Public meeting on planning of 56-Acre Master Plan

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The public is invited to participate in another 56-Acre Master Plan virtual session on January 20, 2021 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Planning is underway to create a signature park and area in the heart of South Lake Tahoe that will fill a large wish list of projects.

There are many ways the community can participate including taking the self-guided tour onsite, the online survey, and joining the public online meeting.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Former mayors Brooke Laine and Jason Collin said their good-byes Monday at their final City of South Lake Tahoe council meeting. Collin decided to not run after his four-year term as did Laine who finished ten years on the council.

Some fire and use restrictions continue in the Lake Tahoe Basin

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - A fire ban continues in the Lake Tahoe Basin. On non-red flag days, home use of BBQs with propane or gas are allowed. All charcoal and wood fires are banned at this time. With all of the recent closures of forests due to fire danger, here is an update of what is open around Lake Tahoe:

National Forest trails, trailheads, beaches in Tahoe Basin are open for day-use only.

All camping, overnighting is temporarily prohibited, including camping in Desolation Wilderness, Meiss Country, Pacific Crest, and Tahoe Rim trails.

USFS campgrounds remain closed.

Peaceful rally planned for South Lake Tahoe Sunday

The I Run With Maud-South Lake Tahoe group is holding a rally at Lakeview Commons on Sunday, September 27 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. to celebrate free speech, inclusion and diversity.

Organizers said they'd like to see many of our neighbors represented at this fun, safe, family-friendly, peaceful event. They expect to have a variety of local speakers and an event that is "inspiring, uplifting and overwhelmingly positive for the South Lake Tahoe community.

Volunteers to help are also needed.

South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting Tuesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - City Council will be holding their next meeting on Tuesday September 22 at 9:00 a.m.

The agenda is a fairly short one with the last two regular council meetings lasting about eight hours each.

There will be a closed session meeting at 8:30 a.m.

Council will consider postponing or canceling all City permitted special events until November 17, 2020 or until public health officials deem it is safe to gather in larger groups. All permitted special events have been canceled since May 12, 2020, due to the pandemic.

Peaceful protest/neighborhood rally planned for South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The local grass roots activist organization, IRunWithMaud - South Lake Tahoe, is holding a peaceful protest/neighborhood rally at Lakeview Commons on Sunday, September 27 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The rally is to celebrate free speech and will include local speakers. The South Lake Tahoe City Council recently read a proclamation that all of South Lake Tahoe including Lakeview Commons are "free speech" areas to be used for traditional public forums allowed under the First Amendment.

Promotions for the South Lake Tahoe Police Department

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - New South Lake Tahoe Police Chief David Stevenson was sworn in during a ceremony on Monday, receiving his official badge from his wife Jennifer in front of his mother and sister. The virtual ceremony had just a few attendees due to COVID-19 restrictions, but many were able to log onto their phones and computers and watch the 25-year veteran of the force, and South Tahoe High graduate, move into the top spot in the police department.

Black Lives Matter peaceful protest planned for South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The local Black Lives Matter (BLM) group will be holding another peaceful protest at Lakeview Commons on Wednesday, July 29 starting at 5:00 p.m.

Organizer Kevin Brunner has invited both the City of South Lake Tahoe City Manager Joe Irvin and new Police Chief David Stevenson to participate in the event. According to the City's Communications Manager Chris Fiore both plan to be there.

Brunner said the family-friendly, peaceful event will also include updates on a BLM art project. He asks that everyone attending to please wear a mask.

South Lake Tahoe rally held to support local law enforcement

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Almost 200 people showed up Saturday to display their support of South Lake Tahoe law enforcement during a rally on a national day to "Bridge the Blue."

The supporters gathered at the entrance to the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) and South Lake Tahoe Police buildings before many of them joined a walk down Johnson Boulevard to US50 over to Lakeview Commons and down Al Tahoe, then back to the beginning.

Live at Lakeview concert series postponed until 2021

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After Tuesday's announcement that all events on City of South Lake Tahoe property are canceled for 60 days, On Course Events has had to cancel their popular Live at Lakeview Summer Music Series.

Originally scheduled to begin on June 25, 2020, the music series is now on hold until the summer of 2021.

Conservancy awards City of South Lake Tahoe $425K to plan downtown 56-acre project

Peaceful candlelight vigil held in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There have been public gatherings across the country in response to the death of George Floyd on May 25 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, some peaceful, some turning into riots.

On Saturday, May 30, a peaceful candlelight vigil was held at Lakeview Commons in South Lake Tahoe to highlight "Black Lives Matter" and to raise awareness of racial injustice.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A candlelight vigil in honor of George Floyd is planned for Saturday, May 30 at Lakeview Commons in South Lake Tahoe from 8:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.

Organizers, the I Run With Maud group of South Lake Tahoe, are asking those who plan on attending to wear a mask and stay 6-12 feet away from each other. Signs are also encouraged: #BlackLivesMatter #iRunWithMaud #JusticeForGeorgeFloyd #iCantBreathe.

Floyd died after a Minneapolis police officer put his knee to Floyd's neck for almost nine minutes on May 25.

City of South Lake Tahoe facilities to start reopening

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe will be opening their boat ramp at El Dorado Beach on Friday, May 29. Only boats with valid Tahoe, Echo Lake or Fallen Leaf Lake seals and a 2020 Tahoe sticker will be able to launch. "Tahoe Only" stickers are available for purchase at this launch site. They will be open Friday through Sunday only at this time from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Only one boat will be able to occupy the dock at a time. The boat ramp will be not be accepting cash and wireless payment technology will be utilized.

Live at Lakeview still hopes to have some concerts this summer in South Lake Tahoe

All special events on City property through at least July 14 have been postponed, which includes the Live at Lakeview Summer Music Series.

Originally scheduled to begin on June 25, 2020, the upcoming season of Live at Lakeview is unknown.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Events on City property through at least July 14 have been postponed, including the 4th of July Parade.

As South Lake Tahoe starts to reopen with guidelines from California Governor Newsom for Phase 2, the directives toward events won't be addressed until future phases so the City took action during their meeting Tuesday.

South Lake Tahoe parks to remain closed during pandemic

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Parks run by the City of South Lake Tahoe that were closed for the season will remain closed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We aren’t discouraging public access to the parks, we want our residents to get outside during this crisis,” said Public Works Director Ray Jarvis. “We are going to keep the parks closed to vehicle access though to discourage large gatherings and to continue to encourage people to follow state and federal guidelines.”

New agreement in the works for 56-acre South Lake Tahoe downtown project

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The long-discussed 56-acre parcel in the middle of South Lake Tahoe is finally seeing movement again, and both the South Lake Tahoe City Council and El Dorado County Board of Supervisors (BOS) supporting further conversation. A formal agreement between the two is expected later in 2020 with another one-two years of public meetings, consultant review, and planning before plans are implemented. The California Tahoe Conservancy is funding the cost of the consultant, just as they did 30 years ago.

South Lake Tahoe to create an ordinance for electric scooters

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - First it was Lime Bikes, but now the company's Lime Scooters have created both enjoyment and concern in South Lake Tahoe. The popular mode of transportation is used by millions worldwide and provides over 100,000 annual rides in South Lake Tahoe.

But the illegal use by minors and a flaw in the Lime app process has drawn concern from local law enforcement and residents.

California Tahoe Conservancy moves forward with Conolley Beach project

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) has been working on improving public access at Conolley Beach in South Lake Tahoe for many years, along with other spots along the lake. During their October meeting, the CTC Board voted to spend up to $420,000 on the "Conolley Beach Public Access Project" for the execution of easements and other agreements to build stairs to the beach, construct a trail, add seating areas and stabilize the slope with boulders.

Viking Corner: This Week at South Tahoe High

This week at South Tahoe High School, students found their voice about climate change and the varsity volleyball team travels to archrival Truckee in a battle for the league’s top spot.

Climate Change Strike

Last Friday, hundreds of students at STHS walked out of their classes in protest against climate change inaction. Some even marched down towards the Lakeview Commons and spoke in front of locals. Inspired by the strike, other students are coming together to find more effective ways of protest.

200 people, young to old, joined Global Climate Strike in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As the Global Climate Strike was taking place around the world will millions of people participating, approximately 200 people in South Lake Tahoe held their own on the shores of Lake Tahoe at Lakeview Commons.

Several speakers addressed the crowd, one bigger than organizers imagined.

"This is a fantastic turnout," said organizer Stephen Wright of South Lake Tahoe. "Kids even left school."

Wright was referring to a group of students who walked from South Tahoe High to Lakeview Commons (a 4-mile trek) to join in.

Small South Lake Tahoe fire spotted from Nevada Beach

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A person sitting on Nevada Beach Thursday morning saw a stream of smoke coming from the California side of the lake and called the fire department just before 10:00 a.m. The caller thought there was fire along the beach in South Lake Tahoe so a search began for the source. Other calls went into dispatch and the fire turned out to be on a strip of land near Spruce Avenue between Peninsula and Heather Lake Roads.

The fire was put out within five minutes of the arrival of South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR). An area of 20' x 20' was burned.

The free Live at Lakeview Summer Music Series brings a wide variety of genre all season from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. every Thursday until Labor Day Weekend.

Some South Lake Tahoe beaches to temporarily close due to high water levels

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) will limit public access and temporarily close portions of some south shore beaches starting Friday, June 28, 2019. They announced beaches they own near Lakeview Commons and the Upper Truckee Marsh will close for public safety and to protect sensitive wildlife habitat and areas prone to erosion.

Conservancy approves $500K to spend on Alta Mira project in South Lake Tahoe

Lime scooter launch party in South Lake Tahoe Friday

Lime scooters are returning to South Lake Tahoe as soon as weather permits, but in preparation of that day they are holding a Lime Launch Day on Friday, May 17 from 1:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Lakeview Commons.

At the launch party, Lime staff members will be on hand to meet the community and introduce them to the Lime app. They will also be giving out helmets and promoting safety, as well as letting the public know the routes through South Lake Tahoe where the popular mode of transportation is permitted.

The party is being held, rain or shine (or snow).

Celebrate Earth Day in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A full day of earth-friendly events and activities returns to South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, April 27 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Bijou Community Park, located at 1201 Al Tahoe Boulevard.

Earth Day recognizes, celebrates and promotes our region’s unique beauty while educating people about its environmental issues. South Lake Tahoe’s free event includes children’s activities, local vendors, environmental booths, nature walks with Tahoe Institute for Natural Science, and live “river rock and mountain blues” by Boot Juice.

Lime scooters return to South Lake Tahoe with contract, new fees

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lime is returning to South Lake Tahoe this summer, but with some changes both visibly and financially during a new one-year trial period for 2019.

After much discussion on Tuesday night, the City Council unanimously approved a new contract with Lime that will bring up to 550 scooters to town this season, but, as reported before, the bikes are not returning.

The Council wanted to make sure not all 550 will appear on opening day at the beginning of May and will work with Lime to start slow.

Earth Day Climate March in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The community is invited to join in on the Earth Day Climate March on Saturday, April 27 starting at 9:30 a.m. They will be starting at Lakeview Commons and at 10:00 a.m. they will be marching over to the South Lake Tahoe Earth Day celebration at Bijou Community Park.

Lake Tahoe Water Trail - "72 miles of pure liquid fun"

Hiking trails have maps, roads have maps, bike trails have maps, and water trails have maps.

The Lake Tahoe Water Trail has been in place since 2003 and is a designated water route along the 72-mile shoreline that connects public launch/landing sites to help paddlers have a safe, responsible, and fun recreation experience while practicing good stewardship that protects the watershed.

The connect users to the trail, a newly designed website has been launched with paddle routes listed that match abilities and interests, navigation tools, and water safety tips.
