South Lake Tahoe Beaches and Parks Begin to Open
Submitted by paula on Mon, 04/14/2014 - 10:35amThe temperatures are rising in South Lake Tahoe and residents and visitors are spending more time outdoors.
The U.S. Forest Service announced Monday that they will be opening recreation areas early. Last year's warm temperatures in April and May brought out people who wanted to enjoy the parks and beaches, only to find them still closed.
Here is a list of opening dates:
Inspiration Point, Logan Shoals, Chimney Beach, and Secret Harbor are opening on April 21.
Sawmill Pond and the Sandpit OHV areas open May 1.
Baldwin Beach and Nevada Beach and Campground open May 9.

Starting Monday, April 7, they will be burning near Spooner Summit on the East Shore, in the Luther Pass Campground off of Highway 89 S near South Lake Tahoe, and on the west side of Highway 89 N near Tahoma on the West Shore.
Operations are ongoing and may continue through the week and next weekend if weather, staffing, and conditions allow.

3 Cars Stolen in 16 Hours in South Lake Tahoe; 3 Suspects Arrested
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/02/2014 - 9:50amThree Placerville 18 year olds have been arrested in connection with three auto thefts that took place in South Lake Tahoe between 7 p.m. March 31 and 11 a.m. April 1. The trio is also suspected in stealing contents from other cars as well.
Brian Barnes, Elija Kidwell and Sean Murphy were arrested and book into El Dorado County Jail on felony charges of auto theft, possession of stolen property and conspiracy for at least one of the auto thefts and to some of the property thefts.
Lakeside Inn and Casino Returns Cattle Grazing to Historic Lake Shore Meadow
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/31/2014 - 2:12pmApril 1, 2014 (Stateline, Nev.) -- Lakeside Inn and Casino announced the United States Forest Service would be processing a permit for livestock grazing in Rabe Meadow, land adjacent to the hotel/casino for the purpose of raising prime Angus beef for Brazilian Barbecue at its Latin Soul restaurant. Rabe Meadow has historically supported cattle grazing during summer periods on the shores of Lake Tahoe.

Possible locations include Slaughterhouse Canyon on the East Shore, the Luther Pass Campground off of Highway 89 near South Lake Tahoe, the west side of Highway 89 near Tahoma, and near D.L. Bliss State Park on the West Shore.

TRPA Applauds Senate Move on Lake Tahoe Restoration Bill

The legislation would reauthorize the Lake Tahoe Restoration Act, originally passed in 2000, which has helped advance one of the most comprehensive watershed restoration programs in the nation-the Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program, or EIP.
Prescribed Fire Operations Continue in Lake Tahoe This Week

In South Lake Tahoe, the prescribed burns will take place on the east side of Tahoe Mountain, the south side of Highway 89 near Camp Richardson, and off of North Upper Truckee Road in the Angora fire area south of Mule Deer Circle.
Busy Beavers at Lake Tahoe's Taylor Creek

South Lake Tahoe local John McDougall has been visiting the Taylor Creek area over the last two weeks, observing the beavers and capturing their actions on film. Even though beavers are nocturnal, the ones captured here are busy on their dam building during daylight hours.

Suspicious Fire in South Lake Tahoe Being Investigated
Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/30/2014 - 10:54amA Wednesday night house fire in South Lake Tahoe has turned into a criminal investigation.
South Lake Tahoe Police officers and fire fighters responded to a residential fire in the 1100 block of Long Valley Avenue at 6:10 pm. They found the home fully engulfed in flames with fire starting to spread to nearby trees, though they were able to contain the fire to the area of the burning home. It appears the house is likely to be a total loss.
The house has received the attention of the police and fire department prior to Wednesday night's fire.

Operations will take place on the South Shore in the Luther Pass Campground off of Highway 89 S, on the West Shore off of Bunker Drive near Tahoe City and off of Chalet Road near Alpine Meadows ski area, and on the East Shore off of Easy Street on Lower Kingsbury Grade.
Operations may continue through the weekend, weather, staffing, and conditions permitting.

Ski With a Ranger Program Returns to South Lake Tahoe

Everyone in invited to join them at Heavenly Mountain Resort on Mondays and Fridays at 10 am and 1 pm. The Ski With a Ranger tours begin at the top of the gondola ad last about one hour.
Participants must be intermediate level skiers/boarders or above and provide their own lift ticket. No reservations are required; attendance is on a first-come first-served basis.

Lake Tahoe Prescribed Fire Operations to Continue Near Luther Pass

All prescribed fire projects are conducted in accordance with an approved prescribed fire burn plan. Burn plans describe specific conditions under which operations are conducted including the weather, number of personnel, and opportunities to minimize smoke impacts. This information is used to decide when and where to burn.
Heavenly Opens the California Side on Saturday
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/20/2013 - 5:54pmHeavenly Mountain Resort will open the California side of the resort on Saturday, December 21, expanding open terrain to include Ridge Run, Patsy’s, Maggie’s, Skyline Trail, Sky Chute, and the beginner areas of the Enchanted Forest and DMZ near the California Main Lodge. With the opening of Skyline Trail and California Trail, guests will be able to ski and ride to and from the California side to the Nevada side and access top-to-bottom skiing and riding on the Nevada side. With the California opening, the resort will operate 19 lifts, accessing 17 trails and 13.5 miles of skiable terrain.

It was just a few short years ago, in the midst of the Great Recession, both public agencies and private companies throughout the basin were in the middle of layoffs, service reductions and unemployment hovering above 17%. Concerns regarding economic recovery were significant. Rather than buckling under, we buckled down, got things done and prepared for recovery.
Tahoe Winter Trek Program Begins in South Lake Tahoe

Local teachers may reserve a spot for their class beginning on Monday, December 16 by calling the Forest Service at 530-543-2694, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Winter Trek begins Tuesday, January 7, 2014, and continues through March 27, 2014, weather permitting. Field trips are generally three hours long and are offered on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Prescribed Burns on East Shore and Luther Pass Areas

Crews will begin burning a 29 acre unit across the highway from the Luther Pass overflow campground and will burn as much as weather and conditions allow. Operations may continue through the week. In addition, crews will begin prescribed fire operations on a small unit off of Highway 28 on the East Shore of Lake Tahoe. Crews will burn approximately two acres on the east side of the highway between Secret and Skunk harbors near Bliss Pond.
Incline Village Resident Wins Trip to Super Bowl

Megan Kasden spoke through tears this week when she answered the phone and found out she had won the Gene Upshaw Memorial Fund Super Bowl raffle. The prize is an all-expense paid trip for two to Super Bowl XLVIII at the Met Life Stadium. The raffle raised $30,000 for traumatic brain injury research and programs and services for cancer patients and families at the Gene Upshaw Memorial Tahoe Forest Cancer Center. The same center where Kasden’s husband, Gary had just completed a long series of chemotherapy treatments.

Crews will burn approximately five to 10 acres per day on the south side of Meeks Meadow near Meeks Bay Avenue. Weather and conditions permitting, operations will continue through the week and possibly the weekend. In addition, operations will continue on lower Kingsbury Grade near Meadow Lane. Crews have completed five acres and will continue to burn until they complete the 19 acre unit.
Christmas Tree Permits for Lake Tahoe Basin Sold Out!

Between the north and the south shores of the lake there were 2,500 permits to sell to those people wanted to cut down their tree on Forest Service land.

The U.S. Forest Service fuels management team announced that crews will burn about 10 acres per day on Lower Kingsbury near Meadow Lane, weather permitting. Operations are expected to continue through the weekend. In the Emerald Bay area near Inspiration Point, crews will burn approximately three acres over one or two days.

Heavenly's Proposal for Year Round, Non-Skiing Activities Under Review by Forest Service

Round Hill Pines Scheduled to Change Operators at End of 2013

The current lease is held by the Forvilly family and is set to expire on December 31, 2013. Frank Forvilly has operated Round Hill Pines since 1971 and just found out yesterday that they weren't awarded the new contract.
Forest Service proposes to relocate Zephyr Point Lookout

The lookout, which was determined to be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places in 1997, would be dismantled from its current location and reassembled at the new site.

Weather and conditions permitting, operations will take place near Glenridge Parkway at Meeks Bay and near Taylor Creek on Highway 89 across from the Sno-Park. The Meeks Bay unit total is 42 acres and crews may burn as much of the unit as possible. At the Taylor Creek unit, crews will burn 10 acres and both operations are likely to continue through the end of the week and possibly through the weekend.
Lake Tahoe Christmas Tree Permits Go On Sale November 18

This is the time of year that tree cutting permits go on sale, and they'll go quickly! Just 2,500 permits will be available to those wishing to cut down their own Christmas Tree in the Lake Tahoe basin this year. Available are a variety of pine, fir and cedar trees from designated cutting areas around the lake. The permits cost $10 each and available only on a first come, first serve basis starting on November 18, 2013. There is a two permit per family limit.

The total unit size is 30 acres. Fuels management crews may burn as much of the unit as possible, weather and conditions permitting. “Because of the recent snowfall, conditions allow our crews to carry out operations on larger units,” said Kit Bailey, Fire Management Officer with the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. Operations are likely to continue through the end of the week.
Season Draws to a Close For Forest Service Road Accessibility and Firewood Permits

Fuelwood permits are $20 per cord with a 2 cord minimum and a limit of 10 cords per household.
Rim Fire Finally 100% Contained
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/25/2013 - 3:29pmThe 402 square mile Rim Fire is now 100% contained, 69 days after it was started by an illegal campfire near Yosemite. The cost to put out this fire has cost $127.35 million to date, has destroyed 98 outbuildings, 11 homes and 3 businesses.
There are still 42 fire personnel on the scene to continue efforts to put out the fire. The potential for more growth is low and there is a 1000 acre pocket that still has the potential to burn.
Scientists Present Approach for Evaluating and Monitoring Lake Tahoe's Nearshore

Forest Service Moves Prescribed Burns from California to Nevada side of Lake Tahoe

Smoke will be visible from Highway 50.
Crews may begin prescribed fire operations this weekend, October 26 and 27, 2013 across U.S. Highway 50 from the Skyland subdivision. Weather and conditions permitting, crews will burn approximately one to five acres per day and expect to continue operations through the weekend and into next week.

Everyone is invited to check out progress on the Upper Truckee River Restoration Project in a U.S. Forest Service field trip on Friday, October 25, 2013 at 5 p.m.
The project will replace the existing stream channel with a new channel that is more stable and is connected to the adjacent floodplain, which will provide a better aquatic habitat, support a healthier meadow ecosystem, and reduce the amount of fine sediment that reaches Lake Tahoe.

Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/17/2013 - 8:07pmThe U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) is working to open many Forest Service-operated facilities and restore public services that had been suspended during the government shutdown, which ended October 17, 2013. “Realizing we’re near the end of our normal operating season in Lake Tahoe, we’re focusing our efforts on those sites that typically remain open for a few more weeks and are extremely popular with locals and visitors alike,” said Forest Supervisor Nancy Gibson. “We look forward to opening these and serving our local community once again.”
