Weather and snow conditions permitting, Lake Tahoe recreational facilities will soon be open! The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) announced today they will begin opening some spots in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Inspiration Point will be the first site to open on April 15, 2017. The Taylor Creek Visitor Center opens May 19 and will be staffed weekends only until Memorial Day weekend. The Tallac Historic Site parking area opens May 1 and will be staffed beginning Saturday, May 27.

The Republican Party’s decision on March 24 to pull the vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was met with disappointment and relief. While backers of the newly proposed legislation were disappointed that they could not find sufficient support, residents who depend on the Affordable Care Act’s medical protections and insurance options felt relief. Hope continues for a broad bipartisan approach to change this complex legislation resulting in improved coverage balanced with affordability for our citizens.

Kingsbury Grade (State Route 207) reopened at 4:30 p.m. Saturday after closing Friday afternoon to allow crews to remove a slide and remove trees and boulders.

Rockfall mitigation experts spent Saturday bringing down boulders from the top of a roadside slope on Kingsbury Grade. Heavy precipitation had loosened not only the boulders, but trees as well.

The roadway is now clear and traffic is moving from the Carson Valley to Lake Tahoe. Nevada Department of Transportion (NDOT) and their contractor Q&D Construction made repairs to an eroding roadside slope and extensive rockfall.

The Douglas County Board of Commissioners have declared a State of Emergency in preparation for the potential of flooding associated with spring runoff and for stormy conditions such as this weekend. . The declaration has been submitted to the State of Nevada and will allow regional partners to expedite mitigation efforts as well as speed up the delivery of resources required to more effectively respond to an emergency.

A late season atmospheric river will bring another significant precipitation event to the Sierra and western Nevada. Near saturated soils and a mostly ripe low to mid elevation snowpack will contribute to increased runoff. This will increase flood potential, especially along creeks and streams, Friday into Saturday. This event isn`t expected to be as strong as storms in January and February but is a significant precipitation event for April.

The winds have arrived in South Lake Tahoe, and three weather related warnings have come with them: wind, snow and flooding.

The typical see-saw weather pattern normal for South Lake Tahoe in Spring, continues this week.

A wind advisory has been issued for the basin from 5:00 a.m. Thursday, March 30 through the day until 8:00 p.m. Winds will increase through the day, coming from the west 20-30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph by early afternoon behind a passing cold front. Waves on Lake Tahoe are expected to be 2-4 feet with the highest waves on the eastern and southern shores.

Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

The winter of 2017 has been full of surprises with record amounts of rain and snow, but one surprise came in the mail by wait of an electric bill.

Many Liberty Utilities customers have noticed their January and February bills were higher than expected. Due to extreme weather, the utility company had to bill based on estimated billing as actual meter reads were impossible. For some customers, actual reads may not have occurred until March if a customer’s scheduled meter read was during the February winter storms.

The California Tahoe Conservancy, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, California State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service are planning on continuing prescribed fire operations March 27, depending on conditions.

If fire crews get the okay, operations will be near Tahoe City, Glenbrook, Round Hill, Kingsbury Grade, and South Lake Tahoe.

If conditions are favorable, California State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service may resume prescribed fire operations beginning today, March 16, 2017. Operations may take place near Tahoe City and Glenbrook and may continue as conditions allow.

On the schedule is the burning of 50 acres of hand piles at Logan Creek Drive and Highway 50 as well as 30 acres at Burton Creek State Park between North Tahoe High and Rocky Ridge Properties.

TODAY’S WEATHER (NWS GREATER LAKE TAHOE AREA): Expect Sunny Skies. Patchy freezing fog near Truckee in the morning. Highs: 56F to 66F. Light winds.

Just as it had during most of the 2017 high school ski season, the Tahoe Basin State Championships held in South Lake Tahoe happened in the midst of a major snow storm.

Both days of events were switched to Sierra-at-Tahoe who kept the lifts running long enough for the student athletes to finish the slalom (SL) and grand slalom (GS) races.

South Tahoe High's girls team came in first in the slalom and third in the grand slalom, and the boys team took third in both races.

Water conservation efforts in California have saved 2.51 million acre-feet of water since June of 2105. This is enough water to provide 6.24 million homes with water for a year, or almost one-third of the state's population.

Since state-mandated water restrictions have been in place, the cumulative statewide savings has been 22.5 percent, when compared with the previous 18-month period.

Since June 2015, the 817.9 billion gallons saved is enough water to supply more than 12.5 million people with water for a year has been saved at the state level.

I-80 just reopened at 2:15 p.m., but the remnants of the westbound traffic that came south to go through South Lake Tahoe and over Highway 50 remains. That situation combined with heavy snow, chain controls and a lot of skiers and riders in town to enjoy the resorts, has created a traffic issue on the south shore.

The City of South Lake Tahoe has advised motorists that it is currently taking drivers four hours to travel from the Y to Meyers, a drive that normally takes under ten minutes.

"Consider leaving tomorrow or this evening," the City released in a statement.
