Chain controls up as first wave of storm hits Lake Tahoe

9:45 a.m. update- Chain controls over Echo Summit have been removed as rain starts to make its way into the Lake Tahoe Basin. Expect other controls to be dropped but always be prepared and log onto http://nvroads.com/ and http://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/ for the most up to date road information.

Chains controls just went up on Highway 50 over Echo Summit as the beginning of what is being described as a "major weather event" enters the Lake Tahoe Basin.

A winter weather advisory is posted for South Lake Tahoe until 10:00 p.m. Saturday. Snow is forecast until 10:00 a.m., then rain and snow between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., then rain after 1:00 p.m. High near 38. South wind 10 to 15 mph becoming north in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.
Saturday night, the temperatures will rise to around 46 by 5:00 a.m. South wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

SR207 Kingsbury Grade - NDOT got the road open on Friday, temporarily fixing a sinkhole. Chains or Snow Tires Required from Highway 50 to mile post 12.0 in Douglas County in Nevada.

Hwy 50 Echo Summit - Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four wheel / all wheel drive vehicles with snow treaded tires on all wheels from Meyers to Twin Bridges.

Hwy 50 Spooner Summit - Chains or Snow Tires Required from Glenbrook to Hwy 395

Hwy 89 - North is closed at Emerald Bay

Hwy 89 South - Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four wheel / all wheel drive vehicles with snow treaded tires on all wheels from Christmas Valley over Luther Pass.

Hwy 88 - Chains or Snow Tires Required from from mile post 6.1 in Alpine County to mile post 22.7 in Alpine County, then Chains Required, All Vehicles Except 4-Wheel Drive with Snow Tires to mile post 52.4 in Amador County.
