Betty, so glad you found the information from last week’s article useful and your question is a great one. To answer your question with the most accuracy I obtained this list from the ASPCA Poison Control Center.

Halloween is often recognized as a holiday that offers just as much fun for adults as it does for children. Youngsters may look forward to a night of trick-or-treating, but many adults choose to partake in the festivities, too – oftentimes with alcohol included. While Halloween may be a spooky night, the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and California Highway Patrol (CHP) want to help ensure that it is also a safe one. If you plan on making alcohol a part of your celebrations this year, designating a sober driver or finding a safe ride home should be a top priority.

“Bread & Broth provides a great service to the local community and we’re happy to be a part of serving the South Lake Tahoe community,” said Linda Mueller. Linda and husband, Jim Mueller are the owners of Adventure Mountain Resort Lake Tahoe and they have been sponsoring a B&B “Adopt A Day of Nourishment (AAD)” for the last three years. Hosting a Monday evening meal has been a family and business affair where over the years their sons and Adventure Mountain Resort team members have volunteered at their sponsorship dinners.

Bread & Broth would like to thank the South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge #1632 for their Adopt A Day sponsorship of the Monday, October 12th evening dinner. Thanks to the Moose Lodge’s generous donation, the 91 folks who came for dinner were served baked salmon with orange sauce, spaghetti with red sauce, a mixed green salad, a lovely strawberry/cantaloupe salad and a wide assortment of desserts. Although heaping servings were doled out during the first serving at 4:00 p.m., 27 diners returned for the 5:00 p.m. “second” serving of this tasty and nutritious dinner.

The inaugural Winter Bazaar will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2015, at the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The event is open to the public and will feature stocking stuffers, gifts for Hanukkah and Christmas, and small prizes for attending. Food will be offered for sale by Seniors, Inc. The Senior Center is located at 3050 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

Are you, or someone you know, in need of emergency food supplies? The Food Bank of El Dorado County in partnership with California Emergency Food Link will be in South Lake Tahoe to host a Mobile Food Pantry Distribution on Wednesday, October 28, 2015, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. to bring food to those who need it most.

Local Freshies and Beyond Boarding are hosting the U.S. premier of the movie, Northern Grease, at South Lake Tahoe's Himmel Haus on Friday, October 23 at 8 p.m.

September 11 evokes a different meaning to South Lake Tahoe resident Christine O’Farrell. In 2002, on the one-year anniversary of the September 11 attacks, Christine was on the operating table at Barton Memorial Hospital facing a new threat: cancer.

Christine had been diagnosed with an aggressive case of breast cancer. At the time, she was 42 years old and working at Barton’s Home Health and Hospice for quality assurance and infection prevention. Her three children were 14, 12, and 9.

Join Live Violence Free and the Lake Tahoe Humane Society for "The Purple Paw Project" on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at Bijou Park.

There is an effect of domestic violence on the family's pets, and this new project will use the free Saturday event to inform the public on what this is. Pets, as are children, are the innocent victims.

Join them at the Kiwanis gazebo at Bijou Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for food, music, a pet photo booth, raffle prizes and dog training.

Pet food donations will be accepted.

There has been a slight dusting of snow over the highest peaks of the Sierra Nevada this week, a sign of the approaching winter season.

In order to prepare for the ski and snowboard season, Siera-at-Tahoe will hold their first job fair of the year on Tuesday, October 6 at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Applications for jobs in the food and beverage area will be accepted.

There will be a job fair at the resort November 7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for mountain operation jobs such as lift operators, guest services, host, ticket takers, and ski school.

Holly Greenough wasn't sure what to expect at Mt. Tallac High's first Family and Community Fair and Barbecue.

"I thought maybe five or six parents would come for our first year," said Greenough, the school's Director. Instead, 21 families and ten community members/groups participated.

"The kids were excited to bring their parents, and the parents were grateful," said Greenough.

The whole community is invited to help clean up Sierra-at-Tahoe during the 9th Annual Keep Sierra Clean Day on Sunday, October 11, 2015. Ride up the Nob Hill chairlift, sweep the mountain of trash and enjoy live music and free lunch on the Solstice Plaza.

In past years, thousands of pounds of trash has been cleared from the summer slopes, brought in by loyal passholders and employees along with community groups and organizations such as the Sierra Education Foundation, local Boy Scouts and West Slope high school ski and snowboard teams.

A local group has expanded to help accommodate the hundreds of food insecure school aged children in South Lake Tahoe. Many in the community are already familiar with Bread & Broth, a group of volunteers that serves hot food to those in need on Mondays and emergency bags of food.

Everyone hopes for a winter of big storms at Lake Tahoe. Recent media hype evokes images of a "Godzilla" El Niño. But for Tahoe, big storms come with big impacts to Lake clarity as snowmelt and stormwater runoff transport pollutants and fine sediment into the Lake.

So how do Tahoe communities protect the Lake from big storm events?

It is time once again for traditional South Lake Tahoe kick-off of the holiday season over the last 24 years, the Tahoe Toy Run.

Motorcycles full of toys for local youth in need will make their 25th run down Highway 50, this year from the airport to Sonney's BBQ Shack on October 3 starting at 10 a.m.

Bikers will start lining up the airport, which is located at 1901 Airport Road in South Lake Tahoe, at 10 a.m. for a 12 p.m. departure.

They will then proceed down Highway 50/Emerald Bay Road on the way to the party at Sonney's at 787 Emerald Bay Road.

The Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation once again presents their major fundraiser of the year, the Fall Food Fest, on Saturday, October 10, 2015 from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Lake Tahoe.

The popular event raises money for local schools.

The inaugural Tahoe Games Bike Night Series, presented by On Course Events, Tahoe Center for Orthopedics and the Lake Tahoe Golf Course will conclude with the final races of the season on Saturday, September 26.

These family-friendly x-country night bike races feature a custom illuminated course that runs through the Lake Tahoe Golf Course, over fairways, into the rough, through sand traps and over bridges with the occasional cart path. The course is approximately 3 miles per lap, with most classes riding 2 laps.

The South Tahoe High Booster Club would like to thank the restaurants who donated fabulous food for our teacher's Welcome Back to School luncheon.

Over 70 people enjoyed food donated by Getaway Cafe, MacDuffs Pub, Riva Grill, My Thai Cuisine and Samurai for the spread they put on.

The teachers are still talking about the great food!

Tallac Historic Site, Kiva Beach, Valhalla and the Taylor Creek Visitor Center will all be closed on Wednesday so the U.S. Forest Service can conduct pesticide treatments to reduce the risk of plague. The Pope-Baldwin Bike Trail will remain open, but signs will be posted where the trail crosses closed sites.

The gates to these areas will close on Tuesday evening, September 15 at 7 p.m. and likely reopen on Thursday morning, September 17.

With the devastating fires currently burning in California it brings to the forefront emergency preparedness.

September happens to be National Preparedness Month and El Dorado County's Public Health Preparedness and Response reminds residents to make an emergency communications plan for themselves and their families. Planning ahead will help protect families, neighborhoods and communities when emergencies and disasters arise.
