Eldorado Forest sees record number of illegal campfires with increased visitation

Despite large campaigns about fire restrictions and "pack it in pack it out," many visitors to the Eldorado National Forest are not acting responsibly.
Fire and law enforcement officers had another busy weekend contacting a record numbers of visitors about campfires they had made that are not allowed under the current fire restrictions in the Eldorado National Forest.
Three arrested in South Lake Tahoe on gun and theft charges
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/10/2020 - 9:58pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Three local residents were arrested on March 9 on various gun and theft charges after being found asleep in a vehicle on the grounds of Lake Tahoe Christian Fellowship.
At approximately 7:10 a.m., an alert officer from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) located a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of the church located at 3580 Blackwood Avenue. The vehicle was occupied by two men and a woman, all who appeared to be sleeping.

Grand Jury indicts four men at forefront of marijuana grows linked to El Dorado County deputy's killing

Minden man arrested after monthslong drug investigation
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/23/2019 - 7:32pmDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A months-long investigation into drug activity in Douglas County has resulted in the arrest of a Minden, Nevada man.
On Wednesday, October 16, 2019, members of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Street Enforcement Team (DCSET) served a search warrant at the Esther Way home of Robert Wilson. Inside they found almost $10,000 in cash, five pounds of Psilocybin Mushrooms, 21 firearms and a marijuana THC extraction lab with approximately seven pounds of a marijuana extract.
South Lake Tahoe man allegedly attacks car with bat: Inside is ex-girlfriend and baby

Upon arrival, officers discovered that 23-year-old Henry Flores Rojas had allegedly used a baseball bat on the windows of a car where his ex-girlfriend and their one-year-old child were seeking safety.
South Lake Tahoe man indicted on federal firearms and narcotics charges

Sixteen members and associates of a prison-based gang have been charged after a long-running investigation into drug trafficking and murders inside and outside of California’s prisons.
The EDC DA office's investigative division has the kind of highly trained and experienced detectives that are often called in to help with operations of this magnitude.

Douglas commissioners oppose Nevada gun background check law

Their reaction came after Governor Steve Sisolak signed SB 143, a bill that would require background checks on gun sales, on February 15, 2019.

Column: SLTPD and EDSO saves woman's life with arrest
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/13/2019 - 9:25amAfter a six-month investigation into drug transactions in the Lake Tahoe Basin, the El Dorado Sheriff's Department Narcotics Task Force executed search warrants at two locations in South Lake Tahoe on August 23, 2017. Large amounts of heroin, methamphetamine and approximately 12 firearms were seized in the search. Lynwood Towle, Shawn German, Melissa Griffis, Paul Ryan, and Krystal Long were all arrested, charged, and eventually pleaded guilty to various charges stemming from those searches.
Carson City Sheriff's Office arrest report contains Martinez-Guzman confession
Submitted by paula on Fri, 01/25/2019 - 11:58pmA probable cause arrest report released Friday by the Carson City Sheriff's Office on 19-year-old murder suspect Wilber Ernesto Martinez-Guzman contains a confession under Miranda.
According to the arrest report, Guzman told investigators that firearms stolen from the house of Jerry and Sherri David, the elderly South Reno couple found murdered in their home, were buried in the area of Sedge Road in East Carson City.
California man sentenced to 20 years in prison for international drug-trafficking conspiracy
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/16/2018 - 9:54pmA major drug ring that stretched from Mexico into El Dorado and Placer Counties and beyond was broken up with the arrest, conviction and sentencing of Francisco Felix, 45, of Mountain House on July 13, 2018.
Felix will be in prison for up to 20 years for his role in leading a large, multi-defendant drug-trafficking conspiracy that moved significant quantities of methamphetamine from Mexico into California and throughout the United States, and that controlled at least three large marijuana grows in the Central Valley of California, U.S. Attorney McGregor W. Scott announced.

Suicides on the rise across US in all states but Nevada
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/08/2018 - 9:04pmIt has been a very tough and tragic week, with the passing of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain, and because of their suicides and a report released by the CDC, NAMI ((National Alliance on Mental Illness) El Dorado County is seeing an increase in phone calls from the community.
Suicide rates have been rising in nearly every state, according to the latest Vital Signs report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is the 10th leading cause of death and is one of just three leading causes that are on the rise (behind diseases of the heart and Cerebrovascular diseases).
Replica firearms lead to school scare in El Dorado County
Submitted by paula on Thu, 04/26/2018 - 9:16pmMarina Middle School in El Dorado Hills went into a "Shelter in Place" status on April 25 after two adolescent boys were seen by an area resident pointing what she believed to be a black handgun at each other.
At 8:48 a.m., the resident advised the El Dorado Sheriff's Office (EDSO) the boys were seen on foot headed in an unknown direction. Due to the close proximity to the school, deputies briefed the district superintendent and vice principal.
As a precautionary measure the "Shelter in Place" was initiate as deputies continued to check surrounding neighborhoods.
South Lake Tahoe man facing charges of assaulting roommate with shotgun
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/14/2018 - 1:14pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) has arrested a 34-year-old local man on charges stemming from an incident March 12 where he is suspected of firing a shotgun at his roommate.
At about 10:00 p.m. Tuesday, SLTPD dispatch received a 911 call of a possible disturbance and gunshot in the 3700 block of Aspen Avenue. Officers arrived and attempted to located the source of the gunshot. The blocked off Aspen Avenue hear Wildwood Avenue in the process.
Juvenile arrested after allegedly making threats at South Tahoe Middle School
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/09/2018 - 5:19pmA South Tahoe Middle School student was arrested after allegedly making threats to bring a gun to the school's dance Friday night and harm students.
Officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) made contact with the young man at his home. The residence was searched and at this time it is believed that he did not have access to any firearms.
Due to the nature of the threats, and the number of other students who were placed in fear by them, the male juvenile was arrested and booked into the El Dorado County Juvenile Treatment Center on Criminal Threats, a felony.
Man convicted of attempted murder after shooting in Meyers
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/09/2018 - 3:46pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - On March 7, 2018 after a two week trial, a South Lake Tahoe jury convicted Ignacio Madrigal Arizaga of Galt, California of Attempted Murder; Shooting at an Occupied Vehicle; Illegal Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and, Illegal Possession of Ammo by a Convicted Felon.
He faces 41 years to life in state prison when he is sentenced on April 2, 2018.
Nearly two dozen arrested in City multi-agency drug sweep

The Carson City SET, with the assistance from multiple agencies to include, the Department of Public Safety Tri Net Narcotics task force, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigation Unit and the Reno Police Department Street Enforcement Team conducted the narcotics suppression operation targeting those using and selling narcotics in the Carson City area.
El Dorado County man sentenced after domestic violence conviction

criminal threats, domestic violence, multiple counts of assault with a firearm on a peace officer and special allegation(s) related to the use of a firearm and inflicting great bodily Injury on a peace officer in the line of duty.
Michael Allen Hoffer, 47, was sentenced twice, once for 45 years and 4 months and the other for consecutive 25 years to life.
Social media threat to South Tahoe High School unfounded

Man accused of threatening Carson City judge dies in prison
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/26/2017 - 4:05pmThe man accused of firing shots into the home of Carson City Judge John Tatro, setting up an explosive device outside the home and sending a threatening Christmas card has died, Carson City law officials confirm.
John Aston, 74, died Thursday morning, 6:25 a.m. in the infirmary at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center. News of his death has been confirmed by the Carson City Sheriff's Office.
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office Coroner responded. An autopsy will be scheduled per NRS 209.3815. Next of kin have been notified.
Detwiler Fire cause released; Over 81k acres burned and now 97% contained
Submitted by paula on Sat, 08/05/2017 - 3:04pmThe discharge of firearms on public lands has been determined the cause of Mariposa County's Detwiler Fire which has destroyed 63 homes, 67 minor structures and 1 commercial building since starting July 16, 2017.
21 other homes and buildings were damaged.
California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) investigators said specifics are still under investigation.
The Detwiler Fire has burned 81,826 acres and was 97 percent contained as of 7:00 a.m. Saturday, August 5.
Boys Scouts host 4th annual Car and Truck Show in Carson City

Participants can either pre-register or sign up the day of the event. Cost is $40. Each participant will get a T-shirt, one lunch meal ticket, and a dash plaque.
New rules for those attending American Century Golf in Lake Tahoe

The tournament takes place at Edgewood Tahoe July 11-16, 2017.
There is no bag check or camera check area as in the past, so if attempting to enter and items you are carrying are not allowed they will have to be returned to motel room, vehicles or disposed of.
No backpacks or large purses. All bags are subject to search.
No food. Small 12 oz. water bottle is ok.

Reno man charged in threats against Carson City judge after matching DNA confirmed

Carson City District Attorney Jason Woodbury announced Reno area resident Jason Aston, 74, is charged with fourth-degree arson, aggravated stalking and discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling. His bail is set at $250,000 cash.
Carson Valley Middle School student arrested for threatening to "shoot up the school"

At 7:00 p.m. Thursday, February 16, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office received a call after a concerned parent intercepted the threatening message sent to their child. Deputies responded to the Indian Hills residence of the reporting party and met with the parent to examine the phone in which the threat was received.
Police make arrest in South Lake Tahoe drive by shooting
Submitted by admin on Tue, 01/03/2017 - 4:25pmKevin Gonzales, an 18-year-old local man, has been arrested in connection with a drive by shooting that occurred on December 28 at the Pioneer Inn in South Lake Tahoe.
Gonzales was arrested two days later after an investigation by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) was launched into the shooting which took place at 10:00 p.m. at the motel, located on Pioneer Trail.
Curtis Ray Amacker 7/23/59 - 12/25/16
Submitted by paula on Wed, 12/28/2016 - 11:19pmCurt Amacker, 57, passed away on Sunday, December 25, 2016 at Barton Hospital in South Lake Tahoe.
Born July 23, 1959, in Carson City, Nevada, Curt lived in South Lake Tahoe his entire life, other than a short time spent attending tech school in Phoenix, Arizona.
Curt was an avid outdoorsman who loved the mountains, riding ATVs and Snowmobiles, shooting his prized firearms, and sitting around a bonfire visiting with his friends and family.
Felons arrested for shooting guns in Meyers
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/19/2016 - 10:03pmFour visitors to the South Shore were arrested by El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies on Friday night after they were caught shooting firearms on U.S. Forest Service land behind Tahoe Paradise Golf Course in Meyers.
On December 16, deputies responded to a call of shooting about 100 yards from the end of Lost Lane. Upon arrival they found four men, Alexander, Keoseng, Johlany and Yao Saechao with guns. Alexander and Keoseng are convicted felons from Stockton, Calif., and are prohibited from possessing firearms. All four were arrested and booked into the El Dorado County Jail.
Nevada legalizes marijuana, expands background checks

Backers of Question 1 said they wanted to close the loopholes in the current law by requiring background checks through a licensed gun dealer when most firearms change hands, including personal and online sales.

Stockton man arrested in SLT on weapons charges

Justin Wigley, 31, was arrested after officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department were investigating a case involving a gun being discharged at a motel in the 1100 block of Emerald Bay Road.
Douglas County deputies cleared in shooting death of Gardnerville man
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/17/2016 - 3:44pmAll six deputies involved in the July 2015 shooting of Mark Perkins have been cleared of any criminal wrongdoing according to the Douglas County District Attorney, Mark Jackson.
At 2:00 p.m. on July 30, Douglas County Sheriff's deputies responded to the Gardnerville Ranchos after receiving a call saying the 48-year-old Perkins was armed with multiple weapons and had threatened his wife and told her he was going to shoot a police officer and kill a neighbor.

Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Deputies Jose Guerra and Bruce Jacobsen graduated from the academy on Thursday, May 12 after attending the academy at the State of Nevada Stewart Training Facility in Carson City for four months.
Judge hands down sentence to man who killed bear in South Lake Tahoe

Gilbert Alan Wetenkamp pleaded no contest on March 11, 2016 to the misdemeanor charge of unlawfully taking of a bear.
Ex-firefighter from Placerville sent to jail for five years for arson
Submitted by paula on Tue, 02/23/2016 - 5:37pmBenjamin Cunha, 33, of Placerville, was sentenced Tuesday, February 23, 2016 to five years in prison for arson after being found guilty of setting at least 30 wildland fires during the summers of 2006 and 2007.
Two of these fires burned onto federal land. Cunha indicated that his motivation for setting the fires was to overcome boredom, to earn overtime pay for fighting the fires, and to impress his peers.
United States District Judge John A. Mendez also ordered Cunha to pay $246,862 in restitution to Cal Fire, his former employer.
South Lake Tahoe investigation leads to Georgetown drug bust
Submitted by paula on Sun, 02/14/2016 - 1:29pmAn investigation into the sales of drugs surrounding the murder of Dennis Wright, Jr. in South Lake Tahoe last month led the El Dorado County Sheriff SWAT team to Georgetown, Calif., on February 2, 2016 where they arrested 33-year-old Teveraz Lopez on drug charges.
Two separate investigations are currently ongoing surrounding the death of Wright, both a homicide investigation and a narcotics investigation according to EDSO Lt. Jim Byers.
Man killed after bringing 100 pounds of pot to South Lake Tahoe

Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/10/2015 - 5:31pmUndercover narcotics officers were able to purchase 170 grams of Heroin, 50 grams of Methamphetamine, and one handgun during an investigation into drug and gun runners trying to set up shop in Douglas County.
