South Lake Tahoe gas station attendant's murder focus of Cold Case Task Force

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Cold Case Task Force of the El Dorado County District Attorney's Office is seeking the public's assistance in solving the unsolved murder of South Lake Tahoe resident Manpreet Singh. Singh was the lone attendant on the night shift at U.S. Gas on August 6, 2013 when a gunman entered the store, shot and killed Singh.

A customer walked into the store that evening at 10:50 p.m. and called 911 to tell them Singh had been shot. Video from that night shows the gunman walk from Palmira Avenue and enter the store at 10:40 p.m.

Hundreds join in search for missing 5-year-old; Found safe after night in the woods

A 5-year-old boy was found safe and in good spirits Sunday morning after spending the night alone in El Dorado County.

On Saturday, two boys, ages 4 and 5 were camping and riding quads with their father when the dad's motorcycle broke down. The kids did not notice dad was no longer with them.

The 4-year-old was located immediately but the search for the older boy went into the night. Over 100 volunteers from 16 counties joined in the search on off-road highway vehicles, air support, K9 Teams and ground searchers and worked all night to locate the child.

South Lake Tahoe area law enforcement, agencies and safety personnel are preparing for a very busy holiday weekend, full of people coming to enjoy all sorts of outdoor activities. With a very high lake level, and overflowing rivers, caution and safety are urged to have a fabulous weekend in Lake Tahoe.

And they aren't only going to be dealing with water safety. Rules and regulations along the beaches will also be enforced for safety reasons.

Driver uses wrong pedal when parking at South Lake Tahoe motel

A female guest trying to park their rental car at the Best Western Station House Inn in South Lake Tahoe apparently hit the gas instead of the break on Wednesday, sending the car into a room.

There were no injuries in the single car accident. One person was in the vehicle.

A decorative post holding up the second floor balcony was broken, as was a guard fence and window.

Car severs gas meter on South Lake Tahoe home

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue is at a home on Chonokis Street this evening after the driver of a car hit the home's gas meter, shearing it completely off its base according to Battalion Chief Tim Spencer.

As of 7:00 p.m., SLTFR was at the scene, waiting for Southwest Gas to arrive to shut the gas off. In the meantime, the fire department was able to plugged the line temporarily.

Nobody was home in the neighboring properties so just one person was evacuated. They will remain out of their home unless Southwest arrives.

El Dorado County Sheriff looking for gas-masked bandit

A man wearing a hard hart and full respirator walked into two banks in El Dorado County on Tuesday afternoon, making off with money from one.

At about 4:30 p.m. on June 6, the suspect pulled up to the El Dorado Hills branch of Golden One Credit Union driving a white F150. He got out and entered the bank with a gun, wearing the hard hat and gas mask along with sunglasses and a reflective green vest. For an unknown reason he left the building as quickly as he entered.

Last Friday, I delivered to the Board of Supervisors and publicly released the County’s Recommended Budget. The 422-page document deserves some context.

Residents evacuated after gas leak found at South Lake Tahoe apartment complex

5/29/17 10:45 p.m. update: All of the evacuated residents are now back home after Southwest Gas crews were able to stop the leak and repair the broken main line. At this time those crews are going into each apartment and relighting pilot lights.

According to SLTFR Battalion Chief Jim Drennan the cause of the broken line is unknown. The main is located alongside the apartment's parking lot but the break occurred underground.

Demolition begins on South Lake Tahoe McDonald's

Demolition began Wednesday on the 40-year-old McDonald's building at the Y, making way for a new building that will not only be home to a smaller and more efficient fast food restaurant, but one that is also full of environmental improvements as well as an new alpine-look consistent with the new City design standards.

Suspected arrested for murder of El Dorado County man

5/12 Update: The victim in this homicide has been identified as 43-year-old David Franklin Meade, a resident of El Dorado. Meade and suspect Eriksen were known acquaintances and this was not a random incident.

The investigation lead El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies to a home located on Lindberg Avenue in Placerville where they suspected Eriksen was hiding. The Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team was deployed to the residence to take Eriksen into custody. Officers closed surrounding streets after the suspect barricaded himself in the home.

South Tahoe Board of Realtors 'Lunch and Learn' to focus on radon

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe Association of Realtors (STAOR) have invited the public to learn about radon, something that is prevalent in the Lake Tahoe basin due to the high amount of granite in the area. On Wednesday, April 26 from noon to 1:00 p.m., join STAOR in their board room at 2307 James Avenue and listen to a presentation by Jim Gorman of Tahoe Radon.

Jim is a licensed contractor and is certified by the National Radon Proficiency program. He will cover the potential risks this radioactive gas has and how to mitigate them through a safe environment.

Establishment of renewable energy and carbon emission goals on SLT Council agenda

The South Lake Tahoe City Council will vote Tuesday on adopting a resolution to use 100 percent renewable energy by the year 2030.

"This could be a historic moment for the community, as we would join a growing movement of communities taking control of their energy future to tackle climate change," said Devin Middlebrook, TRPA Sustainability Program Coordinator. "We expect a big crowd of supporters wearing white shirts and 100 percent stickers in solidarity."

Gas explosion destroys Kirkwood home

A gas explosion destroyed a home in Kirkwood on Friday, March 31. This was the second gas explosion at a home near the ski resort in a week. On March 25, a home suffered damage when a gas line caused another explosion.

The two homes are about a half mile away from each other and both explosions are under investigation according to authorities.

Nobody was home at Friday's explosion.

At this time, no other details are being released and it is unknown if the incidents are related.

Kirkwood is a community and ski resort about 35 miles south of South Lake Tahoe on SR-88.

Lake Valley Fire crews respond to Meyers roof collapse

Lake Valley Fire Department (LVFD) crews responded to a roof collapse off of Nahane Street Wednesday morning. The flat roof and deck collapsed over the garage of the Meyers area home had due to a heavy snow load.

A neighbor saw the damage March 22 and called it in, but they are unsure of when the incident actually occurred.

Crews immediately shut off the gas to the property and notified Liberty Utilities, Southwest Gas, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department and Building Department.

Sacramento area carjacking suspect causes Hwy 50 closure near Silver Fork

Highway 50 near Silver Fork was closed Tuesday morning as law enforcement apprehended a carjacking suspect who also sideswiped a vehicle along Highway 50.

According to CHP in Placerville, a man driving eastbound on Highway 50 east of Ice House Road noticed a car on the right shoulder of the road with a flat tire. As he passed the person in the stopped car they threw an unidentified object at his vehicle. ,

Draft 2017 Regional Transportation Plan released

Stateline, Nevada – The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) on Wednesday released its Draft 2017 Regional Transportation Plan. TRPA updates the long-term plan every four years as a blueprint to prioritize and guide investments that will improve Lake Tahoe’s transportation system over the next 20-plus years.

University of Nevada to hold radon awareness event at TRPA

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s Radon Education Program is offering free radon test kits and an educational presentation about radon on Thursday, March 2 at 6:00 p.m. at the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) offices.

Gas leak prompts evacuation of South Lake Tahoe Raley's at the Y

A gas leak behind the South Lake Tahoe Raley's at the Y prompted a temporary evacuation of the store Thursday evening.

The first call came in at 4:27 p.m. and South Lake Tahoe Fire and Police departments responded. A gas leak was suspected but the gas meter that services the grocery store was buried in 25-30 feet of snow. SLT Fire Battalion Chief Tim Spencer called in the City's Public Works department who brought a front loader that was able to dig through all of the snow.

Vacation rentals in South Lake Tahoe still divisive topic

The vacation home rental (VHR) businesses in South Lake Tahoe have joined together in an effort to address, not only issues residents have with their homes, but to address their relationship with those who control and vote on their regulations.

"Our biggest fear is that the City has changed the intent of the ordinance without the council approval," said Josh Priou, Director of Product Development at Lake Tahoe Accommodations and a member of SLTVRA, South Lake Tahoe Vacation Rental Alliance.

Important safety tips when navigating South Lake Tahoe roads during wet storm

The City of South Lake Tahoe’s Snow Removal crews have been working around the clock to clear snow on city roadways. The combination of the snow and rain mixture is casing roadways to flood. It is imperative to provide snow removal vehicles the right of way as they work to clear roadways as well as blocked drainage ways.

Follow these safety tips:
Do not drive through water that is too deep. “Turn around – don’t drown”

Do not try and cross the snow berm in the center lane. Wait until snow removal crews have cleared the center lane for crossing.

Family pets killed in early morning fire in Round Hill that displaces residents

1/1/17 update 3:20 p.m. - A local restaurant manager has been identified as one of the victims in the South Lake Tahoe New Year's fire that destroyed both sides of Round Hill duplex.

Joanna Janowicz, manager of Casey's, an American Cantina at the Round Hill mall, her five-year-old son and boyfriend were out to dinner when fire broke out in their home, destroying all of their belongings and killing their three pets.

Overnight shaking a sign that Lake Tahoe is earthquake country

People from the Central Valley of California to the middle of Nevada felt several earthquakes overnight, with the two largest recorded at 5.7 magnitude, followed by 73 other tremblors between midnight and 9:30 a.m. December 28, 2016.

Winter driving: Check road conditions, be prepared and take it slow

With the large number of accidents throughout the Lake Tahoe basin Friday, it is important that everyone remember the basic rules of driving on snow and ice, especially when so many people are on the road.

Slow and easy, don't follow the car in front of you too close, and paying attention are the basics. Driving patterns cannot be the same as if driving on dry pavement in lower, warmer elevations.

Longtime LTCC Trustee Dr. Wenck retires after 42 years on board

South Lake Tahoe - The year was 1974. Richard Nixon resigned as president, Patty Hearst was kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army, All in the Family and Sanford and Son were number one and two on the top TV show list, gas was 38 cents a gallon and Dr. Frederick “Fritz” Wenck became an elected Board of Trustees member for Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC).

Fast forward to 2016 and Dr. Wenck retired from the board.

SLTPD aiding in investigation of man involved in twenty-hour standoff in Cameron Park

A heavily armed 37-year-old man was shot early Friday morning after keeping law enforcement personnel at bay for twenty hours in Cameron Park.

A 911 call about a possible domestic violence situation in an apartment on La Canada Drive was received by the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office dispatch at 6:10 a.m. on Thursday, November 17. According to the reporting party, there was an armed man holding a woman and her baby against their will inside the apartment.

Five businesses cited for selling alcohol to minors in Douglas County

Five Douglas County businesses were recently cited for selling alcohol to minors.

On November 2, Douglas County Sheriff's Office visited 28 businesses with liquor licenses to determine if they were being compliant with state law and not selling to minors.

Wal-Mart North County, Maverick, World Market, Grocery Outlet and Lucky Discount Liquor all received citations for furnishing alcohol to people under the age of 21. The employees who sold the alcohol was also cited.

The following businesses were checked and they successfully passed the alcohol compliance check.
