Thousands participate in IRONMAN Lake Tahoe

Almost 2,500 athletes from around the world experienced a Lake Tahoe many will never know. A 2.4 miles swim in the lake was followed by a 112 mile bike ride and capped off with a 26.2 mile run.

Emerging from the pack as the overall winner was Gregory Lindquist, an attorney from Boulder, CO who competes in the Men's 30-34 age group. He finished in 9 hrs 39 minutes and 23 seconds. After hours of competition, second place finisher Ryan Linden was just 29 seconds behind. Linden is from Washington, MI and is also in the 30-34 group.

Sonja Wieck led all women athletes with her time of 10:28:55. She is from Greenwood Village, CO and raced in the Women's 35-39 age group.

Winner of age divisions:

Dean Discher, a firefighter from Sunnyvale, CA came in first in the Men's 45-49 age category with a time of 9:46:56.

BJ Christenson from North Salt Lake, UT won the Men's 35-39 division with a time of 9:49:25.

Marc Rosello from Salt Lake City, UT won the Men's 40-44 age division with a time of 9:5:15.

Timothy Livolsi, an investment banker from New York, NY had a time of 10:04:24 which led all competitors in the Men's 25-29 age group.

Matthew Appleby, a student from Palo Alto, CA won the Men's 18-24 division with his time of 10:17:44.

The Men's 55-59 age group was won by Kevin Nugent from Fair Oaks, CA. He completed in 10:46:09.

Cologne Germany's Stephan Schug had a time of 10:55:28, winning him tops in the Men's 50-54 group.

This was the third year for the IRONMAN in Lake Tahoe but actually just the second time the race was held. In 2014 the race was canceled just moments before the start guns were shot off due to unhealthy air conditions due to the King Fire.
