Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/12/2021 - 10:00pmTeresa Diane Golden, known as Teri, passed away peacefully in her home on December 29, 2020. She was 76. Teri loved living in South Lake Tahoe. She was active in the Democratic Party, Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless, Christmas Cheer, the Drugstore Project, helping hikers on the Pacific Rim Trail, the AARP tax preparation, and many other endeavors. Teri was also a member of the Community Presbyterian Church and The Women of the Moose. Her neighbors described her as a loving and generous person.
Longtime local Larry Lukins ~ 1944 - 2020
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/24/2020 - 11:44amLarry Lukins passed away on November 25, 2020. He was born February 22, 1944 to Melvin and Hazel Lukins of South Lake Tahoe. Larry was the third generation of Lukins’ raised in South Lake Tahoe.
Larry was always proud of growing up in “old Tahoe” and loved to share stories of the good ole days. As a child growing up in South Lake Tahoe, Larry and his brother Danny spent much of their time working on and building airplanes, cars and boats.
South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge donates $1000 to Family Resource Center
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/30/2020 - 3:59pmOver the past ten years, the South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge has donated 50 Christmas food boxes annually to local families, delivering the boxes in recent years to the South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center for distribution to families in need.
These boxes contained a complete Christmas Ham dinner for a family of four, plus enough extra food to last for several additional meals. But, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this year the Lodge was unable to hold its normal fundraisers and food collections to put the boxes together.
53 South Lake Tahoe area nonprofits recipients of American Century Championship donation
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/08/2020 - 5:10pmLocal nonprofits in the South Lake Tahoe area were presented with a record $250,000 in donations from the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and American Century Championship as a result of money raised during the 2020 celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe.
Just as the popular golf event was unique and held without fans due to COVID-19 this year, it was a different type of ceremony handing out the money and the presentation of checks held virtually. Representatives from 53 nonprofits awarded the money were on the Thursday Zoom call.
Popular South Lake Tahoe fishing derby canceled for 2020
Submitted by paula on Fri, 08/14/2020 - 8:25amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The 18th annual South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge Kids’ Fishing Derby has been canceled due to the pandemic. The Lodge has sponsored the tournament at Lake Baron inside Tahoe Paradise Park for 17 years and said they feel it important to follow state and county guidelines to avoid group gatherings and the safety and protection of children is paramount.
The Lodge had been planning on having the Optimists Club as co-sponsors this September after the Optimists had to cancel their fishing derby at Sawmill Pond earlier this summer.

The Moose Lodge sponsored their annual Adopt A Day (AAD) of Nourishment by donating $300 to cover the costs of the food and associated expenses necessary to provide the hot, full-course meal served at the dinner.

A wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter and friend, she will be dearly missed by those that knew and loved her. She was a compassionate person, kind to everyone, not one to talk about others and always there for you in a time of need. She was born on June 19, 1942 at home in Whitt, Texas, the youngest of 6 children and 12 years younger than the next oldest sibling.
South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge Kids’ Fishing Derby a success

This was the 17th year the Moose Lodge has hosted this free event for children in the Lake Tahoe area.
Registration began at 8:00 am and wrapped up at 2:00 p.m. Hot dogs, chips, sodas, and water were provided free to all registered children.

Sponsored by the Moose Lodge of South Lake Tahoe for 14 years, the Longest Day of Golf raised $14,000 to go to help local cancer patients.
On Friday a check was presented by tournament organizer Mary Luckel to the Cancer League during a barbeque at the Moose Lodge. The men and women of the Moose Lodge, the golf course and many local businesses helped the league during their Longest Day of Golf.

She attended Immaculate Heart High School in Hollywood and graduated from South Lake Tahoe High School. She studied at El Camino College and Lake Tahoe Community College.
Allison was an accomplished sailor spending almost every weekend during her early high school years sailing to Catalina Island.
Fundraising efforts underway for local woman in a San Francisco hospital

Sepsis and life-threatening infections caused Allison to be airlifted from Barton Hospital to San Francisco two weeks ago.

On Tuesday, members of the lodge delivered 50 decorated boxes to the Family Resource Center, each packed full of a ham, vegetables, canned goods, pasta, potatoes, bread, tortillas and everything else needed to feed a family a big holiday meal, and then more for leftovers.
American Century and LTVA award almost $79k to South Shore nonprofits

South Lake Tahoe fishing derby won with a 6.3 pound trout
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/17/2018 - 7:53pmThe 6th annual Kids' Fishing Derby hosted by the South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge was a big success, with 210 children participating at the event held at Tahoe Paradise Park on Sunday.
At least ten kids caught fish three pounds or higher.
The winners:
First - Hailey Turk, 5-years-old with a 6.3 lb. fish
Tie for Second - Harper Serrano, age 3, and Porter Neira, age 2, each with a 5.9 lb. fish
They won savings bond from El Dorado Savings, with the winner winning a $100 savings bond. 175 participating youth also won raffle prizes. They were all treated to a hot dog lunch as well.
Volunteers pick up 796 lbs of litter from Lake Tahoe area beaches and rivers

Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. near the main entrance of the lake inside Tahoe Paradise Park. Hot dogs, chips, sodas and water are provided free to all registered
children. The event wraps up at 2:00 p.m.
For the event, the Lodge will be planting the Lake with hundreds of pounds of catchable trout ranging from one to five pounds.
Fishing poles, tackle, and bait are provided or kids can bring their own.

The Moose Lodge of South Lake Tahoe has sponsored the Longest Day of Golf for thirteen years. Lodge members spend the day driving golf carts, keeping the water and food flowing for the golfers, and helping to raise funds for charity.
13th annual Longest Day of Golf to raise funds for SLT Cancer League

Participants spend hours on the course, from sun-up to sun-down, or however long they can last, earning money for every hole they golf. During the 2017 event they raised $10,000 and this year's goal is to have golfers play over 135 holes and raise $12,000 to help the SLT Cancer League help locals with the disease.

Help spruce up South Lake Tahoe neighborhoods and "Keep Tahoe Clean" on Saturday, May 12 during the 3rd annual Spring Cleanup day. Last year, 118 volunteers spent a morning picking up nearly 1,500 pounds of trash.
The Clean Tahoe Program and City of South Lake Tahoe are organizing the day, so get together with your friends, family and neighbors to remove litter from our community. Check-in at the cleanup locations will begin at 9:00 a.m. and volunteers will be assigned a stretch of road to clean. Afterwards, everyone will meet up at Bijou Park for a FREE lunch and celebration.

For nearly four decades, the volunteers of this organization have driven patients from South Lake Tahoe to their medical treatment, at no charge to the patients or their families. The drivers take patients to Reno, Carson City, Minden, Truckee, and as far away as UC Davis. The Cancer League also gives limited monetary assistance in the form of small grants to the patients to help with their monthly expenses.

A fundraiser will be held in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, September 9 for long-time local Bill Horning. The South Tahoe High graduate has had some recent major medical issues but is on the road to recovery.
Horning has spent the last 35 years playing Santa Claus for the community at events such as the Barton Foundation Festival of Trees. He not only worked at the High Sierra and MontBleu, and most recently the Marriott, but has also been a coordinator with Bread and Broth and Second Serving.
Longest Day of Golf nets SLT Cancer League over $9,400
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/24/2017 - 10:43pmEach year the Moose Lodge of South Lake Tahoe (Loyal Order of Moose #1632) hosts the Longest Day of Golf at Tahoe Paradise Golf Course to raise funds for the South Lake Tahoe Cancer League and today they celebrated their effors, $9,462. Since 2006, golfers in the day long event have raised $125,328.82 for the non-profit to use towards transportation and grants for local cancer patients.

What began as a small project with members filling up 15 boxes of food has grown into a much larger project with 50 families receiving the meals this holiday season.
Moose Lodge 1632 is asking for help from the community to fill these boxes. They are seeking donations of food to supplement the food boxes being prepared for distribution to needy families in the South Lake Tahoe area.

"Each of us are here today because of a veteran, those who fought to preserve our freedom," said American Legion Post Chaplain Curt Emrie as he opened the ceremony. "Pray for those who paid the ultimate price and always keep veterans near and dear to our hearts."
SLT Moose Lodge announces annual fishing derby winners
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/22/2016 - 7:02pmAlmost 200 children participated in the 15th annual South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge Kids' Fishing Derby on Sunday at Lake Baron.
Travis Bank reeled in a 3.5 pound trout to win the derby, and took home a $100 Savings Certificate from El Dorado Savings. 2nd place winner Chance Rice won second place and a $50 Savings Certificate with his 3.2 lb trout. Third place winner Dillon Switzer also won a $50 Savings Certificate for his 2.5 lb catch.
Over 140 raffle prizes given out to the children.
Lake Baron closed to public as it's stocked with 1,000 pounds of fish for annual derby

They will be stocking the lake with almost 1,000 pounds of catchable and trophy sized trout.
The annual event, for kids up to the age of 16, is provided free of charge by the Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge on Sunday, September 18 from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Free food and prizes for kids as well as a chance to take home prize money for the largest fish caught.

Memorial Day ceremony at Happy Homestead on Monday

There will be a Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 30 at 11:00 a.m. at the Happy Homestead Cemetery in South Lake Tahoe to remember those who have died in service to our nation. The American Legion Post 795 is hosting the ceremony and has invited the public to attend both the remembrance and for refreshments at their hall afterwards.
Close to 600 flags will be placed at Happy Homestead Cemetery by the South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge on Friday morning, and they'll remain throughout the holiday weekend. The cemetery is the final resting place to more than 560 veterans.

WOTM help out with the kids who are part of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District's McKinney Vento program. LTUSD receives an annual allocation of about $1,000 to purchase school supplies and help with bus transportation for its approximately 250 homeless students.
South Lake Tahoe community takes care of each other during holidays
Submitted by paula on Sat, 12/19/2015 - 11:29pmThe Christmas spirit has been evident all through the South Shore over the past few weeks as many people and non-profit agencies have been blessed with donations of money, food and gifts to help make the holidays a bit brighter.
Here are some of the many Santas who've been busy at work:
The South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge and Women of the Moose filled up 40 boxes with hams and food for families at Tahoe Valley Elementary school. The students decorated the boxes.

The kids loved the evening and it couldn't have been made possible if you weren't a part of it.
Tommy Moose, symbol of caring, donated to local police and fire departments
Submitted by paula on Sat, 11/14/2015 - 12:52amSouth Lake Tahoe Police and Fire departments, and the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office will be handing out stuffed moose to children they come across in their jobs who are facing times of stress, uncertainty and anxiety.
Members of Women of the Moose, and the Loyal Order of the Moose, Chapter 408 donated a box of Tommy Moose to the departments. Tommy Moose personifies one of the tenants of the Loyal Order of Moose: caring for children.
“The healing begins with helping kids at the scene of a serious event—starting right away makes good sense,” said Police Chief Brian Uhler.
Kudos: South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge hosts Bread & Broth Dinner
Submitted by paula on Mon, 10/26/2015 - 9:09pmBread & Broth would like to thank the South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge #1632 for their Adopt A Day sponsorship of the Monday, October 12th evening dinner. Thanks to the Moose Lodge’s generous donation, the 91 folks who came for dinner were served baked salmon with orange sauce, spaghetti with red sauce, a mixed green salad, a lovely strawberry/cantaloupe salad and a wide assortment of desserts. Although heaping servings were doled out during the first serving at 4:00 p.m., 27 diners returned for the 5:00 p.m. “second” serving of this tasty and nutritious dinner.

A whopper of a fish tops the scales during Kid's Fishing Derby
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/13/2015 - 7:00pm"I'm usually a bass fisherman," explained 11-year-old Casey Holden. "I only fish for trout during this derby."
The sixth grader from Fairfield-Suisun Valley Elementary had the catch of the day on Sunday during the 14th annual Moose Lodge Fishing Derby held at Lake Baron inside Tahoe Paradise Park. The first fish he reeled in was 3 lbs 7 oz after about 90 minutes of fishing. As soon as he got that one off the hook he cast another line and within a minute caught the one that ended up being the biggest of the day, a 7 lb 5 oz rainbow trout.
