The League to Save Lake Tahoe will be coordinating a cleanup at Kings Beach State Recreation Area from 9 a.m. to noon. The League welcomes volunteers of all ages and abilities. Other Tahoe-area organizations will also be coordinating cleanups along the lake's shoreline and its tributaries

A South Shore tradition, the Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe presents Lake Tahoe Basin FireFest 2012 is set for Saturday Sept. 29, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lake Tahoe Airport.
This family event features demonstrations, firefighter competitions, home safety and energy conservation tips, games, prizes and more.

Wild is the new theme in advertising for Lake Tahoe license plates, as U.S. National Stand Up Paddleboard Team member Jay Wild of Truckee is featured in television and print ads shot last week at Carnelian Bay.

“Over 96 percent of fees help support projects like the Lake Tahoe Water Trail and access to beaches like this,” says Wild, standing on the beach at Watermans Landing. “I train on the lake every day. Tahoe is a treasure, and I have a Tahoe plate to show my love for this magical place.”

With the comment period ending Thursday, August 30, the newly formed Sierra Pro-Access Group is asking outdoor enthusiasts to write against a U.S. Forest Service alternative plan that proposes creating new wilderness areas that would shut down some of the locals' most beloved recreation areas on public land around the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The Tahoe Prosperity Center has announced the appointment of Mone´K. Haen to the new position of CEO. Revenues have been sizzling all summer for businesses that give residents and visitors to Greater Reno-Tahoe an escape from sweltering 100-degree heat.
Andrew Laughlin, owner of Sand Harbor Rentals, says revenues are up about 15 percent on a daily basis from 2011 for rentals of kayaks, personal watercraft and stand-up paddleboards at one of Lake Tahoe’s most popular beaches. Severe debt and federal budget cuts will put increasing pressure on the private sector to take responsibility for environmental restoration projects in the Lake Tahoe Basin, according to the congressional delegates and state leaders who met on Monday for the 16th annual Lake Tahoe Summit.

The Tahoe Fund is encouraging supporters of Lake Tahoe to break out their croquet whites for a good cause. The environmental non-profit is preparing for its 2nd Annual Founders Circle Summer Dinner, to be held at Edgewood Tahoe’s historic Friday’s Station on Sunday, August 12th. Billed as a night to celebrate the organization’s early funders and the Lake, the event will include “Tahoe Croquet” and a gourmet dinner on the lawn. Senators Feinstein, Heller and Governor Brown have all confirmed their attendance.

Training for a Lake Tahoe Master Gardener program will begin this September in South Lake Tahoe.
The program is a partnership between the University of California Cooperative Extension Central Sierra and the Tahoe Resource Conservation District.
Participants who complete the 50-hour training course will be certified Lake Tahoe Master Gardeners who then can provide the community with research-based information about home horticulture and gardening.

UPDATE 10:55AM: The Springs fire in the Pine Nut mountains east of Gardnerville in Douglas County held to 1,000 acres overnight and is five percent contained, according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center. Scattered thunderstorms are in the forecast today.

10:13PM: Smoke moved into the Lake Tahoe Basin on Sunday night as a result of Sunday afternoon fires sparked by lightning in Douglas County which have reportedly burned about 1,000 acres in the Pine Nut mountains east of Gardnerville. Fire crews are still working the scene, which was said to be growing at a moderate rate. Thunderstorms rattled much of western Nevada Sunday afternoon. Some scattered showers could happen in the Lake Tahoe Basin tonight, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. A Red Flag warning for high winds is in effect for the mountains east of the Lake Tahoe Basin until 5 a.m. Monday morning.

The remnants of post-tropical system Fabio will spread across the Sierra and western Nevada Thursday afternoon, bringing the possibility of isolated showers and thunderstorms to the Lake Tahoe region through the evening, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. A Lake Wind Advisory is in effect from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday with gusts possible of 35 mph.

The Forest Service fire chief for the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is suspending residential burning, also known as "dooryard" burning, effective today, Wednesday, July 18, 2012, through the remainder of fire season.
The ban applies to debris burning on private, state and federal lands of El Dorado and Placer counties in the Lake Tahoe Basin, according to a news release.
Residential debris burning is already banned within the South Lake Tahoe city limits, and in both the Tahoe Douglas and North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection districts.

Public input on the proposed replacement of the pier at Zephyr Cove Resort at Lake Tahoe is being sought by the U.S. Forest Service. The decades old pier is in need of replacement to provide a health and safety code compliant structure and to meet current building codes.

Lake Tahoe Basin residents and visitors are invited to help remove one of Tahoe’s most prolific aquatic invasive weeds, Eurasian watermilfoil, during a community volunteer event at Baldwin Beach on Sunday, July 15.
The project is a partnership of the League to Save Lake Tahoe, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, and the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. Preventing the introduction and spread of aquatic invasive species is a top priority for all three agencies.

A large area of high pressure will expand westward bringing high temperatures 8 to 12 degrees above normal this week, with mid 70s to low 90s over the Lake Tahoe Basin and Sierra, with mid 90s to 108 degrees in Western Nevada valleys below 5,000 feet.
While hardly the broiling heat wave experienced last week in the northeast, the change will be noticeable, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Fire restrictions will go into effect in the Lake Tahoe Basin on Monday July 9. A Forest Order has been issued to provide for public safety through the end of the official 2012 fire season. (see PDF below.)
Campfires, including charcoal barbecues, are prohibited except in exempted recreation sites. Smoking on National Forest land is prohibited, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, or within an exempted recreation site. Fire restrictions are intended to reduce the possibility of human-caused wildfires over the summer season.

Public land managers will continue a project to eradicate, control, and contain known and future infestations of “invasive weeds” using chemical treatment. Work will begin Monday, July 9 through Thursday, July 12, 2012, according to the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.
