Fire fuels to be burned again next week around Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sat, 04/11/2015 - 11:23pmSeveral areas around the Lake Tahoe basin are slated to be burned starting Monday, April 13, as the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) continues prescribed burns.
Fire operations are scheduled in Blackwood Canyon between Tahoe City and Tahoma, on the south side of Meeks Bay, at Ski Run Boulevard near Heavenly and on the East Shore near Logan Creek Drive.
Operations may last through the next several weeks as conditions allow at the following locations:
Heavenly - 70.25 acres scheduled for fire operations
Logan Creek Drive - 20 acres scheduled for fire operations

Illegal and unattended campfires cause over 90 percent of wildfires in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Illegal campfire starts in blaze in Desolation Wilderness
Submitted by paula on Thu, 04/02/2015 - 9:13amAn illegal campfire at Granite Lake in Desolation Wilderness started a wildfire on Tuesday according to the U.S. Forest Service (USFS). With the lack of a deep snowpack and high winds in the area this week, the fire could have easily spread had it not been for the quick response by USFS firefighters.
Illegal and unattended campfires cause over 90 percent of wildfires in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Fire managers are concerned about the impact from illegal campfires as we are in our fourth year of drought and forest conditions are already as dry as they would be in June.
Highway 89 construction this summer worries business owners
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/01/2015 - 9:07pmWhile the summertime tourist to South Lake Tahoe should only be slightly affected, business owners along Highway 89 are worried about their livelihood with overnight road construction and blocked driveways.
During Thursday evening's Caltrans informational meeting at South Tahoe High, several owners of lodging properties, restaurants, sports and retail stores spoke about their concerns during the project which will last from mid-April to mid-October in 2015 and could even extend into the 2017 building season.

It doesn't matter if you love or hate Democratic Sen. Harry Reid to agree that the announcement of his retirement just dramatically reduced our state's political power in Washington D.C.
Nevada will go from a state whose issues were often at the center of debate because of Reid's position as minority leader to a state without a congressional power player in either party.

TRPA Board approves Heavenly's Epic Discovery project
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/27/2015 - 3:09pmHeavenly's Epic Discovery project passed their biggest hurdle Thursday as the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency's (TRPA) Governing Board unanimously approved the newest year-round recreational experience in South Lake Tahoe. With it, comes a wide variety of outdoor recreational opportunities for locals and visitors alike. Epic Discovery will include new zip lines, sky cycle tree canopy tours, a mountain bike park and trails, ropes courses, and interpretive and educational tours to teach visitors about the Lake Tahoe Region’s cultural and environmental resources.

Mild Weather allows Lake Tahoe recreation spots to open early
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/26/2015 - 6:25pmBeaches, parks, trailheads, campgrounds and popular Lake Tahoe viewing areas will start opening on April 1 for the 2015 season, almost two months ahead of schedule.
A mild winter has allowed the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) to start opening the popular areas but they won't be fully opened since they won't be fully staffed until closer to summer.

Local rivers may be eligible for inclusions in the National Wild and Scenic River system, and the Forest Service is asking for public comment as they evaluate the rivers in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
A webinar will be held on March 31, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. to 5 p.m. to explain the process being used for evaluation by the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU).
The LTBMU encourages public comment as part of the evaluation process, which is in response to objections raised during the LTBMU Land Management Plan revision.

Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/19/2015 - 8:28pmThe U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is asking for public input on a proposal to reconstruct the Kingsbury Stinger Trail near Kingsbury Grade. The Stinger Trail runs approximately 2.75 miles from Genoa Peak Road (Forest Road 14N32) to Terrace View Drive on lower Kingsbury Grade and is open to all-terrain vehicles, motorcycles and mountain bikes. The trail is very steep in places, is prone to erosion, crosses private land for approximately 280 feet on the lower segment and no longer meets current Forest Service standards for safety and sustainability.
Nevada lawmakers to feds: Pay up for Tahoe fire work

The Legislature earlier this month passed a joint resolution urging Congress to pay contractors who performed extensive fuels treatment work in the wake of Tahoe's disastrous Angora Fire of 2007.

Forest Service seeks input for Off-Highway Vehicle Grant

The OHMVR grant provides staffing for OHV education and information, law enforcement patrols, resource and use monitoring, protection of natural and cultural resources and maintenance of OHV trails and trailheads on the LTBMU.

While many state and local leaders would rather evict the federal agency from Utah, they don't feel the same way about Palma.
An easygoing leader who was able to navigate the fraught politics of public lands management in Utah, Palma is respected by environmentalists and oil and gas developers alike.

Depnding on weather conditions, South Shore operations will take place on Gardner Mountain near STHS and off of Gardner Street, in Christmas Valley, Luther Pass near Grass Lake, on Ski Run Blvd. near Heavenly Valley, on lower Kingsbury near Easy Street, Logan Creek Drive and southwest of Meeks Bay. On the Northern half, activity will be seen in the Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park north of Spooner Summmet off Hwy 28 and at Memorial Point near Sand Harbor.
Small turnout for Caltrans forum on Echo Summit Bridge project

The Echo Summit Bridge Replacement/Rehabilitation Project was created because of cracks, rusting reinforcing steel and concrete spalling on the existing bridge which was built in 1939.

Soup and salad bar opens in South Lake Tahoe

In September, South Tahoe Now announced that SUP Tahoe would be converted into Soup Tahoe during the non-summer months where stand up paddling isn't as popular.
"There were many more regulations than we first figured into our business plan," said owner Eddie Smith of the delay in opening. Smith and his wife, Kimberly, got the doors opened to Soup Tahoe last week.
Jeff Marsolais named new Forest Service Supervisor for Lake Tahoe Basin

Heavenly's Epic Project closer to reality; Final environmental report ready

The new project, located at Heavenly Mountain Resort, will expand their summer activities to include more canopy tours, hiking and biking trails as well as interpretive activities.
Sierra blaze that burned 40 homes coming under control after rain
Submitted by paula on Sun, 02/08/2015 - 7:30pmAided by rainfall, firefighters were taking control of a forest fire that destroyed about 40 homes in the Eastern Sierra near Mammoth Mountain.
Crews had the blaze about 65% contained by Sunday, nearly two days after a blaze whipped by winds tore into the towns of Swall Meadows and Paradise, with about 250 inhabitants. The towns are about 25 miles southeast of the Mammoth Mountain ski resort, near U.S. Highway 395.
The main problem now is more than four dozen downed power lines and damaged trees, making conditions too hazardous to lift mandatory evacuation orders in the area.

Lake Tahoe snowmobilers face fines if they cause resource damage
Submitted by paula on Thu, 02/05/2015 - 11:00pmA lack of the snow in the Sierra Nevada isn't just hurting water supplies, it's also hurting vegetation around popular snowmobiling routes.
This preventable problem is being seen around the lake where snowmobiles on too little snow creates ruts in the soil and crushes vegetation.
The U.S. Forest Service is asking snowmobilers to shift their activities to locations with adequate snow coverage, within permitted snowmobile areas. Snowmobile operators should avoid bare dirt and patchy snow and should not ride across streams or over small trees or brush.
Lake Tahoe Water Trail to receive $50,000 in upgrades

The Lake Tahoe Water Trail is the 72-mile scenic paddling route around the shore of Lake Tahoe. SBC plans to improve trail maps; increase wayfinding, trailhead signage, and outreach and education; launch a Lodge-to-Lodge Network; and establish a new Oversight Committee to develop a business plan to create a more sustainable program.

Forest Service adds additional prescribed burn in Emerald Bay area

They plan to start igniting 96 acres on Tuesday, January 27. The burn and down time is expected to take ten days.

The Forest Service needs to fill many temporary and seasonal positions are available in several areas including fire, fisheries, wildlife, botany, visitor services, roads and trails, recreation and wilderness, and vegetation and timber management as well as the Pathways summer internship.
There will be a job fair to help fill those jobs on January 27, 2015, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Forest Supervisor’s Office at 35 College Drive, South Lake Tahoe, Calif. 96150.
Popular program "Ski With a Ranger" returns to Heavenly Mountain Resort
Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/15/2015 - 9:00pmLearn about the role the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) plays in the management of ski areas and other keys areas on the Lake Tahoe environment during their Ski With a Ranger program beginning on Friday, January 16.
Tours begin at the top of the gondola at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. every Monday and Friday. There is also a Spanish version starting at 10:30 a.m. on Fridays beginning Friday, February 20, 2015.
They run until April 10, weather permitting.

Lake Tahoe area meadows to be restored by USFS

Amada Soriano Masellones 1935-2014
Submitted by paula on Sat, 01/03/2015 - 11:14pmAmada Soriano Masellones, age 79, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by loving family on Tuesday morning, December 30, 2014 following a long illness.
Amada was born June 9, 1935, in Calape, Bohol, Philippines to Jorge and Macra Soriano. She attended and graduated from Silos Vocational School of Dressmaking in the Philippines on February 14, 1953.

Hiking and exploring aren't just summer sports in Lake Tahoe and the Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA) will show you how to enjoy those activities as part of National Winter Trails Day on January 10.
They will guide snowshoers through the historic Van Sickle Bi-State Park after meeting at Explore Tahoe Urban Trailhead where participants will learn about the park.
Generation Green of South Lake Tahoe will join the leaders from TRTA as they guide people through the three mile round trip trek, highlighting a variety of winter, forest health, and fire ecology along the way.

Fire operations continue in the Lake Tahoe Basin
Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/01/2015 - 10:14pmThe Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and the U.S. Forest Service will continue prescribed fire operations this week on Kingsbury Grade near Buchanan Road, Ski Run Boulevard near Heavenly, Luther Pass and Spooner Summit.
Operations will last through the next several weeks as conditions allow.
