Long summer of major road projects ahead for South Lake Tahoe

Get ready for the second of two seasons for South Lake Tahoe: Road Construction (the other being winter).

Caltrans will start their almost $57 million project along Highway 50 (US50) from the "Y" to Trout Creek Bridge on May 1, 2017.

The three-summer long project will collect and treat stormwater runoff as part of the Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program (EIP). It will also widen the roadway to provide six-foot shoulders for bike lanes, replace traffic signals, replace curb, gutter and sidewalks, and improve pavement cross slope. Curbs and driveways will comply with Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. Bus pullouts will be improved and widened to a minimum of ten feet wide so they pull off the main roadway.

A new traffic signal will be installed at the intersection of Lodi Avenue and US50. A right turn lane will be added for Tahoe Keys Blvd, as well as four street lights between Motel 6 and Grocery Outlet. The Lodi signal is being added due to the number of accidents at that intersection (six broadside vehicle accidents and pedestrian crossing accidents).

Caltrans is working with the City of South Lake Tahoe to incorporate improvements at Sierra Boulevard for a new signal and dual turn lanes.

Businesses affected by this project in South Lake Tahoe are invited to advertise for free on TahoeRoads.com to let people know they're open during construction. Those interested can fill out a request here: www.tahoeroads.com/Open_4_Business
