 meeting, the Board is scheduled to accept his retirement.

Thanks to the support of local health organizations, the Tahoe Warm Room was able to help 113 children, women and men during the region’s severe winter months.
