Two Placerville area men arrested after high-speed chase in South Lake Tahoe

At 1:12 p.m., the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) was notified of a reckless driver on US50 near Heidi's Restaurant. The person who called it in said the car was a Lexus 4-door and it was heading west.
New partnership created to "Keep Tahoe Bears Wild"

El Dorado Hills man dies while swimming in Lake Tahoe Triathlon

Mark Combs called out for help from the water at 8:23 a.m., according to Sgt. Anthony Prencipe, public information officer with the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office (EDSO).. Rescue swimmers on personal watercraft responded to the location and retrieved Mark from underwater. Lifesaving attempts were made by emergency personal and Mark was later pronounced deceased according to Prencipe.
The buzz about yellowjacket season in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/28/2019 - 6:41pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Yellowjackets - they seem to appear whenever you sit down for your picnic lunch or other outside dining enjoyment in Lake Tahoe, especially in the months of July and August.
While the uninvited guests have some redeeming qualities they are predatory, sting pets and humans and are capable of stinging multiple times. Their aggressive behavior ruins many the outside activity. Yellowjackets are actually wasps but shouldn't be confused with other wasps, such as hornets and paper wasps. They are often mistakenly called "bees" (as in "meat bees").

Holiday traffic from South Lake Tahoe that heads west on Highway 50 over Echo Summit has been directed by apps like Waze and Google Maps to take side roads as the quickest route home. The redirected routes go through neighborhoods and block residents from their homes.
Disaster averted after fires left by careless campers doused in Lake Tahoe

there not been a quick response by the U.S. Forest Service-Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit and other firefighting agencies at two different spots on Monday.
Both fires look like they are a result of illegal campfires, one on the northwest end of Lake Tahoe near Watson Lake and the other south of the basin in Meiss Country.
Barton Foundation awards $50,000 to groups focused on community's health needs

A total of $50,000 was distributed among the groups to aid in their efforts to address the community’s most pressing health issues.
During the 2018 Barton Community Health Needs Assessment, the top health issues identified in the South Lake Tahoe community were access to care, mental health, and substance abuse.
Toxic algae tests underway on samples from South Lake Tahoe beach

The death of the dog came to the attention of Lahontan Regional Water Quality Board late Wednesday, August 21. The following day they were joined by the El Dorado County Environmental Health Department along the stretch of beach the dog's owner said they were at the previous Sunday. They spoke with the owner and retraced their steps that day.

State Route 89 (Placer County): Motorists can expect intermittent short delays on State Route 89 at Sugar Pine Point State Park in Tahoma from 6:30-9:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 24 and from 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, August 25 due to the Lake Tahoe Triathlon.
Applications accepted for Tahoe Paradise Park board opening

There is a five-person board for the park district and those interested in the open position can apply for the volunteer, unpaid position until September 16, 2019

DUI checkpoint in South Lake Tahoe/Meyers area Saturday
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/19/2019 - 7:21pmThere will be a DUI checkpoint in the unincorporated portion of El Dorado County on the South Shore Saturday, August 24 from 8:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) will be setting up at an undisclosed location.
The Driving Under the Influence (DUI) Sobriety Checkpoint will be staffed by a team of CHP officers which will be controlling traffic, evaluating driver’s sobriety, and hand out literature warning of the dangers of drinking and driving. Driver license checks will be conducted, and appropriate enforcement action will be taken.

Due to the alarming rates at which this is happening, the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors reached out to the California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara to explain the dire situation in the county.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County): Work continues on a $5.2 million project to upgrade metal beam guardrail and construct concrete barriers at 89 locations from the Red Hawk Undercrossing to 1.9 miles west of the junction with State Route 89 in Meyers. Completion is expected in spring 2020.
Deputies looking for driver who took a Jeep off road and got stuck in Trout Creek
Submitted by paula on Fri, 08/16/2019 - 9:01pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) is looking for the owner of a Jeep who decided to go off-roading in the Trout Creek meadow behind Lake Tahoe Community College.
On Friday afternoon, deputies and a tow company recovered the vehicle from the creek.
"Have you lost a Jeep somewhere in Trout Creek behind Lake Tahoe Community College? Some good citizens called EDSO to help you recover it. It is with us," the department posted on their Facebook page.
They are asking the owner to give them a call at 530.573.3300 to claim the vehicle.

Upon arrival, officers discovered that 23-year-old Henry Flores Rojas had allegedly used a baseball bat on the windows of a car where his ex-girlfriend and their one-year-old child were seeking safety.

A detective from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) happened to be in the parking lot of The Crossing Thursday afternoon when he observed what looked to be a theft in progress at the Big 5 Sporting Goods store.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District starts process of hiring new superintendent
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/14/2019 - 6:45pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Board of Trustees from the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) heard a presentation Tuesday about searching for the next superintendent.
LTUSD Superintendent Dr. James Tarwater submitted his resignation on June 21 after serving the South Lake Tahoe community since 2005. He gave the Board a one year notice, making his last day in June 2020.
16-acre fire along Highway 50 near Shingle Springs closed roadway Wednesday
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/14/2019 - 2:10pm7:00 p.m. Update: A fire along Highway 50 Wednesday burned 16 acres after being started when a truck towing a trailer caught fire after having a flat tire at 1:21 p.m. The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office evacuated some home in the area when winds took the flames from the highway in towards a neighborhood.
All residents have been allowed to go back home. Firefighters will stay at the scene overnight to patrol and watch for hotspots.
Dog kicked out of car on US50 - CHP Placerville to the rescue
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/12/2019 - 9:41pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is looking for the person who kicked a dog out of their car on US50 near the Greenstone exit on Sunday night.
CHP responded to the 6:30 p.m. call and Officer Merkel was able to rescue the dog from the highway before it was harmed.
A witness said they saw a vehicle slow down and speed off after kicking the dog out.
CHP Officer Merkel got there quickly.
State rejects ten-year extention of CalTahoe JPA contract

They have been providing these services through a Joint Powers Authority (JPA).

They are at a time in their lives when they need our “village” to be there for them without judgment, with kindness and compassion, and with the resources to be able to provide them the tools to be able to forge the future successfully.

Multi-agency response to the water and gas leak on Seneca Drive
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/08/2019 - 2:28pmA geyser of water and natural gas on Senaca Drive in Meyers on August 6 brought out a full response from South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD), Southwest Gas (SWG), Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) and El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office (EDSO).
STPUD responded to the call of a water leak and upon arrival found water gushing from a broken water main. They also smelled gas so called SWG and 911. LVFPD and EDSO secured the area and helped evacuate residents and divert water to minimize property damage.

Driver escapes after high speed pursuit from South Lake Tahoe to Zephyr Cove
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/06/2019 - 3:30pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A driver and his passenger escaped after leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase from the Heavenly Village area of South Lake Tahoe to Zephyr Cove, Nevada. They crashed their car into a guard rail and ran away.
On Sunday, August 4 an officer from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) attempted to make a traffic stop at 2:06 a.m. when the driver failed to yield and took off. A pursuit ensued into Douglas County, at times reaching high rates of speed. Six minutes later the suspect's car crashed into a guard rail on Highway 50 in Zephyr Cove.

While California Governor Gavin Newsom is busy pointing fingers, AB 1722 – an assembly bill based on science and focused on preventing gun violence – languishes in the Appropriations Committee.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As a follow-up to their "Prepare to Evacuate" community meeting, the Tahoe Neighborhoods Group is joining forces to help the Tahoe Resource Conservation District (TRCD) bring a “Neighborhood Leader Orientation" meeting to South Lake Tahoe.
On August 21 at the El Dorado County Library in South Lake Tahoe from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., TRCD will focus on what it means to be a “Fire Adapted Community” and how neighborhood leaders can organize and hold neighborhood events to ensure that homes and communities are prepared and fire safe if/when a fire occurs.

Small late night fire in Van Sickle Bi-State Park in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 08/02/2019 - 7:42amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An observant Harrah's Tahoe hotel guest helped firefighters attack a South Lake Tahoe fire late Thursday night, allowing them to catch it early and keep it small.
At 11:45 p.m., South Lake Tahoe emergency dispatch received a call about a fire in the area of the gondola. A guest on the hotel's 19th floor had seen fire and called it in.
Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD) went to the hotel to get the height advantage and better pinpoint where the fire had been seen while South Lake Tahoe Fire Department (SLTFD) headed to Van Sickle Bi-State Park.
Hazmat response to suspicious powder found in building behind Barton Hospital

The sequestered employees have been released and the back entrance of the hospital is now accessible to the public.
"Barton is thankful for the local agencies who collaborated with us to ensure the safety of staff and patients," said Mindi Befu, Barton's Director of Marketing, Public Relations & Patient Experience.

Kudos: Community supports growing tennis program
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/30/2019 - 2:56pmA record 246 people participated in the 36th Tahoe Tennis Classic at Zephyr Cove Park this past weekend. The four-day annual event brought people from throughout the United States to our area for competitive and fun tennis.
The tournament is the biggest fundraiser for the Zephyr Cove Tennis Club Foundation. The nonprofit, all-volunteer organization has a contract with Douglas County to operate the six courts. Responsibilities include resurfacing the courts, managing play, and providing instruction for all ages and abilities.

Conservancy to consider selling some "Asset Lands" for implementation of Meyers Area Plan
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/25/2019 - 1:14pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Most have seen the blue and gold placards attached to trees on lots around Lake Tahoe, signifying the California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) owns that piece of property.
CTC currently owns nearly 4,700 of these labeled parcels comprising around 6,500 acres around Lake Tahoe. Over 4,300 of these parcels are environmentally sensitive, leaving 331 parcels as "asset lands."
Parcel tax increases on upcoming Meyers Advisory Council meeting agenda

MEYERS, Calif. - During the next meeting of the Meyers Advisory Council some important issues for residents of El Dorado County will be covered, including presentations on a parcel tax hike for both Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) and the County.
On Monday, July 29 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., the Council will hold their meeting in the 2nd-floor conference room in the California Conservation Corps (CCC) Building in Meyers. It is open to the public.
Sales tax revenues increase in South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/23/2019 - 9:45amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The winter of 2019 was a good one for both South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County retailers, ski resorts, restaurants and others whose businesses collect sales tax, including online retailers selling goods in the area.
The first sales tax report for 2019 has been released, with $2,580,475 in gross receipts in South Lake Tahoe during Q4/Q1 and $11,976,387 in the unincorporated areas of El Dorado County. During the same two-quarter period the year before, tax revenues were $2,390,631 and $9,925,645 respectively.
One drowns in Lake Tahoe; another rescued
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/21/2019 - 12:08pm7/22/19 10:20 AM Update: The El Dorado County Sheriff's office said the man who died in Lake Tahoe Saturday was 27-years-old. He drowned after falling off of a watercraft near Lester Beach in South Lake Tahoe. He was not wearing a life vest.
The man's name and hometown will not be released until his family has been identified and notified of his death.
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A incident in Lake Tahoe Saturday evening resulted in one fatality and one rescue near Lester Beach and Rubicon Point, according to South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR).
