The South Shore community members have big hearts! I wanted to send my congratulations to the organizers and participants at the St. Baldrick’s Foundation fund raiser on Friday, February 27th at the Ice Arena in South Lake Tahoe. What a fantastic event for a foundation with the goal to “Conquer Childhood Cancers.” Thank you!

South Lake Tahoe shaves heads to raise money

The floor of the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena resembled a large hair salon on Friday as almost 100 people, young and old, male and female, had their heads shaved for childhood cancer research. The 4th annual St. Baldrick's fundraiser has raised over $55,000 so far in 2015, and donations are still being accepted.

Christy Smith started the local St. Baldrick's event in 2011 in honor of her grandson, South Tahoe High junior Bailey Johnson. Bailey was a four time Stage 4 cancer survivor by the time he was 5.

Snow welcomed in South Lake Tahoe

After weeks of spring-like conditions on the slopes, several inches of snow greeted skiers and boarders Saturday morning as a storm passed through Lake Tahoe.

Heavenly Mountain Resort received 6"-8" of new snow, while Sierra-at-Tahoe and Kirkwood both reported 7" overnight.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory which will last until 8 p.m. on Saturday. During the day another 1" to 2" of snow is expected with 2" to 4" at elevations above 7,000 ft.

There is a 40% chance of snow on Monday for up to 2".

Forest Service resumes fire operations at a dozen locations around Lake Tahoe

Joint fire operations by the Nevada Division of Forestry and U.S. Forest Service are resuming in the Lake Tahoe area.

Depnding on weather conditions, South Shore operations will take place on Gardner Mountain near STHS and off of Gardner Street, in Christmas Valley, Luther Pass near Grass Lake, on Ski Run Blvd. near Heavenly Valley, on lower Kingsbury near Easy Street, Logan Creek Drive and southwest of Meeks Bay. On the Northern half, activity will be seen in the Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park north of Spooner Summmet off Hwy 28 and at Memorial Point near Sand Harbor.

Heavenly's Epic Discovery Project gets closer to reality

Heavenly Mountain Resort added summertime activities to the top of the gondola last summer but that was only the beginning if the Epic Discovery Project gets approval from the necessary agencies.

Volunteers needed for Amgen Tour's South Lake Tahoe competition

When the women competing on the Amgen Tour of California make their two-day stop in South Lake Tahoe, hundreds of local volunteers will be there to make sure the even is successful.

The two Lake Tahoe stages cover a total of 124 miles with the first on Friday, May 8, circumnavigating the Lake; the second is two-laps through South Lake Tahoe and Meyers, Calif., the town seven miles west of South Shore on Saturday, May 9.

K-Tahoe radio gets new home, new management and some new staff

K-Tahoe Radio of South Lake Tahoe started off the year by moving from their old offices in the Heavenly Village into a new home located at 965 Tahoe Keys Boulevard. Not only did they get a new home, new management as part of NWBB, Inc, they also add a new Sales and Special Project Manager, Dennis Poarch.

South Lake Tahoe to be start and finish line for Amgen Tour women's race

Top women's cycling teams from around the world will converge on South Lake Tahoe for the Amgen Tour of California Women's Race title May 8-9. Fourteen teams will take part in the three stage cycling competition which will have both start and finish lines at Heavenly Mountain Resort's California Main Lodge

The race is sanctioned by Union Cycliste International, denoting the highest level for a non-World Cup event.

Flash mob to bring awareness to domestic violence being held Saturday

Men, women and children have been practicing for the big flash mob on Saturday in South Lake Tahoe which is being held to bring awareness to domestic violence.

The "One Billion Rising Revolution" is occurring around the world on February 14, a large mass action to end violence against women. Originally held o Valentine's Day in 2012, the movement is bringing awareness to the staggering statistics that one in three women will be raped or beaten during her lifetime. with the world population at seven billion, this adds up toe more than one billion women and girls affected.

Prescribed fire operations continue next week around Lake Tahoe

Several different areas around the Lake Tahoe basin have been tapped for continued fire operations.

Over 700 acres will be burned north of Tahoma near Elizabeth Drive, southwest of Meeks Bay, on Gardner Mountain near South Tahoe High School and Gardner Street, Christmas Valley, Luther Pass near Grass Lake, and Ski Run Boulevard near Heavenly. On the East Shore, operations may take place near Logan Creek Drive and off Highway 28 north of Spooner Summit.

Operations will last through the next several weeks as conditions allow.

Heavenly's Epic Project closer to reality; Final environmental report ready

The final environmental impact report on Heavenly Mountain Resort's Epic Discovery Project has been completed and is now ready for public review. The new project, located at Heavenly Mountain Resort, will expand their summer activities to include more canopy tours, hiking and biking trails as well as interpretive activities.

Almost 4" of rain in South Lake Tahoe; Ski Resorts get help

Even though snowfall in South Lake Tahoe was minimal during the most recent storm which is heading out of the region Monday evening, local ski resorts are reporting decent numbers.

It is still snowing at some resorts, but currently Sierra at Tahoe is reporting 20" of snow out of the storm, 16" reported at Heavenly Mountain Resort and Kirkwood is listing 18" of fresh powder.

Lake Tahoe receives much needed rain and snow; more expected

Lake Tahoe has received much needed rain and snow from a wet Pacific storm on both Friday and Saturday, while more is expected late Sunday afternoon.

Heavenly Mountain Resort received 4-8” of new snow overnight Friday and opened two additional trails on Saturday. Sierra at Tahoe has received 10" of new snow while Kirkwood reports 9" of fresh snow. The big winner of this storm, so far, is Mt. Rose Ski Resort who are reporting two feet of new snow.

A winter weather advisory is in effect in Lake Tahoe from 4 p.m. Sunday through 4 p.m. Monday.

Lake Tahoe fire operations will continue next week

Over 700 more acres of slash pile still remain to be burned around the Lake Tahoe Basin as part of the California Tahoe Conservancy, Nevada Division of Forestry and U.S. Forest Service fire operations.

Lake Tahoe snowmobilers face fines if they cause resource damage

A lack of the snow in the Sierra Nevada isn't just hurting water supplies, it's also hurting vegetation around popular snowmobiling routes.

This preventable problem is being seen around the lake where snowmobiles on too little snow creates ruts in the soil and crushes vegetation.

The U.S. Forest Service is asking snowmobilers to shift their activities to locations with adequate snow coverage, within permitted snowmobile areas. Snowmobile operators should avoid bare dirt and patchy snow and should not ride across streams or over small trees or brush.

Tahoe Chamber turns 60; Special celebration planned

The date was February 17, 1955. The City of South Lake Tahoe had yet to be incorporated (that happened ten years later). Bill Harrah has just purchased George's Getaway Club for $500,000 and Chris Kuraisa purchased Bijou Ski Area for $1,950 and moved lift operations up the hill and renamed it Heavenly Valley. The number one song was "Sincerely" by the McGuire Sisters.

February 17, 1955 was also the day that the original Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce was incorporated.

Winter wonderland at Heavenly Mountain Resort

The word of the day: Pogonip.

That is what gave the top of South Lake Tahoe's Heavenly Mountain Resort the look of winter and fresh snow on Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, a cloud deck around 8,000-9,000 feet was in place most of the night and the supercooled liquid droplets froze on the branches becoming a thick coating of frost.

Heavenly opens new terrain for holiday weekend

Vail Resorts announced the opening of the Terrain Park and Mombo Trail just in time for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend, one of the biggest winter weekends in South Lake Tahoe.

Groove Park is Heavenly’s most popular progression park, providing an ideal learning environment for beginners with a variety of features including five rails, one bonk and two jumps.

California State Parks, the Nevada Division of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service will continue prescribed fire operations on Tuesday, January 20, 2015. Operations may take place near Tahoe City on Highway 28 between Rocky Ridge and Lake Forest, near Emerald Bay at Eagle Point Campground, the Boat Camp and behind Vikingsholm, Fallen Leaf Lake, Ski Run Boulevard near Heavenly, north of Spooner Summit, and Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park near Sand Harbor.

Over 400 acres will be burned as fire operations continue over the next several weeks.

968 Hotel is only South Lake Tahoe hotel featured on Travel Channel series

“Hotel Showdown” squares off four different hotels against one another in a
winner-take-all competition. Representatives from the competing hotels spend the night at each other’s property, and with an exacting eye for detail, award points for every aspect of their experience. The highest-rated hotel wins a coveted $25,000.

The hour long episode featuring South Lake Tahoe’s 968 Park Hotel is titled ”Cat’s Out of the Bag with a Gun Show” and premieres Tuesday, January 27 at 9:00 p.m. PST.

Popular program "Ski With a Ranger" returns to Heavenly Mountain Resort

Learn about the role the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) plays in the management of ski areas and other keys areas on the Lake Tahoe environment during their Ski With a Ranger program beginning on Friday, January 16.

Tours begin at the top of the gondola at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. every Monday and Friday. There is also a Spanish version starting at 10:30 a.m. on Fridays beginning Friday, February 20, 2015.

They run until April 10, weather permitting.

Local favorite McP's reopens in new South Lake Tahoe location

There was no "open" sign in front nor was there any announcement that Wednesday would be the opening day for the new McP's Taphouse in the Stateline area of South Lake Tahoe. Yet, the bar was packed and the outside seating was starting to fill up by late afternoon.

Pete Joseph and business partner, former Navy Seal Greg McPartlin, put a lot of work into the 6,000 square foot found building at the end of the new Chateau and across the street from Harveys.

South Lake Tahoe not immune from fake vacation rental scams

Imagine packing up the car and heading up to South Lake Tahoe to enjoy a week at the large vacation home you just rented, only to find out that the house isn't yours to use when you arrive.

That scenario happened over the recent holiday when not one, not two, but four different groups thought they rented a home on Bonita Road near Heavenly Mountain Resort. All of the groups found a home for rent on Craigslist, a popular website used for buying, selling and renting.

North Lake Tahoe Freestyle skier has first World Cup win

USSA - Veteran K.C. Oakley's started her day learning she was going to World Championships next week. It ended with her first career World Cup win, throwing down a stunning win to upset Canada's Dufur-Lapointe sisters with a huge three-point win in front of a packed house at Deer Valley Resort. Patrick Deneen (Cle Elum, WA) scored his first podium of the season finishing third behind Canada's Mikael Kingsbury.

Heavenly able to open Olympic Express; 18 lifts now open

Heavenly Mountain Resort opened Olympic Express on Friday, giving skiers and boarders access to upper Olympic Downhill run. The resort is currently operating 18 lifts, accessing 25 trails, and has three access points, including the Heavenly Gondola at Heavenly Village, Stagecoach Lodge in Nevada, and California Lodge off of Ski Run Blvd.

The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and the U.S. Forest Service will continue prescribed fire operations this week on Kingsbury Grade near Buchanan Road, Ski Run Boulevard near Heavenly, Luther Pass and Spooner Summit.

Operations will last through the next several weeks as conditions allow.

Heavenly receives 11" to 14" of snow; California Base to open

Heavenly Mountain Resort received 11-14” of new snow in the last 24 hours, allowing the resort to expand terrain and open the California side of the mountain on New Year’s Eve, Wednesday, December 31.

Heavenly will now offer three access points to the mountain, including the Heavenly Gondola at Heavenly Village, Stagecoach Lodge in Nevada, and California Lodge off of Ski Run Blvd. With the extra two mountain access points now open, the heavy crowds that have been at the Gondola all week should dissipate.

Crowds flock to South Lake Tahoe; Heavenly opens Stagecoach

If you have driven anywhere in South Lake Tahoe this week, you'll know that droves of visitors have decided to come to town for the holidays. With both Christmas and New Years Day on a Thursday many have made their visit a four or five-day long weekend.

Highway 50 from Meyers to Camino has seen heavy traffic in both directions. According to travelers, Sno-Parks at Strawberry and near Echo Summit caused traffic to come to a halt as far away as Kyburz as dozens of cars lining both sides of the highway.

Time for teachers to register for USFS WInter Trek program

Each winter, groups of students participate in the US Forest Service's Winter Trek Program in South Lake Tahoe.

Skiers still waiting for the Big Storm

Even though Mother Nature has been blessing the state of California with plenty of rain, the Sierra Nevada are still in need of a big snow storm to start their way out the drought.

Rain and snow mix in South Lake Tahoe all day Friday has yet to bring in measurable snowfall but snow is still expected through Saturday so there is still a chance.

Sealed With A Kiss in South Lake Tahoe gives back to the community

In true holiday spirit, Sealed With A Kiss (SWAK) of South Lake Tahoe continued their annual tradition of giving away new clothing and accessories to the women and children of Live Violence Free and Sierra Foster Families.

Each year, during Tahoe Douglas Rotary's Christmas Party for local families, SWAK owner Jana Walker Spano and her team bring racks full of clothing, make-up and accessories to the event. Each mother from Live Violence Free than gets to pick items from the racks. SWAK also gave children toys and clothing this year as well.

Time to get your Santa on and run in the annual South Lake Tahoe Santa Run! Grab your Santa suits and hats and enjoy a 1.3 mile run up Ski Run Blvd from Blue Angel Cafe to Himmel Haus.

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation (HSSF) is holding their annual Santa Run on Sunday, December 21 at 4:00 p.m., rain or snow. They will be raising funds for the HSSF Scholarship Fund wil the help of Himmel Haus, Blue Angel Cafe and Rainbow Mountain.

Kudos: Winter Wine Walk BAHM!

Despite the power outages and high winds in the South Shore, the Marriott Grand Residence Club was warm and cozy (with power!) on Thursday night, which made it the perfect first stop for TahoeChamber’s annual Winter Wine Walk Business After Hours Mixer (BAHM!). Nearly 100 guests began their tours at the Marriott Grand Residence Club with a taste from Crystal Basin Cellars before embarking on a tour to participating businesses. Each shop welcomed attendees with food, drinks and raffle prizes. It was a fun, blustery night that included great food, wine and friends.

Heavenly Mountain Resort closed on Saturday; Concert still on

Heavenly Mountain Resort in South Lake Tahoe will be closed on Saturday, December 13. The ski area is still experiencing problems from Thursday's high winds and power outages.

A tree fell on Dipper Express overnight and the mountain had still been experiencing power outages during the day on Friday.

South Lake Tahoe's Sho Kashima named to 2015 US Freestyle Moguls Team

Sho Kashima of South Lake Tahoe has spent the off-season recovering from injuries and is preparing for the 2015 US Freestyle Moguls team.

The team was named this week in advance of the Dec. 13 FIS Freestyle World Cup season opener in Ruka, Finland. Kashima, who skis for Heavenly, expects to be able to join the team mid-season. According to his Facebook and Instagram pages he is working hard on rehabilitation.

Lake Tahoe ski resorts report over 1' of snow from recent storms

Rain drenched the South Shore of Lake Tahoe this week, but the storms that brought rain to lake level brought much needed snow to the upper elevations.

Heavenly Mountain Resort is reporting 14" of fresh snow in the last week with 3" last night.

Kirkwwod reports 5" of snow Wednesday night and 15" in the last seven days.

Sierra at Tahoe had 6" of snow in the last 24 hours with 18" falling during the latest storm.

Northstar had much more snow than the resorts to the South. They had 6" overnight with 31" of snow falling over last week.

Winter Wine Walk BAHM! returns to Heavenly Village

The South Lake Tahoe Fire Department continues the holiday tradition of driving through City neighborhoods and passing out candy canes to our community youth. The decorated engine will Fire Station 2 at 5 p.m. nightly beginning December 10 and going through Christmas Eve.
