Sloan Gordon ~ 8.19.1973 - 5.18.2020

August 19, 1973 - May 18, 2020 - Sloan Michael Gordon signed off on a life lived to its very fullest on May 18, 2020. Though taken far too soon, Sloan managed to live 10 lives in the span of his 47 years, punctuated by adventure, mischief, and quality time with his family and friends.

Suicides on the rise in South Lake Tahoe during COVID-19 crisis

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During the months of March and April 2020 there were five suicides in South Lake Tahoe. That equals the total number of suicides in all of 2019 in the community, and one less than in 2018.

There were none in January or February before the coronavirus hit.

After a gangbuster start to the winter season, a lot of us in Tahoe are wondering where all the snow has gone. Sitting here at the end of February with snowpack numbers dwindling, snow lovers are chomping at the bit, waiting to see the storm track shift back our way.

Still, the mountains have been buzzing with activity as skiers and snowboarders race to the mountains to enjoy what natural snow we’ve received and are ever thankful for the assist from local resorts’ snowmaking operations.

Minden man arrested after monthslong drug investigation

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A months-long investigation into drug activity in Douglas County has resulted in the arrest of a Minden, Nevada man.

On Wednesday, October 16, 2019, members of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Street Enforcement Team (DCSET) served a search warrant at the Esther Way home of Robert Wilson. Inside they found almost $10,000 in cash, five pounds of Psilocybin Mushrooms, 21 firearms and a marijuana THC extraction lab with approximately seven pounds of a marijuana extract.

South Lake Tahoe man indicted on federal firearms and narcotics charges

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe man who led multiple law enforcement agencies on a high-speed pursuit in El Dorado County and Sacramento in May was indicted by a federal grand jury today on two counts.

Police pursuit of South Lake Tahoe man caught on film in Sacramento

1:00 PM UPDATE: More information has been released in the arrest of Christopher Wadstein in Sacramento. Police found almost a pound of methamphetamine in the fire after his truck burst into flames.

Wadstein is a long time South Lake Tahoe resident with arrests dating back to his teenage years. Lt. Shannon Laney said their first file on him was in 2001. His previous convictions range from drugs and vandalism to kidnapping and weapons
charges. He is also believed to be a skinhead white supremacist prison gang member according to SLTPD.

Drug money allegedly motivated man accused of murdering Gardnerville women, Reno couple

A Washoe County detective says alleged murderer Wilber Ernesto Martinez-Guzman told police he robbed and killed his elderly victims during a 10-day rampage in January because he needed money to buy methamphetamine to support his drug addiction, according to the Associated Press.

Wilber Ernesto Martinez-Guzman was arrested on Jan. 19 in connection with the four murders of Gardnerville woman Connie Koontz, 56, Gardnerville woman Sophia Renken, 74, and South Reno Couple Jerry and Sherry David, 81 and 80.

Douglas commissioners oppose Nevada gun background check law

Douglas County has made it clear to the State of Nevada they won't stand for any legislation that exceeds federal firearm transfer requirements. Their reaction came after Governor Steve Sisolak signed SB 143, a bill that would require background checks on gun sales, on February 15, 2019.

The journey started as South Lake Tahoe resident Ari Ramos touched the Atlantic Ocean and left Jacksonville, Florida on January 28, 2016, , and if all goes well it will end this February when she touches the Pacific Ocean at the Santa Monica Pier.

Murder charges filed against Martinez-Guzman; Timeline of crimes revealed

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Murder suspect Wilbur Ernesto Martinez-Guzman will be tried jointly in Reno, Nevada by both the Douglas County and Washoe County district attorneys in what could be a landmark case.

During a joint press conference Monday, the DAs from both counties outlined their case against Martinez-Guzam for the murders of Connie Koontz, Sophia Renken, Gerald David and Sharon David.

Carson City Sheriff's Office arrest report contains Martinez-Guzman confession

A probable cause arrest report released Friday by the Carson City Sheriff's Office on 19-year-old murder suspect Wilber Ernesto Martinez-Guzman contains a confession under Miranda.

According to the arrest report, Guzman told investigators that firearms stolen from the house of Jerry and Sherri David, the elderly South Reno couple found murdered in their home, were buried in the area of Sedge Road in East Carson City.

Vail resorts in Lake Tahoe prepare for November opening dates

With a drop in overnight temperatures, Heavenly and Northstar's snowmaking teams have fired up their snow guns to lay down a good base in time for their opening days before Thanksgiving.

They are working towards the following opening days: Friday, Nov. 16 at Heavenly and Northstar and Wednesday, Nov. 21 at Kirkwood.

Replica firearms lead to school scare in El Dorado County

Marina Middle School in El Dorado Hills went into a "Shelter in Place" status on April 25 after two adolescent boys were seen by an area resident pointing what she believed to be a black handgun at each other.

At 8:48 a.m., the resident advised the El Dorado Sheriff's Office (EDSO) the boys were seen on foot headed in an unknown direction. Due to the close proximity to the school, deputies briefed the district superintendent and vice principal.

As a precautionary measure the "Shelter in Place" was initiate as deputies continued to check surrounding neighborhoods.

Sierra House students learn about kindness on National Walkout Day

Sierra House Elementary School participated in National School Walkout Day by doing three acts of kindness.

"With K-5 grades we though anything more might not be appropriate," said Principal Karin Holmes.

The students and staff all had kindness cards (see attached) and did three random acts of kindness throughout the school day. As she put students on the bus at the end of the day Holmes said she asked each student how many they did, and many had more than three.

"Be the Change" the focus of South Tahoe High rally on National Walkout Day

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The student body, teachers, staff of South Tahoe High School and community members came together Wednesday to be part of the National School Walkout and March For Our Lives, events held across the country one month after 17 students died in Parkland, Florida when a fellow student opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Social media threat to South Tahoe High School unfounded

Law enforcement responded to a home in Meyers on Monday, January 15 after receiving a report about a tenth grade South Tahoe High School (STHS) student posting a possible threat on his Snapchat account about bringing a gun to school and shooting people.

A lengthy, multi-agency gang investigation in the Reno and Stockton areas led to the arrest of 23 people, including one correctional officer on Wednesday, April 12, 2017.

Lt. Brian Williams retiring after 30 years serving the South Lake Tahoe community

As he reflects back on 30 years in uniform for the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, Lt. Brian Williams knows the dates that will be forever etched into his memory. 12/29/1986, 6/10/1991, 1/29/1997, 10/25/2005 and 8/26/2009.

Just in time to wash grime off South Lake Tahoe cars, Sierra Suds opens

South Lake Tahoe, Calif. - Its been years in the making, and finally, on Monday, March 20, Sierra Suds Car Wash will be open to the public.

In the 1950's, the 23-unit Cedar Lodge was located at 2685 Lake Tahoe Blvd. The motel was eventually demolished and South Lake Tahoe dentist Dr. Jim Getzelman bought the property in hopes of developing it into a car wash.

"We’re trying the best to make this a very clean alternative to washing a car at home,” Getzelman said in March, 2008 of his plans to open the car wash in the fall of that year.

Felons arrested for shooting guns in Meyers

Four visitors to the South Shore were arrested by El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies on Friday night after they were caught shooting firearms on U.S. Forest Service land behind Tahoe Paradise Golf Course in Meyers.

On December 16, deputies responded to a call of shooting about 100 yards from the end of Lost Lane. Upon arrival they found four men, Alexander, Keoseng, Johlany and Yao Saechao with guns. Alexander and Keoseng are convicted felons from Stockton, Calif., and are prohibited from possessing firearms. All four were arrested and booked into the El Dorado County Jail.

November 11 commemorates the anniversary of the peace agreement that ended World War 1 in 1918. Historically, veterans are remembered in the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, the time the guns fell silent on 11/11/1918.

Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows set November opening date

The higher elevations saw a very small glimpse of winter this week as snow dusted the peaks around Lake Tahoe, but not too small to keep Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows from announcing their opening date for this winter.

They announced today that they'll open between November 11 and 18, earlier than their November 23 opening date last year. The resorts hosted the longest season in 2015-16 by staying open until May 30 with over 41 feet of cumulative snowfall.

Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows was voted 2016 Best Ski Resort in North America by USA Today and 10 Best Readers’ Choice.

"Bandaged Bandit" sought by FBI for four bank robberies

The man dubbed the "Bandaged Bandit" is being sought by the FBI in a string of armed bank robberies that started with the South Shore robbery of US Bank on June 29.

Three additional banks were robbed after the Stateline one.

Two banks in El Dorado Hills were robbed on July 1 and July 14, and another one in Folsom on July 15, all apparently by the same suspect who affixes bandages to his nose, chin and arms.

Public's help sought in Washoe County robbery where guns were stolen

The Washoe County Sheriff's Department is asking for the public's assistance in identifying two suspects who burlgarized a Mogul, Nevada home on Friday, June 10, stealing multiple weapons.

Nobody was home at the time, a fact that was verified by the suspects first knocking on the door. Entry was gained through a back door.

Both suspects are described as light-skinned males in their early-to mid-20s, driving a late 1990s to ealry 2000s Pontiac four-door sedan.

Anyone having information is asked to contact the Washoe County Sheriff's Detective's Office at 775-328-3320.

Busy weekend for SLTPD: Shooting, armed robbery, arson and motorcycle theft

One can tell summer is here with the increased number of calls into the South Lake Tahoe Police Department. If keeping drivers, pedestrians and cyclists safe weren’t enough, officers responded to several out of the usual type of calls this weekend.

Stockton man arrested in SLT on weapons charges

A Stockton, Calif., man was arrested in South Lake Tahoe on May 14 after allegedly being found with rifles modified to act like fully automatic machine guns, which is a felony.

Justin Wigley, 31, was arrested after officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department were investigating a case involving a gun being discharged at a motel in the 1100 block of Emerald Bay Road.

Fire destroys condos in Tahoe Keys

5/4/16 11:00 a.m. update: The fire that swept through a Tahoe Keys condo complext on Tuesday caused an estimated $3 million in damage. Seven of the units suffered significant damage and a few other units in the surrounding condominiums have had some water and/or smoke damage. Firefighters arrived after receiving the 1:48 p.m. 911 call, and the fire was contained at approximately 4:10 p.m. Fire fighting personnel remained on the scene until 9:00 p.m.

Burglary suspects arrested after stolen guns found in car

Deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) responded to a burglary in progress call in the 1300 block of Cedar Creek Circle in the Gardnerville Ranchos at 3:20 a.m. on April 8.

A homeowner had found an unknown male in his garage, claiming a friend of his was in need of medical attention.

DCSO said the male matched the description of a similar incident in the neighborhood, one where the suspect(s) weren't able to get into the garage or home.

Judge hands down sentence to man who killed bear in South Lake Tahoe

"These are always tough cases," said El Dorado County Judge Suzanne Kingsbury Friday as she handed down an unexpected sentence to the 78-year-old man who killed a bear near his South Lake Tahoe home on July 10, 2015.

Gilbert Alan Wetenkamp pleaded no contest on March 11, 2016 to the misdemeanor charge of unlawfully taking of a bear.

Three in custody in connection with fatal Carson City shooting

UPDATE 2:00 p.m. - Three young adults were taken into custody Monday morning in connection with the fatal shooting of a young man over a marijuana deal near a park in north Carson City, Sheriff Ken Furlong said.

The three — two men and a woman — were arrested without incident by Carson City SWAT at an apartment complex on Fifth Street near Harbin Street. The three came out following demands by SWAT to surrender after investigators learned they had been hiding inside a residence.

Stabbing at Halloween party in South Lake Tahoe

Halloween night was a busy one for the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD). Just as they were handling the arrest of seven people that were found with bandanas over their faces and guns and drugs in their car, officers were called to the scene of a stabbing.

While attending a party at a Silverwood Avenue vacation rental, 21-year-old Josh Boyer of South Lake Tahoe was stabbed multiple times during a fight with several other party attendees.

Eight men indicted for manufacturing and selling rifles illegally

A federal grand jury returned a 70-count indictment today against eight men, charging them with various firearms offenses involving manufacturing and dealing firearms without a license, United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner and ATF Special Agent in Charge Jill A. Snyder announced.

Thousands participate in IRONMAN Lake Tahoe

Almost 2,500 athletes from around the world experienced a Lake Tahoe many will never know. A 2.4 miles swim in the lake was followed by a 112 mile bike ride and capped off with a 26.2 mile run.

Emerging from the pack as the overall winner was Gregory Lindquist, an attorney from Boulder, CO who competes in the Men's 30-34 age group. He finished in 9 hrs 39 minutes and 23 seconds. After hours of competition, second place finisher Ryan Linden was just 29 seconds behind. Linden is from Washington, MI and is also in the 30-34 group.

South Lake Tahoe K9 officers sworn in during ceremony

The South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting on Tuesday was taken over by the dogs. After Lisa Maloof handed over a check to cover the purchase and care for Ricci, three new canine officers for the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) were sworn in.

Ricci, a 22-month-old Belgian Malinois from Holland, was joined by Tara, also a Belgian Malinois from Holland, and Quatro, a German Shepherd from Slovakia, as the newest members of SLTPD's K9 team.

Forests grapple with 8,500 gun incidents

Perched around a secluded campfire in the Rocky Mountains, Glenn Martin jerked forward, said, "Ow," and died. The wayward bullet that struck him in the national forest has campers and other users calling for changes in recreational shooting policy.

Martin, 60, died July 3 in the Pike & San Isabel National Forest, 30 miles southwest of Denver. The 3.1-million-acre forest holds the record for the most gun-related violations reported in the country, a review of federal records by the USA TODAY Media Network shows.

Gang sweep in El Dorado County

Four people were arrested earlier this week in El Dorado County when the El Dorado Gang Enforcement Detail (EDGE) contacted several gang members at their homes.

El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, El Dorado County Probation, El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office, and the South Lake Tahoe Police Department participated in the sweep on May 18.
