With a very high lake level, and overflowing rivers, caution and safety are urged to have a fabulous weekend in Lake Tahoe.
And they aren't only going to be dealing with water safety. Rules and regulations along the beaches will also be enforced for safety reasons.
Lake Tahoe road projects shut down for long holiday weekend
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/30/2017 - 7:41pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE – With heavy traffic expected around Lake Tahoe this long holiday weekend, both California and Nevada highway departments are suspending their roadwork projects.
Caltrans’ construction projects in the City of South Lake Tahoe and along the West Shore of the lake wrapped up work this morning and won’t resume until after the Fourth of July holiday.
Caltrans turns off crosswalk light at Camp Richardson through holiday
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/29/2017 - 3:40pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Caltrans has temporarily turned off the pedestrian hybrid beacon at Camp Richardson after backup in the congested area became a concern to both motorists and other agencies.
The light on State Highway 89 at Camp Richardson was turned off on June 27 and will remain off through the upcoming weekend and July 4th holiday.
New NAMI website for El Dorado County provides more information

NAMI is dedicated to mental health awareness and improving the quality of life for people with mental illness and their families through support, education, and advocacy.
Bridge painting work to affect Donner Lake interchange until August
Submitted by paula on Tue, 06/27/2017 - 7:46pmMotorists need to be aware of Caltrans roadwork that will affect travel to Donner Lake this summer. Overdue bridge painting and preservation work has closed Donner Lake Road under I-80 overcrossings.
This section of road will be closed until August 18.
Ramps to and from I-80 will remain open, allowing motorists to access the next available exit.
Snow and water still over many Desolation Wilderness trails

Many hikers are turning around because of difficulty they have in finding the trail because of the large amount of snow at upper elevations, limited dry ground, frozen lakes, and high stream crossings.
Squaw Valley extends hours for skiing and riding

Socioeconomic study on South Lake Tahoe vacation rentals released
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/14/2017 - 8:06pmWhen the South Lake Tahoe City Council voted on a new Vacation Rental Ordinance in 2015 they also promised to hire a consultant to prepare a socioeconomic study on the impact vacation home rentals (VHRs) have on the community.
The results of the study were presented to the City Council and the public during a special meeting on Tuesday.
Ebbetts Pass in Alpine County may remain closed into July
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/14/2017 - 10:37amA tough winter on Sierra Nevada roads is still taking its toll. State Route 4 over Ebbetts Pass remains closed for road repairs near Wolf Creek, and it is expected to remain closed into July.
The road is closed from the east end of Lake Alpine to 7.2 miles west of the junction with State Route 89.
Caltrans has been able to clear snow and make repairs on State Route 108 over Sonora Pass. It opened Tuesday afternoon.

Prescribed burns slated to resume in Lake Tahoe

If conditions are favorable, operations may take place on Brockway Summit and near Glenbrook. Operations may continue for several days, weather permitting. Navigating South Lake Tahoe during road construction
Submitted by paula on Sun, 06/11/2017 - 10:57amAs construction continues on Highway 50 from Winnemucca Avenue to the Y in South Lake Tahoe, drivers need to be aware of some recommended alternative routes since left-hand turns from the road are not available.
A lack of left-hand turns has drivers confused as to where to go. Some people are still making left-hand turns where prohibited, thus jamming up traffic and making navigation dangerous.
Kayaker reported missing in Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/09/2017 - 4:20pmThe search has been suspended for a man who was reported missing near Lester Beach, north of Emerald Bay in Lake Tahoe on Thursday.
On June 8 at 9:15 a.m., Pham Dan Vu Thanh (who goes by Dan), called a friend to tell him he was going kayaking and camping in the Lester Beach area. As of 6:15 p.m. that evening there had been no word from Dan.
Another hump to cross before summer weather arrives in Lake Tahoe

A Lake Wind Advisory is effect on Friday from noon to 7:00 p.m. Winds are expected from the southwest 15-20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. Wave heights on Lake Tahoe can be 1-3 feet.
Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

Forest thinning operations near Fallen Leaf Lake until July 1
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/30/2017 - 8:43pmWhole tree removal will take place near Fallen Leaf Campground for the next month as part of the U.S. Forest Service's healthy forest program in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
The public is being asked to avoid that area during operations due to hazardous conditions associated with heavy equipment, falling trees, limb removal and trees being cut into sections.
Work in this area will stop around July 1, 2017, and any unfinished work will resume after Labor Day.
The work area along Fallen Leaf Lake Road off of SR-89 could be hazardous even when work crews are not present so use caution.
Boating safety from the Coast Guard

All boaters and beach goers are encouraged to be aware of boat traffic, prepare for potential hazards and keep advised of weather changes through the National Weather Service. Winds are supposed to be calm on Lake Tahoe this weekend, one should always check.
Expect extra traffic on roads to and around Lake Tahoe this weekend

Permits cost $20 per cord, with a two-cord minimum purchase and a limit of 10 cords per household.

Hwy 395 to be closed Monday for roof installation
Submitted by paula on Fri, 05/12/2017 - 2:02pmHighway 395 in Minden may be closed for up to two hours on Monday, May 15 to allow for the installation of the roof over the old mill silos.
From 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., as a precautionary move, traffic is expected to be diverted as Miles Construction uses a crane to install the structure. Traffic will be diverted onto an alternative route so expect a slow down in the area.
Buckeye Road will also be affected and will be closed at Heybourne Road and traffic will be diverted starting at 9:00 a.m. into the Winhaven development.
Chain controls go up in Sierra as Winter Weather Advisory issued

South Lake Tahoe area rivers and creeks over banks, some flooding in Tahoe Keys

The extra water in the river has also led to slight flooding on Colorado Avenue in the Tahoe Keys.
Tahoe Roads launches new brand and improved website

California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has now included information on roads around the lake, including information from the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT).
The goals of the website are to:
- Educate the public on the benefits of the construction happening around the lake
- Keep the public and partners updated on project details and roadwork schedules
Some USFS campgrounds in Lake Tahoe opening May 12
Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/03/2017 - 2:10pmSnow is preventing some Lake Tahoe West Shore campgrounds from opening, but others are ready to go beginning May 12, 2017.
The West Shore campgrounds still have a large amount of snow at lake level which is causing the delay in their opening. Meeks Bay Campground will open on May 19, and Kaspian and William Kent campgrounds will open on June 2.
Fallen Leaf Campground will open May 12, but some sites will be closed due to wet conditions.

USFS announces West Shore fuels reduction project

The West Shore Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Fuels Reduction and Forest Health Project will treat approximately 4,875 acres extending from Emerald Bay to Burton Creek State Park.
South Lake Tahoe teachers show support for free and quality education for all students

South Lake Tahoe teachers joined in and greeted parents and students as they arrived for school Monday, displaying posters and letting students know they all had a right to quality and free public education, and asking all to take the pledge (as seen below).
Grading season begins in Lake Tahoe, but only if soil is ready

No grading can take place during times of precipitation, and if the project site is still covered in snow, saturated or muddy, all grading and soil disturbing activities must be suspended.

It's official: Wettest winter on record for Northern California
Submitted by paula on Thu, 04/13/2017 - 11:02amThose who live in the Sierra know its been a wet and snowy winter, but now the record books support what they've experienced over the past six months: It is now the wettest winter on record in the Northern California mountains.
Precipitation measured at eight stations from Lake Tahoe to Mt. Shasta surpassed to old record held for 35 years. In that winter of 1982-1983 there was 88.5 inches of of precipitation measured at the same eight station. Today's measurement was 89.7 inches.
Douglas County seeks feedback on social media messaging during storms

Caltrans project outlined to South Lake Tahoe community
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/12/2017 - 10:17pmFor the next three summers, Caltrans crews will be in town to work on their U.S. Highway 50 South Lake Tahoe Highway Improvement Project, and Caltrans spoke with locals Wednesday evening about what they could expect during the project which starts May 1, 2017 and should end by winter, 2019. This will be their last Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program (EIP) task to collect and treat stormwater runoff which accomplishes several other goals as well.
