We survived the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend and resorts that remain open this week and for the season continue to make snow and spin lifts. Kirkwood has scheduled Chair #6 – Cornice Express to offer top to bottom skiing & riding. Mammoth Mtn. & Mt Rose also open top to bottom. More snow predicted to come through with a Winter Storm Watch starting Wednesday.
Today’s Weather: Expect Partly Cloudy Skies. Highs: 46F-51F (-10F@8000 ft.). Light Winds.

Good morning Lake Tahoe skiers and riders. It's a beautiful Sunday FUnday for ending your Thanksgiving weekend! Kirkwood has three lifts and 15 trails open; Mammoth is open top to bottom with 12 lifts and 37 trails open; Squaw has Gold Coast open on the upper mountain; Mt. Rose is open top to bottom. Have fun and be safe! If you are departing the Lake Tahoe Basin, buckle up, drive safely and have patience with traffic.
Guided walks of historic Genoa at Mormon Station State Historic Park

Mormon Station will be offering guided walks of Genoa on four select Saturdays this fall. Join a park ranger for an approximately one-mile trek throughout a portion of the historic district. During the walk, we will discuss the significance of the structures located along the route, as well as the previous owners of the properties and their contributions to the history of Carson Valley.
Motorhome leads law enforcement on chase from South Lake Tahoe to Gardnerville
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/27/2018 - 4:30pmA motorhome being driven recklessly through South Lake Tahoe and Stateline led law enforcement on a high-speed ride along Highway 50, over Spooner Summit and into the Carson Valley before it crashed into a building in Gardnerville, Nev.
At 10:30 p.m. Sunday, August 26, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) was alerted about the 1997 Airstream motorhome speeding through South Lake Tahoe, running red lights and traveling without headlamps on. They saw it as it crossed into Nevada traveling 55 mph in a 35-mph zone when an enforcement stop was initiated.

Washoe Lake Dam on a breach watch; flood precautions in place
Submitted by paula on Mon, 06/18/2018 - 7:26pmAfter a routine inspection of the Washoe Lake Dam Monday it was determined that the dam was in danger of potentially breaching. Experts arrived on site and conducted an analysis mitigation for the last several hours. Due to this examination, the Washoe Lake Dam threat has been downgraded from imminent threat to a watch.
If the dam breached, the Steamboat Creek and Steamboat Ditch areas would be flooded. Due to this threat, residents were asked in these and surrounding areas, to be prepared to evacuate when notified.

Chain controls remain up and snow continues to come down
Submitted by paula on Thu, 02/22/2018 - 9:36pmThe snow has been falling all down in the Sierra, giving residents and visitors a glimpse into a winter that hasn't been even a slight resemblance into the big winter of 2017.
At this point, every seems to be happy with what fell Thursday. Snow totals aren't in from the ski resorts yet since they release them in the morning, but they most likely will be several inches and hovering near the one foot level.
Two Douglas County businesses cited for selling liquor to minors
Submitted by paula on Thu, 02/08/2018 - 4:15pmThe Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) went to 27 local businesses on February 1 to conduct an operation to make sure they were being compliant with state law with reference to alcohol sales to minors.
The following 25 businesses were checked and they successfully passed the alcohol compliance check and did not sell alcohol to a minor.
Armed robbery at Douglas County Subway

A Caucasian male in his 20’s wearing a black mask, light colored jacket; dark pants and black tennis shoes entered the business on 1-6-18 at 6:15 p.m. and brandished a weapon.
Retired South Lake Tahoe K9 Duke passes
Submitted by paula on Sun, 12/17/2017 - 8:48pmRetired South Lake Tahoe K9 Duke has passed away according to the South Lake Tahoe Police Canine Association. During his years of service he was responsible for the seizure of almost half a million dollars cash and countless narcotics detection arrests. He had numerous street suspect apprehensions, none of which were ever challenged in criminal or civil court according to his handler, Tony Broadfoot.
Duke had been trained by the Dutch Police in Belgium prior to coming to South Lake Tahoe in December of 2005.

The final radio show of the year for the Douglas County Sheriff's Office will coincide with a K-9 fundraiser on Friday, October 6 with Jon Sanchez on KOH780AM.
Five of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office K-9s will be on hand during the live show and event from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sanchez Ranch Meats located at 1734 Hwy 395 in Minden, Nev.
The DCSO K-9 unit is made up of Shadow, Drago, Bak, Bane and Beny.
Fatal crash in Douglas County closes Hwy 395 in both directions
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/17/2017 - 9:10pmHighway 395 near Industrial in Douglas County is currently closed after a fatal crash near the Meadowdale Center.
Traffic in the area is being diverted so expect delays.
The collision occurred about 9:30 p.m. Sunday. No other information is available at this time.
Slinkard Fire near Topaz Lake burns 9,061 acres and remains 20% contained

UPDATE 9/2 2:45PM - The Slinkard Fire is burning in three counties and two states: Mono, Alpine and Douglas County in California and Nevada. It has consumed 7,881 acres since starting by lightning on August 29. Firefighters now have a containment line around 20 percent of the fire. It is located in Slinkard Valley, and on the west slope of Antelope Valley, west of Topaz Lake and eight miles north of Walker, Calif.
Slinkard Fire road closure update: Highways 395 and 208 affected

The Nevada Highway Patrol and California Hwy Patrol are working traffic control for the Slinkard Fire in Topaz near the Nevada and California state line.
North of the fire, Hwy 395 is closed in both directions at Leviathan Mine Road, which is south of Gardnerville, Nevada.
South of the fire, Hwy 395 is closed in both directions at Hwy 182 in Bridgeport, Calif.
Fire near town of Topaz closes highways, evacuations in place
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/30/2017 - 3:13pmUPDATE 8/31 10:00AM - The Slinkard Fire has grown to 5,000 acres with 0 percent containment this morning. The fire has burned to Hwy 395 and crossed Hwy 89 to the north.
Last night, fire crews focused on the eastern flank of the fire along Hwy 395 and engine crews were dedicated to structure protection in northern Topaz. There are no injuries and no structures lost at this time. Power is out in the immediate area.
Douglas County narrows search down to two for Asst. County Manager position
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/14/2017 - 9:58pmThe search for a new Assistant County Manager for Douglas County is almost over as Bradley Hurley and Philip Ritger have been chosen as the final two candidates. The public is invited to meet the two on August 21 from 5:00 p.m to 7:00 p.m. at the Carson Valley Inn.
Last Monday, panel interviews were conducted for eight applicants, and from that group Hurley and Ritger were chosen to be interviewed by County Manager Larry Werner.
Ritger is the current Town of Genoa Manager and Hurley the Deputy Communications Officer with the Department of Defense. Both are residents of Douglas County.
Two new fires in Northern Nevada in Washoe Valley and Cold Springs

Multiple resources aggressively attacked both fires Friday, preventing them from moving through the dry hillsides.
As of tonight, Truckee Meadows Fire Department is reporting 1500-2000 acres have burned in the Cold Springs Fire.
The Brenda Fire east of Washoe Lake has burned an estimated 1200 acres and it is 10 percent contained.

Hwy 395 to be closed Monday for roof installation
Submitted by paula on Fri, 05/12/2017 - 2:02pmHighway 395 in Minden may be closed for up to two hours on Monday, May 15 to allow for the installation of the roof over the old mill silos.
From 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., as a precautionary move, traffic is expected to be diverted as Miles Construction uses a crane to install the structure. Traffic will be diverted onto an alternative route so expect a slow down in the area.
Buckeye Road will also be affected and will be closed at Heybourne Road and traffic will be diverted starting at 9:00 a.m. into the Winhaven development.

Thousands of communities across the United States will participate in the Drug Enforcement Administration “National Drug Take Back” day scheduled for Saturday, April 29 in South Lake Tahoe, Zephyr Cove, and spots in the Carson Valley.
46,000 people a year die from drug overdoses and more than half of those die from prescription opioid overdoses. Four out of five new users of heroin began with abusing prescription opioids.

Escaped Carson City inmate found after crashing stolen water truck
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/29/2017 - 5:16pmAn inmate who walked away from work detail at the Stewart Conservation Camp in Carson City on Tuesday has been arrested after crashing a City water truck that he allegedly stole.
Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) was contacted on Wednesday, March 29 about the attempted theft of a vehicle in northern Douglas County. The reporting party was working on the roof of the Sprint Store on Hwy 395 when he saw the attempt. The suspect was chased away by witnesses, running north towards Fuji Park in Carson City.
